The shift in mood is stark this morning after the overnight <\/strong><strong>announcement of a two-week ceasefire<\/strong> between the US and Iran. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt4\"><\/a> <strong>Here\u2019s what we know: <\/strong>Washington will \u201csuspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks\u201d if Tehran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116365796713313030\" style=\"\">said<\/a>. Tehran <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/araghchi\/status\/2041655156215799821?s=20\" style=\"\">responded by saying<\/a> it would halt its attacks across the Gulf if the US and Israel stop their attacks. The Islamic Republic also said it would open the Strait of Hormuz, allowing vessels to transit the waterway in coordination with Iranian armed forces. This came hours before Trump\u2019s deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or else a \u201cwhole civilization will die.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What happens next?<\/strong> The two sides will meet on Friday to \u201cfurther negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CMShehbaz\/status\/2041665043423752651?s=20\" style=\"\">said<\/a>. Trump said Iran presented a 10-point proposal, which he called a \u201cworkable basis on which to negotiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The question is whether the ceasefire will hold: <\/strong>A US official told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/iran-war-trump-news\" style=\"\">New York Times<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/iran-war-trump-news\" style=\"\"><\/a> that the US halted strikes against Iran in accordance with the agreement shortly after the announcement. Still, the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait reported a fresh round of missile attacks. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Market reax: <\/strong>Oil dipped <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-07\/latest-oil-market-news-and-analysis-for-april-8?srnd=homepage-middle-east\" style=\"\">below USD 100 per barrel<\/a> following the news, with Brent dropping as much as 16% to below USD 92 earlier today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Asian markets cheered the ceasefire<\/strong>, with Japan\u2019s Nikkei climbing over 5% and South Korea\u2019s Kospi rising almost 6% in early trading. Western futures markets \u2014 in the US and Europe \u2014 also posted gains across the board.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What this means for us here at home: <\/strong>If the ceasefire holds, look for the <strong>EGP to gradually <\/strong><strong>strengthen<\/strong> against the greenback after a wave of war-triggered hot money outflows dragged the currency to record lows. Improving sentiment should buoy the EGX, which has also taken it on the chin the past few weeks, and <strong>reset the clock on hotly anticipated IPOs<\/strong>, including that of Banque du Caire. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A reward for staying the course? <\/strong>Investor sentiment may be slow to return \u2014 much of it is out of our hands \u2014 but the feeling among portfolio managers we speak with is that the Madbouly government deserves an \u201cA\u201d for its handling of the fallout from the crisis. The Cabinet and the central bank showed significant policy maturity. The big one: <strong>Officials kept their fingers off the scale and allowed the EGP to serve as shock absorber.<\/strong> That allowed investors to get their money out without drama \u2014 something they\u2019ll remember, as they did in the wake of the flight to safety that accompanied Trump\u2019s \u2018Liberation Day\u2019 tariffs last year. (Was that really just\u2026 last year?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Still very much in question:<\/strong> The 9pm curfew on commercial activity and other measures taken to counter the jump in fuel import bills \u2014 when (and how fast) those get scrapped is a direct function of how quickly Gulf exporters including Kuwait (oil) and Qatar (natural gas) bring production and export sales back online. Pundits expect a period of elevated prices even if Qatar, for example, is able to return to pre-war production levels in weeks, not months or years. Its key export facility took significant damage from Iranian strikes earlier in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So, yeah: You may now issue a (tentative) sigh of relief. <\/strong>Maybe don\u2019t pivot back to your pre-war posture just yet \u2014 it\u2019s a two-week ceasefire \u2014 but\u2026 just let out that breath and be extra thankful we have a holiday long weekend coming up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/enterpriseam-egypt\" style=\"\">WISH THIS MORNING\u2019S ISSUE was a podcast? The discovery at the Denise W 1 exploration well in the Temsah concession \u201creinforces Eni\u2019s commitment to supporting Egypt\u2019s national goals of boosting reserves and increasing gas production,\" the company said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>The find is no Zohr for sure, but 2 tcf of gas is a sizable discovery that should have a tangible impact on our energy import bill. Importantly, it also looks like gas could start flowing from the well soon, as it \u201clies 70 km offshore in 95 m of water depth and less than 10 km from existing infrastructure, enabling substantial synergies for a fast-track development,\u201d according to Eni.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The players:<\/strong> Eni holds a 50% operating interest in the Denise development lease, with BP holding the remaining 50%. The asset is managed through Petrobel, the joint venture between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a> <strong>DEVELOPMENT FINANCE \u2014 Could Egypt be in store for a big chunk of <\/strong><strong>change from the Afreximbank?<\/strong> The African Export-Import Bank approved a USD 10 bn facility to shield African and Caribbean economies from the economic fallout of the ongoing war in the region, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/afreximbank.africa-newsroom.com\/press\/afreximbank-to-avail-us10-billion-under-its-gulf-crisis-response-programme-gcrp-to-shield-african-and-caricom-economies-from-the-ongoing-conflict?lang=en\" style=\"\">statement<\/a> from the lender.