You\u2019ll work hand-in-hand with our founding editor to get it off the ground and then run the franchise going forward as a member of our senior newsroom team. You\u2019ll need to be comfortable reporting and writing stories with voice and nuance across the Arab world \u2014 and leading a team that includes another full-time reporter (you\u2019ll be hiring) while managing other reporters from across our >60-person newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-10\" id=\"h-the-product\"><span style=\"color: #29990b;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The product<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 mb-16 has-small-font-size\"><strong>You\u2019ll own AI + Tech coverage across our MENA+ flagship newsletter and national editions, among other products.<\/strong> We\u2019re looking for someone who has a voice and a point of view \u2014 but who believes in strong opinions, loosely held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 mb-16 has-small-font-size\">The Arab world is rich with AI and tech stories: From USD 93 bn in data centre buildouts in the medium term and Gulf sovereigns as big investors in global AI, tech, and gaming players \u2014 to how AI (in particular) is playing out in businesses across MENA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 has-small-font-size\">We\u2019re looking for people who want to tell stories that matter to an audience of decision makers across the Arab world \u2014 as well as investors and execs outside looking for an in. There are tech-trade titles writing for CIOs and procurement bots \u2014 and there are press-release factories \u2014 but we don\u2019t think anyone has gotten the AI and tech story right from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh to Cairo and Rabat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-10\" id=\"h-the-role\"><span style=\"color: #29990b;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">The role<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 has-small-font-size\"><strong>Senior writer and lead editor on a two-person desk<\/strong>, with other reporters and editors pulled in on an as-needed basis. You\u2019ll write reported features and analytical pieces, develop sources across G42, Humain, the regional sovereigns, consultancies, and the companies they\u2019re all counting on to buy this stuff and make it real. You\u2019ll help shape the editorial voice and the franchise as it grows, from newsletters to events. You\u2019ll work closely with our editor-in-chief \/ CEO as well as with the executive editors of our newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-10\" id=\"h-what-we-want\"><span style=\"color: #29990b;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">What we want<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list mt-0 has-small-font-size\">\n<li><strong>A minimum of 5 years in journalism<\/strong> with tons of ambition and a proven ability to get people talking about AI, technology and business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A mix of both reporting and analysis skills<\/strong> including a plan for how you\u2019ll develop sources in MENA+ if you aren\u2019t already familiar with our region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A voice we can hear in your work.<\/strong> We aren\u2019t looking for robots who can push out press-release rewrites or bone-dry copy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comfortable on a small team and at newsletter pace.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Middle East experience is welcome but not required<\/strong> \u2014 we\u2019ll get you up to speed on our part of the world if you meet us part way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You\u2019re allergic to hype, you\u2019ll call BS on vaporware, but you\u2019re not a doomer.<\/strong> \u201cShow me\u201d is our editorial line: We deflate the Gulf and AI hype machines equally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What we DON\u2019T want: <\/strong>Factory-scale tech news output, press release rewrites, AI fanboys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading mb-10\" id=\"h-compensation-and-location\"><span style=\"color: #29990b;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">Compensation and location<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 mb-16 has-small-font-size\"><strong>We pay internationally competitive salaries (UK \/ Canadian \/ European scale)<\/strong>, but we\u2019re not Dubai or New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 mb-16 has-small-font-size\"><strong>We have a preference for candidates based in Cairo \/ Riyadh \/ Abu Dhabi,<\/strong> but are happy to consider candidates outside the Arab world who can travel several times a year to the region for multi-week reporting trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"mt-0 has-small-font-size\"><strong>The position is not fully \u201casync\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 we would expect you to be engaged on deadline when we close out issues (early morning Cairo time) and to be able to communicate on Google Meet calls with our team during newsroom hours.
