That means we have just a week and a half until the end of 1Q \u2014 and 26 days until the start of Ramadan. The Colonel was right: Time accelerates as you get older.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s interest rate day \u2014 and all signs point to a hold:<\/strong> All 12 people <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4e93cbb9-79ef-4b1d-807b-d74d1637b427\">we surveyed<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4e93cbb9-79ef-4b1d-807b-d74d1637b427\">last week<\/a> forecast the central bank would leave rates unchanged when it meets later today, citing the possible impact of heightened commodity prices on domestic inflation, and the potential for rising bond yields in the US to hit our all-important carry trade. In a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN2B81IQ\">Reuters poll<\/a>, 15 analysts expected rates to be left on hold and one penciled in a 50 bps cut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where rates stand currently:<\/strong> The CBE\u2019s overnight deposit rate is at 8.25% and the lending rate is 9.25%, while the main operation and discount rates are at 8.75%. The central bank slashed rates by 400 bps last year, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f2e78eb3-6978-4eb5-a04f-a3b7247293ed\">emergency 300-bps cut in March<\/a> to protect the economy from the fallout from covid-19, and two 50-bps cuts in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/383b8b99-dd6d-46df-b2dd-f2c241ea039f\">September<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5662d281-1e6f-4604-b559-ae1ac16ce3be\">November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IT\u2019S A BIG DAY FOR: The AstraZeneca \/ Oxford jab<\/strong>, with a top European Union regulator set to announce the results of its investigation into blood clots in a vanishing small number of recipients of the jab. Both the head of the European Commission and the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2021\/03\/17\/world\/covid-19-coronavirus#the-who-and-the-head-of-the-european-commission-urge-countries-to-keep-using-astrazeneca-vaccines-arguing-benefits-outweigh-risk\">said late yesterday<\/a> that they trust the AstraZeneca jab. \u201cI trust AstraZeneca, I trust the vaccines,\u201d EC boss Ursula von der Leyen said. In a collective freakout, EU countries including France, Germany, Ireland and more pulled the jab. Canada continues to use it, and Ireland, France and Italy have all signaled they\u2019re ready to quickly resume using the AstraZeneca jab if today\u2019s report allows it.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>*** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> from Wednesday\u2019s edition of EnterprisePM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anyone living in Egypt who is 18 or older <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c3611499-4c07-4b9f-b40b-1fdcadead53e\">can register now to be vaccinated<\/a><\/strong> against covid-19 as registration through the Health Ministry\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/egcovac.mohp.gov.eg\">online portal<\/a> is no longer limited to senior citizens, healthcare workers, and individuals with chronic conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The sale of an 80-90% stake in military-owned Wataniya Petroleum <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5a942317-1102-4ec1-9b16-79861b30fcfd\">has been pushed back to 2H2021<\/a><\/strong> from the first half of the year as was previously expected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EFG Hermes\u2019 2020 grew for the third year in a row <\/strong>as the company\u2019s buy-side, non-bank lending, and capital markets businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17decee9-c013-4562-b86c-ecffa2c535e1\">performed solidly<\/a> throughout the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>YOUR WEEKEND READING assignment: The Biden administration doesn\u2019t seem to like <\/strong><strong>freetrade <\/strong><strong>any more than Agent Orange did<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/17\/business\/economy\/free-trade-biden-tai.html\">the New York Times writes<\/a>. The idea that trade liberalization \u201clike the spread of democracy and market capitalism \u2026 is a universal and worthy goal\u201d is no longer \u201cgospel\u201d in DC, the Gray Lady suggests. Kathering Tai, Biden\u2019s nominee to run the Office of the United States Trade Representative, is \u201cpromising to focus more on ensuring that trade [agreements] that protect the rights and interests of American workers, rather than exporters or consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA #1- The Tax Authority isn\u2019t planning to extend the 31 March deadline for real estate <\/strong><strong>tax filing<\/strong>, director of taxpayer services at the Egyptian Tax Authority Mohsen El Gayar told Yahduth fi Misr\u2019s Sherif Amer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0XyVlii6V3c\">watch, runtime: 2:52<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA #2- But do you know who has given you more time to file your taxes? Your good old Uncle Sam. <\/strong>US citizens and dual nationals will have until 17 May to file their