It\u2019s officially no longer 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since we last wrote to you, the UK\u2019s tumultuous breakup with the EU after a<\/strong><strong> 48-year <\/strong><strong>union finally came to a close.<\/strong> After months of delays and highwire negotiations, the two sides managed to scrape together a last-minute trade pact, preventing a disorderly British exit. In what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-britain-eu\/with-little-ado-a-divided-united-kingdom-casts-off-into-the-brexit-unknown-idUSKBN2950CL\">Reuters<\/a> is calling the \u201cmost significant geopolitical shift since the loss of empire,\u201d the UK has finally left more than 4.5 years after voting to do so, leaving the country divided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the completion of Brexit, Egypt\u2019s new trade agreement with the UK came into effect.<\/strong> President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3pENMNJ\">ratified last month<\/a> the agreement, which UK Trade Envoy to Egypt Sir Jeffery Donaldson <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/3\/12\/393664\/Business\/Economy\/EgyptUK-trade-agreement-takes-effect--December-UK-.aspx\">said<\/a> previously could unlock a spate of fresh British investments in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here at home, the Finance Ministry launched the pilot phase of its <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/48e0d573-1690-4010-b404-18b22ca18587\">unified tax platform<\/a><\/strong><strong> on<\/strong> <strong>Friday.<\/strong> 11k of the country\u2019s largest taxpayers must now file returns and pay taxes through the platform, which will also allow businesses to register for tax, settle unpaid taxes, and make enquiries to the Tax Authority. The move to an electronic platform will help the state ensure better oversight and put an end to tax evasion, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mof.gov.eg\/Arabic\/MOFNews\/WhatsNew\/Pages\/breakingnews31-12-2020-1.aspx\">the ministry said<\/a> this weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abroad, all of that worry about a stock market bubble? <\/strong>New Year\u2019s bubbly didn\u2019t make it go away, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-02\/dizzying-valuations-ipo-craze-tick-boxes-on-bubble-checklist?srnd=premium-middle-east&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. We haven\u2019t heard any details since last month, when Bloomberg reported Mnuchin will also make stops in Sudan, the UAE, Israel, and Qatar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The expo for the government\u2019s multi-year natural gas transition plan \u2014 <\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mjuy1u\">the Go<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2Mjuy1u\">Green Exhibition<\/a><\/strong><strong> \u2014 will start tomorrow and run until Wednesday <\/strong>at the National Exhibition Center on the Mosheer El Tantawy Road. The details of the government\u2019s campaign to convert existing vehicles to natural gas engines will be announced at the expo, with plans to cover 70k cars that have been on the road for over 20 years in 2021\u2014 including 55k taxis and passenger cars and 15k microbuses.
