We have more details in this morning\u2019s Covid Watch, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG STORIES INTERNATIONALLY are all coming out of Washington but pertain to<\/strong><strong> the Middle East<\/strong>, including the release of a report that says Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved journalist Jamal Khashoggi\u2019s brutal murder in 2018. Also making headlines is US President Joe Biden\u2019s first airstrike in the region. We have more on both in Around the World, below.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>*** CATCH UP <\/strong><strong>QUICK (and refresh your memory if you woke up with weekend amnesia).<\/strong> The big stories from Thursday\u2019s EnterprisePM:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Capmas has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7eb1b70a-9855-429c-bbdb-4f5761923afd\">everything you wanted to know<\/a><\/strong><strong> about the first and second waves<\/strong> here in Egypt;<\/li>\n<li>The Sovereign Fund of Egypt is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5ff934f4-35e2-41d7-a97e-5a0bd7634b47\">reportedly eyeing<\/a> a <strong>10% stake in Amoun Pharma<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The global economy <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4c21f101-1408-4586-a7df-f30e0d31ef43\">lost the equivalent<\/a><\/strong><strong> of as many as 255 mn full-time jobs<\/strong> in 2020, according to a report from the International Labor Organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Mid-term exams<\/strong><strong> are under way at public schools and universities<\/strong>, as per the timeline laid out by Education Minister Tarek Shawki and Higher Education Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar earlier this month. The exams are being held with strict precautionary measures \u2014 including wearing face masks and greater physical distancing \u2014 to contain the spread of covid-19, the Higher Education Ministry said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3sECoCZ\">a statement<\/a>. Public schools and universities got an extra week tacked onto their mid-year holiday <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2fe593b4-71c9-4cc5-a539-f6f6c6d2ebd2\">last week<\/a>, with their second term starting today instead of 21 February. We have more on the first day of exams in Last Night\u2019s Talk Shows, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s women empowerment plan is now officially in execution phase:<\/strong> Backing women\u2019s representation and leadership in the corporate world, promoting career-family balance and encourage private investment in elder and child care, and offering training programs in sectors in which women are underrepresented are among the three-year goals for the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/636da4c9-b56a-4c5e-a3b5-0d6b10c58fa4\">Closing the Gender Gap Accelerator<\/a> program, cabinet said in <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3aZPvs9\">a statement<\/a>. The program was launched <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/636da4c9-b56a-4c5e-a3b5-0d6b10c58fa4\">last July<\/a> by the International Cooperation Ministry, the National Council for Women (NCW), and the World Economic Forum. The ministry has<strong> all you need to know about the program <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moic.gov.eg\/ar-EG\/Sectors\/Index?na=55\">here<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Four corporate figures are now in the driver\u2019s seat<\/strong> alongside the ministry and the NCW: CIB chief <strong>Hussein Abaza<\/strong>, Qalaa Holding Managing Director <strong>Hisham El Khazindar<\/strong>, Travco Vice Chairperson <strong>Karim El Chiaty<\/strong>, and Delta Shield Chairperson <strong>Neveen El Tahri<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, the \u201cDecent Life\u201d initiative is now among the UN\u2019s registry of programs that <\/strong><strong>promote sustainable development.<\/strong> The initiative, which was rolled out at the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/01\/03\/el-sisi-launches-a-decent-life-initiative\/\">beginning of 2019<\/a> to improve living conditions for the country\u2019s most needy, was admitted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/partnerships\/about#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20Partnership%20for,of%20the%20Sustainable%20Development%20Goals.