We have miles to go before we sleep on this whole pandemic thing, but if you want the world (not just Omm El Donia) to \u201cgo back to normal,\u201d you\u2019ll want to follow this story \u2014 and roll up your sleeve at the earliest chance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TWO BIG STORIES ABROAD <\/strong>are duelling for your attention this morning:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myanmar\u2019s military TV broadcaster has confirmed that the armed forces have taken over <\/strong><strong>the country \u201cfor one year\u201d<\/strong> after security forces arrested Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of the country\u2019s ruling party early this morning. The news is everywhere on front pages globally, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/31\/world\/asia\/myanmar-coup-aung-san-suu-kyi.html\">New York Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1edff5ac-3528-4e51-8ef7-a07858b93442\">Financial Times<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-myanmar-politics\/myanmars-aung-san-suu-kyi-arrested-along-with-other-democratic-leaders-idUSKBN2A00VC\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/02\/01\/myanmars-aung-san-suu-kyi-other-leaders-detained-in-raid-spokesman-says.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201cReddit horde\u201d is moving on to silver<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-31\/silver-spikes-at-the-week-s-open-as-reddit-hordes-pile-in-again?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports, with futures \u201ctopping USD 29 an ounce within minutes as the Reddit-inspired frenzy that roiled stock markets last week spills over into commodities.\u201d The world\u2019s largest silver-backed exchange-traded fund \u201crecorded almost USD 1 bn in inflows on Friday,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d46e8623-09af-4a1f-b7e5-207616388b0f\">Financial Times<\/a> reports, saying \u201cthe jolt of investments came <strong>after a user in Reddit\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/wallstreetbets\/\">r\/WallStreetBets<\/a><\/strong><strong> forum urged people to buy shares and options to put a squeeze on banks<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON A MORE PROSAIC NOTE<\/strong>, here are some domestic news triggers for the coming weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Purchasing managers\u2019 index:<\/strong> January PMI data for Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will land on Wednesday, 3 February.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foreign reserves figures<\/strong> for January should be out toward the end of this week.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inflation figures<\/strong> for January will be released on 10 February.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s interest rate week, and there could be conflicting signals on a rate cut:<\/strong> The CBE will meet on Thursday to review rates, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/10cdf260-5685-4f60-8321-7490de035dbf\">our poll of economists<\/a> forecasts a hold, with Pharos being the only house out of the 12 surveyed to call a cut. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSKBN2A00L2\">Reuters<\/a> suggests that the National Investment Bank\u2019s move to slash yields on investment certificates over the weekend suggests it is bracing for a rate cut. Look for an announcement late on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep your eyes on:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>French visit: <\/strong>France\u2019s finance minister, Bruno Le Maire, is set to visit Egypt some time this month to finalize more than EUR 715 mn in financing from development arm AFD to support water, transport, education and health in Egypt. The funding is part of a EUR 1 bn strategic partnership between the two countries this year, the International Cooperation Ministry said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rcZU9p\">statement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Putin visit in March? <\/strong>Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly due to visit Egypt sometime around March, with an end to his government\u2019s ban on direct flights to the Red Sea being at the top of our wish list.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egycomex delayed again: <\/strong>Trading on the long-awaited commodities exchange (Egycomex) won't happen before the end of 2021 or early 2022, EGX boss Mohamed Farid <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2021\/01\/31\/1415802\">said yesterday<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 subscribe-box-panel\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"title\">\n<h4 class=\"fw-lighter mb-10\">\n          Get <b style=\"font-weight: 700\">Enterprise<\/b> daily<br \/>\n        <\/h4>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-10\">The roundup of news and trends that move your markets and shape corporate agendas delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"egypt\/en\/user\/NewsLetters\" type=\"button \" class=\"btn-green px-3 d-flex align-items-center\">Subscribe here<\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>PSA #1- You just got a tax filing extension. <\/strong>Businesses, sole traders, and anyone who generate income outside of their day job will now have till the end of February to file wage tax returns through the electronic filing system, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3r7mvE7\">statement<\/a>, extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/98be55c7-42e5-4672-9457-a72112711a70\">deadline that was meant to fall yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>PSA #2- It\u2019s not just you \u2014 your mobile internet really is getting slower. <\/strong>Mobile internet speeds at all four of Egypt\u2019s mobile networks slowed considerably during the final quarter of last year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3cux1kO\">results of a quarterly quality of service (QoS) survey<\/a> by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA). Orange Egypt and Vodafone boasted the fastest average speeds yet both operators saw declines, with Orange falling to 23 mbps by the end of December from 34 mbps in October, and Vodafone falling to 23 mbps from 25 mbps. Data speeds offered by Etisalat and We were also considerably slower.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are three days left in CI Capital\u2019s 5th Annual MENA Investor Conference<\/strong>, which kicked off on 26 January and runs until Wednesday, 3 February.