individual tax returns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-day-for-individuals-extended-to-may-17-treasury-irs-extend-filing-and-payment-deadline\">the IRS said in a statement<\/a> out overnight. Fed officials expect to hold rates where they are until at least 2023, despite their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/monetarypolicy\/files\/fomcprojtabl20210317.pdf\">projections (pdf)<\/a> for economic growth and inflation indicating a more positive outlook than a few months ago, thanks to the Biden administration\u2019s USD 1.9 tn stimulus program and the rollout of the vaccination program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fed is now looking to bring inflation \u201cmoderately above 2% for some time\u201d to compensate for the current shortfall<\/strong> and maintain the long-term average rate at 2%. It will only consider raising interest rates once inflation is \u201cwell anchored\u201d at this target, the statement says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-17\/fed-keeps-zero-rate-outlook-sees-inflation-bump-as-short-lived?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/federal-reserve-interest-rates-bond-purchases-march-2021-11615917632?mod=hp_lead_pos2\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> have more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A stock m<\/strong><strong>arket crash? That\u2019s nothing to worry about<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a8e8475a-c808-4552-96fb-7ce5551e338e\">says veteran FT commentator<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a8e8475a-c808-4552-96fb-7ce5551e338e\">Martin Wolf<\/a> in a piece that calls for calm if and when stocks suffer a serious pullback after a record-breaking bull run. With <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1c6fb4fa-12c9-45d0-b904-242cb9d1c66d\">interest rates rising<\/a> in anticipation of a strong economic recovery and heightened inflation, a stock market accustomed to cheap debt may well suffer a correction. Equities do not equal the real economy though, and while a crash will certainly hurt investors, it would only produce a wider economic crisis if badly handled by policymakers, Wolf argues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s all well and good if you\u2019re in the US, but in EM?<\/strong> Emerging markets were concerned about potentially being faced with a situation similar to the 1980s debt crisis due to the aggressive stimulus measures in the US and what they thought might be sooner-than-expected tightening, Wolf writes. The asset class got a taste of that scenario earlier this month, when the bond sell-off in the US ricocheted into emerging markets, producing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4a4f373f-fa8a-4243-a936-08ff7be3fd9c\">the first day of outflows<\/a> in more than five months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investors are certainly worried: <\/strong>Rising inflation and interest rates have overtaken covid-19 as the #1 investment threat, according to a Bank of America survey of investors, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/04f1e02a-a2d8-4c76-beb9-d205c999ec9c\">FT<\/a> reports. Respondents, who collectively manage over USD 579 bn worth of assets, voiced concerns that a strong economic recovery will combine with the historic volumes of fiscal and monetary stimulus to send prices rising uncontrollably higher, and about a possible <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/15dfd0a7-91a0-44c1-8303-adefafb2d22b\">2013-esque spike in interest rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between a rock and a hard place:<\/strong> \u201cThe Fed\u2019s challenge is to manage the transition from a low to a high interest rates regime without causing market mayhem,\u201d said analysts for financial services group ING. That\u2019s likely to be easier said than done though. <strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a catch-22 for the Fed,\u201d<\/strong> said Jim Caron, portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. \u201cThey want to communicate that they are going to be patient but the more patient they are, the more people will worry about inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The treasury sell-off is spreading to corporate bonds:<\/strong> Borrowing costs for US companies are rising as the sell-off in US treasuries seeps into the corporate bond market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9cefffa7-4842-42ed-9b59-fc17276fc2f4\">the FT<\/a> says. The average yield on investment-grade debt rose to 2.28% last week, up 0.17 percentage points in March and 0.5 points in 2021, according to data provider ICE Data Services. The average price of high-rated corporate debt is now at its weakest since 2Q2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The stock market mania may still have a while to run though<\/strong>, as the Biden administration prepares to dole out its USD 1.9 tn stimulus package. Analysts at Vanda Research predict that retail investors will buy almost USD 3 bn worth of stocks when stimulus checks are paid out this week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e67f5076-c517-4bd5-9688-c70cde011452\">the FT<\/a>.
