Good morning, wonderful people<\/strong>, and welcome to a really big news day.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s day two of the first \u201cstrategic dialogue\u201d between Egypt and the United States in more <\/strong>than half a decade. <\/strong>The sea change in bilateral ties since the early days of the Biden administration <\/strong>was on clear display yesterday as Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed reporters at the start of talks in DC.<\/p>\n

How it started:<\/strong> US President Joe Biden talked up human rights on the campaign trail, raising concerns about close ties Egypt enjoyed under Trump and vowing there would be \u201cno more blank checks<\/a>\u201d for Cairo. Blinken<\/a> had been critical<\/a> about Egypt\u2019s human rights record and Biden officials signaled during the transition<\/a> that the US could cut military aid<\/a>. Two former State Department officials turned members of Congress then formed an \u201cEgypt Human Rights Committee<\/a>\u201d on the anniversary of the 25 January Revolution. (Yes, we know, incoming administration \u2260 House of Reps, but still\u2026)<\/p>\n

How it\u2019s going: <\/strong>In warm remarks yesterday, Blinken referred to Shoukry as a \u201cfriend\u201d and emphasized that the foreign minister\u2019s visit to DC was a homecoming of sorts \u2014 a nod to Shoukry\u2019s time as our ambassador to Washington. Blinken talked up our countries\u2019 \u201c100-year relationship\u201d and suggested we\u2019d be seeing more talks in the future. The first strategic dialogue in six years means the meetings are happening \u201ctoo far apart given how many common interests and challenges\u201d the two countries have and \u201cwe\u2019re going to get it back on a regular cadence<\/strong>,\u201d Blinken promised.<\/p>\n

What changed? <\/strong>Egypt stepped in to broker a ceasefire between the Israelis and Palestinians (getting a visit from Blinken in return<\/a>, but no overt backing of our stance on GERD), is working with the US on critical regional security issues including Libya, is playing ball on Iran, and has signalled that it\u2019s taking US human rights concerns seriously after DC withheld a token amount of military aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a> Nafeza looks like it's having growing pains: <\/strong>The Cairo Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Customs Committee will hold an urgent meeting today with the Customs Authority to discuss issues importers are facing with the Advance Cargo Information (ACI)<\/a> system, according to Al Mal<\/a>. The newspaper gives few details about what technical problems importers are encountering, but suggests that businesses bringing goods through Nuweiba port have been unable to access their ACIDs \u2014 a unique number needed to file the documentation needed for clearance \u2014 leading the authority to exempt them from having to do this for one week.<\/p>\n

ACI has been up and running since the beginning of October<\/strong>, with more than 24k importers registered on Nafeza, and nearly 53k foreign exporters signing up on CargoX, which allows shippers to Egypt to upload shipping documents, as of two weeks ago. THE BIG STORY ABROAD- What\u2019s keeping the Fed awake at night? Chinese real estate <\/strong>and meme stocks \u2014 and things are getting even more complicated today in the world\u2019s most populous country <\/strong>as another big real estate developer teeters on the edge of an Evergrande-style meltdown. Struggling developer Kaisa is asking investors for more \u201ctime and patience\u201d<\/a> on the same day that the Fed\u2019s closely watched <\/strong>semi-annual report (pdf)<\/a><\/strong> signalled that a real estate meltdown in China could \u201cstrain global financial markets through a deterioration of risk sentiment, pose risks to global economic growth, and affect the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

CLOSER TO HOME- The US and the African Union think there\u2019s a narrow window in <\/strong>Ethiopia <\/strong>in which to try to broker a negotiated solution. The AU said yesterday on Twitter<\/a> that it was holding talks on the situation as Tigrayan rebels march on Addis Ababa<\/a>. The AU\u2019s Olusegun Obasanjo has recently met<\/a> with Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed and Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front leader Debretsion Gebremichael. Washington reportedly believes there\u2019s a narrow chance of a negotiated settlement<\/a> \u2014 diplomatic-speak for \u201cdon\u2019t hold your breath<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

SIGN OF THE TIMES- The Fed isn\u2019t wrong to be concerned about the flood of retail <\/strong>investors into meme stocks and other equities. <\/strong>Wall Street stocks \u201ccompleted their longest run of closing highs since 1997<\/a>\u201d yesterday \u2014 the same day that trading app Robinhood exposed mns of customer names and emails addresses in a massive hack<\/a><\/strong>, the company said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

UPDATE- BP is not among the energy companies bidding to establish hydrogen <\/strong>plants in Egypt.<\/strong> BP has not placed a bid, a company representative told us, denying a report published in the Arabic-language website Attaqa<\/a> that we took note of yesterday. We have updated the story<\/a> on our website to reflect this change.<\/p>\n
