The gist of what happened in real life (and in the Netflix docuseries) is as follows: GameStop was the most-shorted company on Wall Street in 2020, as hedge fund managers predicted the heavily brick-and-mortar store selling physical media would go belly up in an increasingly digital world (which goes double for the video-game industry itself). What started out as a sound assumption quickly spiraled out of control. When some astute number-crunching Redditors realized how much money was stacked against GameStop's survival, they swooped in and sent the stock price soaring in January 2021.
