in Egypt<\/strong> through a well-organized, dignified, and contemporary framework.\u201d Serenity for Investment and Real Estate Management\u2019s EGP 5 bn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2026\/02\/04\/serenity-commits-egp-5-bn-to-professionalizing-the-egyptian-afterlife\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">plan to build a 58-feddan memorial garden<\/a> caught our interest, so we decided to sit down with Serenity\u2019s co-founder Laithy Mekawy to find out more about the project and how they\u2019re designing it to make sure it lives up to its name.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The name Serenity was born out of the contrast between the chaos of local <\/strong><strong>cemeteries and the \u201cpeaceful, clean, and organized\u201d shariah burial experiences <\/strong>the partners encountered abroad. \u201cWe sat and we spoke and we realized how [abroad] things are organized [\u2026] and here\u2019s where the name came from,\u201d Mekawy tells us. The goal was to replicate that \u201cinner serenity\u201d in an Egyptian context, where the experience can often be daunting and chaotic for those wishing to visit their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While typical cemeteries reach up to 70% density, Serenity\u2019s is capped at 40%<\/strong>, a move intended to replace claustrophobic walls with openness. \u201cThe density is much less than everywhere else [...] which gives us much more space for green areas, wider roads,\u201d Mekawy explains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Away from brick-and-mortar plans, landscaping is set to play an important role in helping <\/strong><strong>the site<\/strong> \u2014 which Mekawy very deliberately described as a memorial garden \u2014 live up to its name. \u201cWe want people to be able to park their cars and enjoy the quietness of the lush landscape \u2014 the bougainvilleas, the palms, and the natural shading,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>To prevent the 58-feddan site from feeling like a monolithic development, Mekawy said <\/strong><strong>they avoided a traditional repetitive grid in favor of distinct \u201cclusters.\u201d<\/strong> By breaking the land into smaller groups of buildings separated by greenery and focal points, the layout creates a sense of openness. \u201cWe didn't make it all continuous in one line. We made it clusters [...] so people have more openness when they're walking around. They look left and right. It\u2019s more open, not walking in between walls,\u201d he says, ensuring the scale remains human and intimate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And to maintain this peace even during growth, the site is phased by 15-meter-wide <\/strong><strong>roads.<\/strong> \u201cEach cluster is a phase [\u2026] people won't feel the construction in other zones. Speaking to us this week is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/uk\/en\/about\/story\/impact\/the-deloitte-innovation-hub.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Deloitte Innovation Hub<\/a> CEO and Managing Partner Hani Girgis (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hanigirgis\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>). <strong>Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>My name is Hani Girgis.<\/strong> I\u2019m the CEO and managing partner of the Deloitte Innovation Hub and a senior partner at Deloitte UK. Outside of work, I\u2019m also known as Hani G and, more importantly, I\u2019m a father of three. I\u2019m the oldest of five siblings, was born and raised in Denmark, and have lived in more than 10 countries over the years. Originally, though, I\u2019m Egyptian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Deloitte is one of the oldest professional services companies in the world<\/strong>, and we\u2019ve been in Egypt for a very long time \u2014 but the Deloitte Innovation Hub has only been in Egypt for just over two years. The story is very simple: from an EMEA perspective, we were looking for a location that would have the most amazing talent \u2014 and where we can help create the most talent. With that in mind, we spent a lot of time working with ITIDA \u2014 which was very, very valuable to us \u2014 and we ultimately decided that the place to grow our next innovation hub would be in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We\u2019re all about helping our clients deliver technological transformation.<\/strong> In the age of AI, agentic, and cyber, we typically help clients solve very complex problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>You can\u2019t talk about technology today without talking about AI \u2014<\/strong> <strong>and increasingly <\/strong><strong>agentic AI.<\/strong> We\u2019ve been hearing and talking about AI for a while, but the key is distinguishing the reality from the hype. A lot of money has been invested in AI, and there are lots of proofs of concept \u2014 the question is what actually translates into direct, productionized systems. So we\u2019re helping clients filter through the right use cases and the right technology stack, because it\u2019s fast-evolving \u2014 you can\u2019t even blink without a new technology or a new release coming out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A lot of people talk about a structured routine, but I\u2019m unfortunately a very unstructured <\/strong><strong>person.