\">Partnership for SDGs platform<\/a> as a way to highlight its positive impact on rural communities, Planning and Economic Development Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r3bXpX\">Hala El Said said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 subscribe-box-panel\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"title\">\n<h4 class=\"fw-lighter mb-10\">\n          Get <b style=\"font-weight: 700\">Enterprise<\/b> daily<br \/>\n        <\/h4>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-10\">The roundup of news and trends that move your markets and shape corporate agendas delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"egypt\/en\/user\/NewsLetters\" type=\"button \" class=\"btn-green px-3 d-flex align-items-center\">Subscribe here<\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>US President Joe Biden\u2019s USD 1.9 tn <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/billsthisweek\/20210222\/CRPT-117hrpt8.pdf\">stimulus bill<\/a><\/strong><strong> is one step closer to fruition<\/strong><strong> after it passed in <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.house.gov\/\">a near party-line vote<\/a><\/strong><strong> at the House yesterday morning.<\/strong> Dubbed the \u201cAmerican Rescue Plan,\u201d the bill is designed to stabilize the economy and includes USD 1,400 direct stimulus checks, an extension of federal top-ups of USD 400 per week to unemployment ins. through the end of August, USD 350 bn for state and local governments, USD 50 bn for covid-19 testing and tracing, and USD 130 bn for K-12 schools, in addition to a major expansion of the child tax credit, <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/26\/politics\/stimulus-package-covid-relief-house-vote\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bill is now on its way to the Senate for a vote, where it will likely meet more resistance than it did at the House<\/strong>, even with Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/02\/27\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-american-rescue-plan\/\">urging lawmakers<\/a> to fast-track passing the package. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/27\/heres-whats-in-the-dem-houses-covid-relief-bill.html\">Pundits widely expect<\/a> the Senate to strike down a USD 15 \/ hour minimum wage increase from the current USD 7.25 \/ hour.<\/p>\n<p class='web-image' ><a href='https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1982faaf-4cff-4e56-9b81-ce4a3e8ebcf5'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2021\/2\/Five-year-treasuries-Feb2021-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>MARKET WATCH-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jitters in the US bond market evolved into a tantrum on Thursday<\/strong> as investors anxious about incoming inflation dumped treasuries. Bond yields spiked to their highest levels in almost a year, triggering an equity sell-off which saw tech stocks have their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-24\/asia-stocks-set-to-gain-on-powell-treasuries-drop-markets-wrap?sref=mmeFTDW1\">worst day since October<\/a>. Rates on 10-year bonds surged as high as 1.61%, caused by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1982faaf-4cff-4e56-9b81-ce4a3e8ebcf5\">\u201cextraordinarily weak\u201d<\/a> auction of seven-year notes. \u201cIt was big \u2026 It was almost as if a dam broke,\u201d analysts at Rabobank wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening here?<\/strong> The jitters began as the Biden administration was readying the USD 1.9 tn stimulus bill, and with the Fed continuing to buy bns of USD of treasuries every month, investors are growing increasingly fearful that a pickup in inflation will eat into their returns and are dumping bonds. Not only this, but traders \u2014 with one eye on the run of positive economic data \u2014 are beginning to price in rate hikes further down the line, an idea that the European Central Bank is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-25\/ecb-s-schnabel-warns-rise-in-real-rates-may-hurt-recovery?sref=mmeFTDW1\">already moving to quash<\/a>. Analysts are now concerned that rising yields will start to dim the attractiveness of the stock market, triggering flight from equities into bonds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not great news for emerging markets:<\/strong> Rising rates in the US typically suck capital out of emerging economies and strengthen the greenback, leaving developing nations with weaker currencies and hurting the finances of countries holding a lot of USD-denominated debt. This was seen on Thursday when a basket of EM currencies saw its worst day since the covid crash last March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But on the upside, EMs are <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-16\/europe-falls-behind-emerging-markets-as-bond-market-stress-grows?sref=mmeFTDW1\">still attractive enough<\/a><\/strong><strong> to eurobond investors thanks to<\/strong><strong> negative yields in Europe, with the latest case in point being Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, which sold EUR 1.5 bn of eurobonds at a negative rate, according to a Saudi Finance Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mof.gov.sa\/en\/mediacenter\/News\/Pages\/news2422021.aspx\">statement<\/a>. The sale was c.3x oversubscribed and yields stood at -0.057% for EUR 1 bn of three-year notes and 0.646% for EUR 500 mn nine-year notes.
