{"id":560679,"date":"2021-03-09T04:19:17","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T04:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2021\/03\/09\/what-were-tracking-on-9-march-2021\/"},"modified":"2021-03-09T04:19:17","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T04:19:17","slug":"what-were-tracking-on-9-march-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2021\/03\/09\/what-were-tracking-on-9-march-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"What we\u2019re tracking on 9 March 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Good morning, wonderful people, and welcome to hump day. <\/strong>Get through Tuesday and we\u2019ll slide into the weekend together over the next couple of days.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>*** CATCH UP QUICK<\/strong> from yesterday\u2019s edition of EnterprisePM \u2014 it was a big news day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saudi\u2019s Public Investment Fund <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ccb1a651-d6f5-4d96-9a08-7fd1c549c903\">is<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ccb1a651-d6f5-4d96-9a08-7fd1c549c903\">taking<\/a><\/strong><strong> leading offshore outfit Ades International private<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Banque Misr <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/97999dac-0931-46ba-8396-70766c1c9218\">won\u2019t hike<\/a><\/strong><strong> its offer price<\/strong> for CI Capital<\/li>\n<li>Turkey\u2019s FM says <strong>Ankara <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/028ce554-d90c-4af4-81e0-dab48283cdd6\">really wants<\/a><\/strong><strong> to patch things up with Cairo<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>No single story dominates the news cycle this morning after a heavy news day<\/strong> <strong>yesterday<\/strong>, but we as a nation made a big thing out of international women\u2019s day yesterday, starting with coverage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s call for <a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/405594\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egyptian-president-calls-for-hiring-women-on-State.aspx\">more women to be admitted<\/a> to the ranks of the nation\u2019s prosecution service and other arms of the state judicial apparatus. We have more on that in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STATISTIC OF THE DAY- Zero.<\/strong> That\u2019s Egypt\u2019s score on the marriage and pay indicators in the World Bank\u2019s Women, Business, and the Law report, which looks at \u201claws and regulations affecting women\u2019s economic inclusion.\u201d The report points to the lack of legislation ensuring women\u2019s rights to equal pay as well as to work in the same industries and types of jobs as men. Egypt also currently lacks legislation that addresses domestic violence, does not allow women the same rights to divorce as men, and as you might expect, the Personal Status Act comes in for criticism for a multiplicity of failings. You can find the <a href=\"https:\/\/wbl.worldbank.org\/content\/dam\/documents\/wbl\/2021\/snapshots\/Egypt-arab-rep.pdf\">Egypt snapshot here (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the bright side: Egypt has relatively good scores on the workplace and<\/strong><strong> entrepreneurship indicators<\/strong>, as there is currently legislation in place prohibiting workplace [redacted] harassment and discrimination in employment based on gender. Women are also able to access lines of credit and sign contracts as much as men are, which clears the path for entrepreneurship. Egypt also gets a perfect score on the pensions indicator, thanks to men and women getting the same pension benefits and having the same retirement age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We would also tip our hat at the Financial Regulatory Authority<\/strong>, which ordered last year that all publicly traded companies have <strong>at least one woman member of their board of directors<\/strong> by this year. By our math, <strong>barely 50% of companies have so far complied.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Women will now have an easier time opening bank accounts and getting credit cards <\/strong><strong>with CIB <\/strong>under a financial inclusion initiative that will run until the end of March, the bank said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cebnQ8\">a statement<\/a>. Details in the link.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eyeing something with a designer label? You might be able to do good while you get that <\/strong><strong>dopamine fix:<\/strong> Online luxury retailer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.net-a-porter.com\/en-gb\/campaigns\/our-community-iwd\/\">Net-a-Porter<\/a> launched a community-first campaign, #PowerToChange, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NETAPORTER\/status\/1368973542101028868?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\">Women for Women International<\/a>, which focuses on helping women survivors of war rebuild their lives. The campaign introduces a capsule collection of 13 exclusive pieces that vary from custom t-shirts to jewelry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6bcc846c-bc94-4e37-bc12-f9dcfd947bb6\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the standouts: Egyptian homeware startup <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/egypt.malaikalinens.com\/\">Malaika<\/a><\/strong>, which is taking part with a new collection of linens \u2014 handcrafted with Egyptian cotton \u2014 that will see all proceeds donated to <a href=\"https:\/\/threadsofhopetextiles.org\/\">Threads of Hope<\/a> initiative \u2014 a Cairo-based embroidery school dedicated to empowering women out of poverty. <a href=\"http:\/\/theinvisiblecollection.com\">Tap or click here<\/a> to check out the full collection.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THERE\u2019S NO DOMINANT STORY ABROAD<\/strong>, with at least three pieces of news worth knowing about as you start your workday:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The biggest of them: The Nasdaq is in correction territory<\/strong> \u2014 defined as a 10% drop from a recent peak \u2014 as tech stocks fell again yesterday. The Dow advanced 1%, while the S&P shed 0.5%. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stock-markets-dow-update-03-08-2021-11615192681?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> says analysts think \u201cinvestors [believe] that the largest media, communications and online-shopping companies will log a slower pace of growth as pandemic lockdowns end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t panic just yet: <\/strong>Futures at dispatch time suggest Wall Street \u2014 including Nasdaq \u2014 will open in the green later today, as will just about all major European indices. Asian markets are mixed this morning, with the Nikkei and Hang Seng in the green while Shanghai and Korea\u2019s Kospi are both slightly in the red.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-09\/oil-flirting-with-70-challenges-world-s-economic-recovery?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> worries that <strong>USD 70 oil threatens the global economic recovery<\/strong>, even if it gives a boost to our allies in the GCC. And <strong>Apollo Global Management is merging with life ins. outfit Athene Holding<\/strong>, \u201ctransforming the alternative asset manager into a financial conglomerate with a market capitalisation worth almost USD 30 bn,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e9ba5f23-9777-4730-a59b-d0c4d1fb510c\">Financial Times<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA-<\/strong> <strong>Mmm, warm dust. <\/strong>Moderate winds are set to blow dust over much of Egypt, with the sandy conditions due to last until tomorrow morning, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3ekdBA7\">national weather service<\/a>.