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Although the specific countries to be targeted by the Gulf Crisis Response Program <\/strong><strong>were not named, we think there\u2019s a good chance Egypt will be on the list. <\/strong>The funds will partly go toward securing essential imports of LNG, which only a few countries on the continent, alongside Egypt, have the infrastructure to import. style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>Shipping lines flirting with ethanol in pivot away from China to appease Trump <\/strong><strong>could be bad news for our green bunkering ambitions. <\/strong>With maritime decarbonization ambitions suffering a significant blow after the Trump administration pressured the International Maritime Organization\u2019s member states with tariff and sanction threats to ditch adopting its Net-Zero Framework to price maritime shipping emissions, Maersk is changing tactics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Methanol\u2019s dominance in the global maritime decarbonization strategy \u2014 and China\u2019s <\/strong><strong>place as the premier supplier of green fuels \u2014 is being challenged. <\/strong>The world\u2019s second-largest shipping line successfully trialled a 50-50 ethanol-methanol mix for one of its vessels in December, with the aim of eventually using a 100% ethanol mix. Driving the pivot toward the use of bioethanol isn\u2019t technical; it's geopolitical \u2014 while China is the clear leader in green methanol, the US is (not coincidentally) the world\u2019s top producer of fuel ethanol. \u201cIf all the upside is only in China, then some countries will object,\u201d Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5fe10686-7c46-4a93-8372-7c1356659f54\" style=\"\">explained to the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This leaves Egypt\u2019s multi-bn green hydrogen and methanol pipeline \u2014 projects led by Scatec, <\/strong><strong>Fertiglobe, and Maersk\u2019s own C2X \u2014 at risk. <\/strong>These projects were planned for a world that agreed on a carbon price higher than that offered by ethanol and had green hydrogen and methanol at the center of these plans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Wrong fuel, wrong place<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s competitive advantage lies in its vast, uninhabited desert \u2014 but only if green <\/strong><strong>hydrogen and methanol are what you\u2019re gunning for. <\/strong>The country\u2019s multi-bn National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy and ambitious green bunkering ambitions centred around using solar and wind to create green hydrogen are a great fit for the country\u2019s geography, but bioethanol is a very different animal, with less than 5% of the country cultivable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>Green methanol is an industrial fuel produced from green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide, which requires only land to host solar or wind projects and a plant to create the fuel. In contrast, green ethanol is a biological fuel created through the natural fermentation of plant sugars by yeast \u2014 a process that requires thousands of acres of cultivable land and massive amounts of fresh water to grow the feedstock, or residues like used cooking oil and wheat straw. These commodities are much less plentiful in Egypt than the sun and desert land along the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The country is among the most land-constrained and water-scarce nations <\/strong><strong>on earth<\/strong>, with food security understandably taking precedence over any green fuel export plans. Egypt can produce bioethanol at low levels for chemical exports, but scaling production to meet the needs of the maritime industry is a very different equation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To put things in perspective, the <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/a-look-through-the-governments-efforts-to-make-egypts-petrochemicals-industry-greener\/\" style=\"\">Egyptian Bioethanol Company\u2019s planned<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/a-look-through-the-governments-efforts-to-make-egypts-petrochemicals-industry-greener\/\" style=\"\">USD 135 mn,<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/goinggreens\/a-look-through-the-governments-efforts-to-make-egypts-petrochemicals-industry-greener\/\" style=\"\">capacity Damietta plant<\/a><\/strong><strong> would not even produce enough to power two 17k+ TEU vessels.<\/strong> To fuel a fleet, Egypt would not only need many more projects like this, but also \u2014 and more importantly \u2014 enough byproducts to fuel them or crops grown specifically as feedstock on limited agricultural land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And even if Egypt could find the land, it can never compete on price against the US <\/strong><strong>Midwest or the Brazilian interior.<\/strong> In those regions, ethanol is a commodity produced with massive economies of scale and rain-fed agriculture. Egypt\u2019s agriculture is entirely irrigation-based, making its feedstock inherently more expensive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">But Egypt is not without options<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While the US works to dismantle carbon emission reduction initiatives, the European <\/strong><strong>Union is moving in the opposite direction <\/strong>with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism \u2014 commonly known as CBAM. Although this levy may seem like an existential threat to fertilizer, cement, aluminum, and steel manufacturers, it simultaneously creates a sizable offtake market for those looking to launch green hydrogen projects in Egypt. Even before talk of green ethanol or votes to delay maritime carbon emission rules further complicated the country\u2019s green bunkering ambitions, redirecting planned green hydrogen output to greening domestic manufacturing has been highlighted as a logical reaction to the lack of offtake demand abroad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt can also still sell \u2014 and earn from \u2014 fueling ships passing through the Suez <\/strong><strong>Canal, even if the fuel wasn\u2019t produced here. <\/strong>By partly repositioning as a regional processing and blending hub for ethanol, Egypt could still place itself in the value chain by importing ethanol and processing it into marine-grade fuel for passing ships. The country already seems to be working toward this with a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2025\/11\/27\/govt-readies-usd-1-bn-suez-canal-bunkering-stations-project\/\" style=\"\">USD 1 bn plan to build bunkering stations along the canal<\/a> in the works, which should, in theory, be able to fuel any ship, whatever type of fuel it uses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And beyond the recent hype around ethanol, methanol is still the maritime industry's <\/strong><strong>main route to decarbonizing. <\/strong>While ethanol as a fuel source for cargo ships is just in early trial phases to assess feasibility, there are already 38 methanol-powered cargo vessels in service with another 186 on order, according to data from Alphaliner.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div class=\"tags-section\">\n        <div
