upend the Red Sea apple cart as it became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>Plus \u00e7a change, plus c\u2019est la m\u00eame chose. <\/strong><\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong> UP FIRST- <\/strong><strong>Israel became the first UN member state to formally<\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/event-somaliland261225\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/event-somaliland261225\" rel=\"noopener\">recognize<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/event-somaliland261225\" rel=\"noopener\">Somaliland's<\/a><\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/pages\/event-somaliland261225\" rel=\"noopener\">independence<\/a><\/strong><strong> on Friday<\/strong>, a move that could alter the security architecture of the Red Sea and give Addis Ababa the legal cover it needs to proceed with its contested 50-year port lease at Berbera. Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu framed the recognition as an expansion of the Abraham Accords, with Somaliland\u2019s leader, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, saying his enclave would join the framework.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;text-align:left\"><strong>For Egypt, this is the crossing of a major red line:<\/strong> By granting Somaliland legitimacy, Israel has effectively validated Ethiopia\u2019s controversial 50-year port-lease agreement, which previously lacked a legal sovereign partner. easing for 2025 to 725 bps<\/strong>, further ending the ultra-restrictive cycle that defined the Egyptian economy since the March 2024 currency float before rate easing began.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>By the numbers: <\/strong>The committee set the overnight deposit rate at 20.00%, the overnight lending rate at 21.0%, and the main operation and disc. rates at 20.50%, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/news-publications\/news\/2025\/12\/25\/15\/51\/mpc-press-release-25-december-2025\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. <strong>Interest rates now stand at their lowest level since January 2024. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Why this matters<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s <\/strong><strong>another all-clear signal for the business community.<\/strong> Corporate borrowing for any purpose other than short-term opex spending has been effectively frozen for nearly two years with interest rates hovering near 30%. Despite successive cuts, rates remain 1.25% above their pre-EGP float level in March of last year. \u201cWhat was done in a single day in 2024 took an entire year to unwind,\u201d Genena said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Even after this cut, real interest rates in Egypt are still among the highest in the <\/strong><strong>world<\/strong>, Genena said. Current real interest rates are between 8-9%, which is historically high for Egypt and \u201cnot the norm globally or in stable economies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The year ahead should see the central bank putting its rate-cutting cycle up a gear<\/strong>, with Genena forecasting another 800 bps worth of cuts in 2026. This would bring real interest rates to 1-2%, \u201cbalancing growth and price stability,\u201d Genena said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Eating away at rates will also eat away at the country\u2019s debt servicing burden<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The move is a significant W for the Finance Ministry.<\/strong> The cut is a \u201cgift\u201d to the treasury, with interest payments recently consuming over 100% of total government revenues in the first four months of the fiscal year, EG Bank Board Member Mohamed Abdel Aal tells us. Every 100 bps drop in rates saves the Finance Ministry some EGP 70-80 mn in annual debt-servicing costs, which can then be shifted toward social spending or other priorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">Looking ahead<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The question for 2026 is no longer if the CBE will cut, but how fast.<\/strong> If the central bank is to hit its ambitious inflation target of 7% (\u00b12%) by 4Q 2026, it will have to strike a delicate balance between tackling inflation and bringing rates down. The central bank has yet to release its MPC meeting calendar for 2026.