<\/strong> I\u2019m on a plane quite often, so my routine is basically wherever I am. For example, I\u2019ll usually take an overnight red-eye, land in Cairo at 5:30am, and go straight to the office. There I\u2019ll get freshened up, get ready, and be at my desk by 6:00 or 6:30am.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>When I\u2019m in London at home, it\u2019s different. <\/strong>If I have to go off to clients, it\u2019s about making sure I understand the meetings I\u2019m getting into, making sure I\u2019m briefed, and that I face the day with a step in my stride. So unfortunately, I\u2019m not someone who wakes up every day at 5am to go to the gym for an hour and a half. I\u2019d love to \u2014 the intent is there \u2014 but what I would like my morning routine to be like and the reality are two very different things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>One thing that stays the same, however, is that no two days are the same<\/strong>, and that\u2019s the beauty of my work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I\u2019m very much a people person.<\/strong> I\u2019m maybe not as \u201cproductive\u201d as most leaders are, but where I don\u2019t focus on productivity, I focus on spending time with people. In my diary, you\u2019ll see back-to-back meetings, but I deliberately put in slots where I go and just walk the corridors. When I\u2019m in Cairo, for example, I\u2019ll talk to people in HR, talk to people in finance, talk to my practitioners. At the end of the day, we\u2019re a people business \u2014 and unless you know and appreciate what\u2019s happening at all layers of the onion, so to speak, you lose out.    <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I stay focused and organized because I have the most amazing executive assistant on <\/strong><strong>earth.<\/strong> She\u2019s been with me forever, and [our] meeting is only in the diary because she told me, \u201cthis is the most important meeting you need to do.\u201d And I have to give credit to my whole team as well. As you get more responsibilities, you have to accept that you can\u2019t own and control everything, and that you need to rely on your team to direct you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I think the responsibility of any leader is to empower the team.<\/strong> I was introduced many years ago to the idea that while leadership is often represented as a pyramid with the leader at the top, you can flip that pyramid upside down. My job is to empower the immediate folks working with me \u2014 my COO, offering leads, technology evangelists, and HR \u2014 so that they, in turn, empower the teams beneath them. At the end of the day, it comes down to two things: empowerment and direction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Work-life balance is about context<\/strong>, including who you are as an individual and where you are in your life. In my early twenties, for example, I doubled down on work. But then in 2008, when I had my first child, Isabel, I absolutely put work on the back burner. I firmly believe in working hard, but that doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t believe in balancing this with personal life. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>When I\u2019m done with work, I do two key things.<\/strong> First, I love reading \u2014 and I\u2019m not going to lie, it\u2019s not like I\u2019m reading fantastic self-help books. I read fiction: detective stories, crime, that kind of thing. Second, I watch a lot of TV \u2014 including a lot of nonsense. Netflix, Prime, whatever \u2014 there\u2019s almost no series I haven\u2019t seen. I\u2019d also like to do more Jiu Jitsu \u2014 I did it for four years and discovered it very late in my life \u2014 but I haven\u2019t done it for at least a year because I\u2019m on a plane the whole time and I make excuses for myself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On a personal level, I turn 50 this year.<\/strong> I\u2019m not really one for setting big goals, but I was adamant I was going to run a full marathon by the age of 50, and I haven\u2019t. I\u2019ve run a half-marathon and would still love to complete a full marathon \u2014 even if I do it slower than a turtle \u2014 just to say I\u2019ve achieved it and for the discipline of training up for something like that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Professionally, I want to grow the Deloitte Innovation Hub to be the best place for talent <\/strong><strong>to want to come to in the tech and innovation space in Egypt. <\/strong>We\u2019ve gone from zero to 680 people in 25 months \u2014 and with God\u2019s grace, we\u2019re going to be 12k people. That\u2019s my magic number.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The best piece of advice I was given came from one of the first managers I ever worked<\/strong><strong> for <\/strong>\u2014 and honestly, he wasn\u2019t the best manager. Everything he embodied is everything I\u2019ve grown not to want to be. But his advice stuck with me: always pay attention to everybody.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>If you want access to the CEO, the most important person is not the CEO \u2014 it\u2019s the<\/strong><strong> secretary. <\/strong>If you just walk in and say, \u201cI want to meet him,\u201d you\u2019re just one of many. But if every day you walk into the office and say good morning to the secretary, and you treat that person like an individual, then one day, when you actually need something, that\u2019s your
