As liquidity moves away from asset markets to the real economy, buying power could shift from investors to consumers, putting downward pressure on stock prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The SPAC-driven EV frenzy definitely isn\u2019t going to end in tears\u2026<\/strong> The manic inflows into electric vehicle companies taken public by special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) last year shows no signs of abating. The nine companies that debuted via SPACs last year now have a combined market cap of USD 60 bn, but according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/688d8472-c404-42d6-88b7-fbd475e50f7c\">FT<\/a> analysis they have just USD 139 mn in expected revenues. What\u2019s more, several of them have never earned a single greenback or even have any products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also worth knowing this morning:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visa is walking back on a planned USD 5.3 bn <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7efe8474-fed4-4766-820d-75934e17f30f\">acquisition<\/a><\/strong><strong> of US-based<\/strong> <strong>fintech startup <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/plaid.com\/\">Plaid<\/a><\/strong> due to an antitrust lawsuit challenging the bid, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/visa-abandons-planned-acquisition-of-plaid-after-doj-challenge-11610486569?mod=hp_lead_pos3\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hotel occupancy in Dubai surged to 71% in December<\/strong> after plunging to 23% last year, suggesting that the city\u2019s decision to continue welcoming visitors through the second wave of the pandemic is paying off, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-12\/dubai-s-open-city-policy-saw-hotel-bookings-surge-in-december?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div Hong Kong and Australia were in the red but shares in Japan and Korea were making steady gains.
