With reports that Tehran\u2019s crackdown on nationwide protests has left over 2k dead and US President Donald Trump signaling a potential military response, the \u201cgeopolitical risk premium\u201d has returned to oil markets. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Markets moved accordingly:<\/strong> Oil reached its highest level so far this year yesterday, with Brent climbing to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/oil-prices-pause-gains-venezuela-shipments-resume-iran-concerns-loom-2026-01-14\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 66.10 per barrel<\/a>, after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/logistics\/2026\/01\/14\/today-sisco-holding-is-now-a-majority-shareholder-in-pss\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">pausing<\/a> temporarily on Tuesday as Venezuelan crude <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/oil-prices-pause-gains-venezuela-shipments-resume-iran-concerns-loom-2026-01-14\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">went on water<\/a>. By late December, more than 50 mn bbl of Iranian crude were moving through these shadow routes \u2014 the highest level in over two years, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-12\/oil-prices-and-iran-protests-how-could-escalation-of-crisis-impact-industry\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> cites Kpler data. Official customs data may not show Iranian barrels since mid-2022, but ship-tracking data does.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Supply is now stuck: <\/strong>Iran\u2019s floating storage has climbed to some 166 mn bbl as buyers delay unloading and shipping becomes more complicated, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/irans-oil-stored-water-hits-record-high-kpler-says-2026-01-12\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> \u2019 data shows. <\/p><p class=\"tag-border-left\">Where the risk shows up<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The spread that says more than the headline: <\/strong>Brent\u2019s premium over Dubai crude <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/ar\/business\/7CQLDZTWSVKHVKUUWHXKPXOB3M-2026-01-13\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">widened<\/a> on Tuesday to its highest level since July.
