The exact size of TSFE\u2019s stake is still under negotiation. Representatives for RMBV declined to comment on the matter when we reached out to them. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>RNAFIII is targeting at least USD 400 mn in total fundraising<\/strong>, with plans to deploy USD 200-240 mn in Egypt, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asharqbusiness.com\/economics\/100971\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1%D9%8A-%D9%8A%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%A7%D9%87%D9%85%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%82-%D8%B4%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%84-%D8%A3%D9%81%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%82%D9%8A%D8%A7-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AB%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AB\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a> reports, citing two government sources. The fund will focus on education, healthcare, financial services, and consumer industries. climate <\/strong><strong>challenge<\/strong>, pumping out some 2.6 bn tons of carbon dioxide a year and accounting for 7% of global energy-related emissions, according to the International Energy Agency\u2019s (IEA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2025\/10\/312.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Iron and Steel Technology Roadmap (pdf)<\/a>. To meet the IEA\u2019s net zero targets by 2050, the sector as a whole needs to reduce emissions 25% by 2030 and 91% by 2050 from a 2022 baseline. However, the sector is notoriously energy-intensive, with no easy routes to greener production lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">(<strong>Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links <\/strong>to our background as well as external sources.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s iron and steel industry, in particular, will come under increased focus with the <\/strong><strong>launch of the <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/63f69456-ee23-4b0d-ab40-cf8156033b69\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)<\/a><\/strong><strong> at the start of next year<\/strong>, with the sector\u2019s exports to the EU \u2014 reaching USD 862.9 mn in 2024, according to UN Comtrade data \u2014 potentially set for a major disruption. Steel and iron exports, along with fertilizers, cement, and aluminum, heading to the EU will have a carbon mission tax imposed on them starting 1 January, followed by a similar program for exports to the UK at the start of 2027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But first, what exactly is the CBAM? <\/strong>Often referred to as the carbon border tax, the CBAM is a carbon emission tax imposed on goods that are imported into the EU. It is designed to put a \u201cfair price\u201d on emissions from the production of carbon-intensive goods that are imported into EU member countries and aims to \u201cencourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries,\u201d according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU Commission<\/a>. Cheap renewables and green hydrogen, entrenched direct reduced iron capacity, and central geography can help the region not just adjust to the incoming CBAM, but establish a promising new industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Green steel and iron isn\u2019t an alien concept to Egypt<\/strong>, with companies like Jindal Steel and Power <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/dd16c49e-de11-4147-9a9f-743ce3d5fad3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">announcing their interest<\/a> in setting up complexes fueled by renewables like green hydrogen, often with exports in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And the Carboun Institute is <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f45da26e-316e-4b19-8d7f-365e391d92f7\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">not the first<\/a><\/strong><strong> to suggest that the region is a good candidate <\/strong><strong>for a green iron and steel industry.<\/strong> The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ieefa.org\/articles\/mena-poised-become-leading-green-iron-and-steel-hub\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis<\/a> highlighted in a 2023 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/11\/993.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> our abundant solar resources and an already established iron market that can be gradually transitioned to clean energy. The Institute also argued that focusing on exporting green iron and steel makes more financial sense than the en vogue push to export green hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>One reason why the steel and iron industry makes up around a quarter of global industrial <\/strong><strong>emissions is its reliance on coal<\/strong>, but this is also what could give the region\u2019s green steel and iron industry an edge. The region accounts for just 3.6% of global crude steel output, but the direct reduced iron market \u2014 known as DRI \u2014 produced 44% of the world\u2019s DRI last year, accounting for some 62.5 mn tons, according to the Carboun Institute. Egypt leads the region in DRI capacity, behind only Iran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Unlike other methods, DRI technology normally uses natural gas as its feedstock<\/strong>, which is cleaner than more traditional methods of producing iron using coal. Natural gas still pollutes, but what DRI technology offers Egypt and the region is an easy route to replace natural gas with green hydrogen as its feedstock, opening the door to green steel. Competitors in Europe, China, and elsewhere, on the other hand, have a longer road to creating a green industry, as they have to create new plants to incorporate green hydrogen as an input.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region\u2019s renewables potential also gives the region an edge<\/strong>, opening the door up to cheaper green hydrogen production and, in turn, a more competitive green steel and iron industry, according to the report. The region receives 22-26% of the world\u2019s solar energy, and many areas \u2014 including the Gulf of Suez \u2014 are perfect sites for wind projects. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>As proof of concept, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Al Shuaibah solar complex boasts the world\u2019s <\/strong><strong>cheapest solar-produced electricity at just USD 0.0104\/kWh in 2025. <\/strong>The Kingdom\u2019s Al Ghat wind farm also boasts the world\u2019s cheapest wind power at USD 0.0156\/kWh. Considering that 50% of green hydrogen costs stem from the cost of renewables, cheaper renewables can mean significantly cheaper green hydrogen for the green steel and iron industry. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region \u2014 and Egypt, in particular, thanks to the Suez Canal \u2014 is also in a prime <\/strong><strong>position to give it a major logistical edge<\/strong>, with ports in the region able to reach Asia or Europe in a much quicker time than suppliers further afield. Cutting down freight times also helps trim fuel consumption and improves warehousing strains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Shorter routes to markets also reduce emissions<\/strong>, which is taken into account by carbon tariffs that factor in the emissions by the time the product lands at the intended market.
