As attention pivots to the Ukrainian crisis and rising inflation in developed countries, emerging markets risk \"falling through the cracks of the global safety net,\" Murtaza Syed says in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f0e2df4c-f64b-4820-b3b3-27389b256ecf\">Financial Times<\/a> op-ed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOld-fashioned\u201d and \u201cstandoffish\u201d:<\/strong> At a time when the world is facing a global recession spurred by the Fed's recent rate hike, Syed says multilateral and bilateral donor agencies have been reticent to step in \u2014 and where they have, they\u2019ve insisted on tying help to rigid conditions, leaving many debt-laden developing countries to fend for themselves. Meanwhile, Western multilaterals appear uneasy about engaging with a new world in which China has emerged as a big investor and creditor, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This may ring some bells: <\/strong>Egypt is currently in talks to secure an assistance package from the IMF \u2014 but there will be strings attached, with the lender\u2019s executive board <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4c1d4faf-a5be-4238-a39f-fb90d897192a\">last week calling<\/a> on the government to take \u201cdecisive\u201d steps on fiscal and structural reforms to reduce its exposure to external shocks.
