{"id":558799,"date":"2021-08-26T04:35:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-26T04:35:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2021\/08\/26\/gerd-hasnt-hurt-sudans-water-supply-just-yet\/"},"modified":"2021-08-26T04:35:01","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T04:35:01","slug":"gerd-hasnt-hurt-sudans-water-supply-just-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2021\/08\/26\/gerd-hasnt-hurt-sudans-water-supply-just-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"GERD hasn\u2019t hurt Sudan\u2019s water supply just yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Sudan says GERD filling had no impact on water supply, but preparing for <\/strong><strong>the unknown was expensive and caused <\/strong><strong>indirect socioeconomic damage:<\/strong> The second filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam\u2019s (GERD) reservoir, which Addis Ababa <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f9bac17b-7239-47c1-bef4-22223142b14b\">concluded late last month<\/a>, \u201cmade no negative impact\u201d on the annual seasonal flooding this year, but instead had a \u201cmajor socioeconomic impact\u201d in the absence of an agreement with Ethiopia on the filling and operation of the dam, Sudanese Irrigation Minister Yasir Abbas <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MinY_Abbas\/status\/1430484961602285568\">tweeted<\/a> yesterday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/sudan-says-ethiopian-dam-made-no-impact-floods-this-year-2021-08-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> also has the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of damage are we talking? <\/strong>Ethiopia\u2019s move to unilaterally fill the dam without reaching a binding agreement with Egypt and Sudan forced Khartoum to undertake \u201ccostly\u201d crisis-management measures in case of destructive floods or water shortages, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d81de93d-da0b-49a2-a919-17b76b8c39dd\">last year<\/a> when Ethiopia\u2019s unilateral filling of GERD directly contributed to the severe Blue Nile flooding that caused mass devastation in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the bright side: <\/strong>Sudan was for the first time able to use its own dams to ease the intensity of the annual heavy floods \u2014 which have historically <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/09\/1074152\">devastated communities across Sudan<\/a>. Flooding in July saw an \u201cunexpected\u201d amount of water flowing from the White Nile \u2014 one of the river\u2019s main tributaries, resulting in more flooding than country had faced over the past century. This year\u2019s floods saw a record daily flow of 120-130 mn cubic metres per day, compared with previous summer seasons that varied between 70 and 80 mn cubic metres daily, he explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Still no word on the impact on Egypt: <\/strong>We haven\u2019t heard anything from domestic policymakers on whether or not the GERD\u2019s second filling had a direct impact on Egypt\u2019s water supply. But the prospect of a water shortage has Egypt prioritising water resources projects, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9a79aecc-e12f-4ef3-96da-9bd999e0818d\">rehabilitation and lining of canals<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a70db4f1-664a-4a7b-ad25-022b8b2d3e1d\">seawater desalination plants<\/a>, which President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f9bac17b-7239-47c1-bef4-22223142b14b\">said<\/a> would help offset the effect of the dam on Egypt\u2019s water supply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And GERD talks are still in limbo: <\/strong>Four days of talks in April between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia in Kinshasa <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fed1a86a-7b61-41be-828c-d1a714e4de03\">once again reached a dead-end<\/a> after the three countries were unable to agree on how to proceed with negotiations.
