<\/a> Egypt mediates truce between Israel + Gaza militants: <\/strong>Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) have agreed to an Egypt-brokered ceasefire that started last night following three days of deadly violence that left 44 dead in Gaza, including two senior PIJ figures. The truce came into effect at 11.30pm and the two sides confirmed in statements<\/a> to reporters that they had accepted the terms and thanked Egypt for its efforts to bring an end to the fighting, but warned that they would respond to any violations.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire came after Egyptian officials spent hours making phone calls Sunday afternoon with both parties<\/strong>, security sources told state-owned Extra News<\/a>. An Egyptian intelligence delegation was also reportedly in Israel yesterday in a push for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Egypt had to make promises to PIJ:<\/strong> Egypt agreed to lobby Israel to release two PIJ members under the terms agreed for the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Cairo has been a crucial mediator between Israel and Palestine in recent years<\/strong>, successfully brokering a ceasefire<\/a> to end 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas in May 2021.<\/p>\n

The human toll: <\/strong>The fighting has left at least 44 Palestinians dead, including 15 children, and over 310 injured, Sky News Arabia<\/a> reported. No Israeli casualties have been reported.<\/p>\n

The ceasefire comes after an Israeli airstrike killed another PIJ figurehead: <\/strong>Israeli forces killed Khaled Mansour, who led the Islamic Jihad\u2019s operations in the southern Gaza Strip, on Saturday, the Associated Press<\/a> reports. This comes just a few days after Israel assassinated Tayseer Jabari<\/a>, who led the group in the north of the strip, the act which sparked the new round of violence between the two sides.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
