Don\u2019t hold your breath, folks, but it\u2019s quiet out there: We lead today\u2019s brisk issue with comments from Trump regarding the US\u2019 involvement in resolving the GERD dispute, investors\u2019 changing appetite for local debt, and Polaris Parks\u2019 latest venture.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt5\"><\/a> <strong>BUT FIRST- Senior government officials and others in our community are heading <\/strong><strong>to London <\/strong><strong>for Egypt Day at the London Stock Exchange<\/strong>, an event put together by the good folks at the Finance Ministry. Officials from the Central Bank of Egypt, Ministry of Investment, Financial Regulatory Authority, and the EGX are also flying in for the gathering, which takes place tomorrow. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Officials are out to drum-up fresh investor interest<\/strong>, and they\u2019ve got a series of good-news data points to highlight, including a growing pipeline of offerings on the EGX, strong appetite for Egyptian debt, and a drumbeat of investment from multinationals and other international players. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Investors were particularly interested in our report yesterday that Banque du Caire could <\/strong><strong>be on deck to offer shares <\/strong>as part of a \u201cfourth wave\u201d of privatization that officials think could bring in some USD 5-6 bn. Military-owned companies including Safi and Wataneya are also set to go public.. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Taking BdC public could breathe new life into the EGX. <\/strong>Bonyan is already proving that investors are willing to return to the EGX, confident that Hassan Abdalla\u2019s FX regime is enduringly flexible. Investor interest would be off-the-charts if BdC were to include a substantial offering of global depositary receipts in the transaction. <strong>Banque du Caire is a rock-solid national institution with a great strategy<\/strong> and a spotless balance sheet after years of cleanup work by management, the board, and the central bank. And few execs in the country have the street cred with global investors that CEO Hussein Abaza has built up over decades. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>An outline of the state\u2019s asset monetization program and color on the IPO pipeline are <\/strong><strong>among officials\u2019 key talking in London<\/strong> alongside the usual updates on the Madbouly government\u2019s basket of fiscal, monetary, and structural reforms. They\u2019re also keen to drum up FDI and \u201cdeepen market liquidity,\u201d we\u2019re told. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOUND SMART- Uh, Enterprise? What\u2019s a \u201cglobal depositary receipt\u201d?<\/strong> A GDR trading on the LSE is a way for foreign investors to buy into an underlying Egyptian equity without going through the EGX. Issued by a bank and traded on the LSE in this case, GDRs let investors with London-only mandates pick up exposure to foreign names \u2014 no extra compliance burden, no local hurdles. And if you\u2019re a foreign issuer, it\u2019s a way of getting more foreign institutional investors into your shareholder registry without going through a full international IPO.<\/p><p class=\"tag-border-left\">DEBT WATCH- <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a> <strong>Speaking of foreign investors: <\/strong><strong>Appetite for <\/strong><strong>loc<\/strong><strong>al debt is changing.<\/strong> Global investors are now favoring longer-term debt instruments over short-term options in our local debt market. The shift comes as Egypt\u2019s attractive interest rates continue to stand out compared to other emerging markets, a senior government source told EnterpriseAM yesterday.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We have the CBE\u2019s latest decision to thank: <\/strong>The Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17ae7656-42a3-4c38-8b5a-476d90cdb229\/egypt-holds-interest-rates-steady\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17ae7656-42a3-4c38-8b5a-476d90cdb229\/egypt-holds-interest-rates-steady\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">decision<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/17ae7656-42a3-4c38-8b5a-476d90cdb229\/egypt-holds-interest-rates-steady\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> last week to keep interest rates unchanged \u201csignificantly boosted foreign investors\u2019 appetite,\u201d the source added. The CBE\u2019s move marked a halt in the Monetary Policy Committee\u2019s easing cycle, after it cut rates by 225 bps in April and 100 bps in May. The overnight deposit rate now stands at 24.00%, the overnight lending rate at 25.00%, and the main operation and disc. rates at 24.50%. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The CBE appears to know that it has a captive audience, so don\u2019t expect it to be <\/strong><strong>super-generous. <\/strong>Foreign investors demanded elevated yields ranging between 30.7% and 32% across different maturities, prompting the CBE to scale back its acceptance of bids at auctions held between Thursday and Sunday. Most accepted bids came from local banks, which were after lower rates of 25-27.9%, our source noted. Investors bid for some EGP 341 bn worth of debt, while the CBE accepted only EGP 165 bn worth, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/auctions\/egp-t-bills\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the central bank.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>WHY DOES IT MATTER? A preference for longer-dated debt is a welcome sign of investor <\/strong><strong>confidence<\/strong>, showing they think we\u2019re good for the debt when repayment time comes. And the CBE is right to send a signal that a bit north of 30% is a bit much. Investors have seen in recent months that the interbank market for FX is running smoothly. Critically, folks who wanted out of Egypt during a handful of recent Trump-fuelled global risk-offs have been easily able to get their greenbacks and get out of Cairo. Under the decision that will soon be announced in the Official Gazette, the 30 plants will collect and process the oil before sending everything off for conversion into SAF.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">(<strong>Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links <\/strong>to our background as well as external sources.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The collection network will feed a planned USD 530 mn SAF production complex in <\/strong><strong>Alexandria<\/strong>, which has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8fd53fdc-ed59-4219-9f14-e3ab535b0640\/oil-ministry-gets-the-ball-rolling-on-usd-530-mn-sustainable-aviation-fuel-project\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">been set up by the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Company<\/a>, which was set up by the Oil Ministry in November of last year. Five ministries are jointly overseeing the project and developing incentives and investment options, according to our source. Construction and financing arrangements are currently underway through several international entities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The launch of locally made SAF is now pencilled in for 2028<\/strong>, with a targeted 160k liters a year under the project\u2019s first phase, according to our source. The government had initially been targeting a 2025 launch <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c849562a-fe0a-4834-bd58-a70afd76a754\/egypt-could-start-producing-sustainable-aviation-fuel-in-2025\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">as recently as last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>SAF is a biofuel used to power aircraft that is made from non-petroleum feedstock, such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/22e81fef-6d69-4cf8-9e3e-1ab2681067ac\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">waste cooking oil<\/a>, animal fat, and non-food crops. It can reduce carbon emissions by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/programs\/environment\/sustainable-aviation-fuels\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 80%<\/a> compared to traditional jet fuel, according to International Air Transport Association estimates. Due to its chemical composition being incredibly similar to traditional aviation fuel, SAF can be mixed in ratios currently reaching up to 50% in commercial use, with 100% SAF-fueled planes being the end goal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt uses plenty of cooking oil, much of which can be recycled.<\/strong> Out of the 2.5 mn tons of cooking oil used by Egyptians every year, some 1 mn tons of this can be collected, our source told us. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.curresweb.com\/csi\/csi\/2020\/csi.2020.9.4.58.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Estimates<\/a> from a 2020 paper by the National Research Center, which align with figures from our source, said that some 90% of the 2.5 mn tons is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alfanar.org\/delta-oil\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alfanar.org\/delta-oil\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">thrown down the drain<\/a>. On top of missing out on recycling the used oil, throwing oil down the drain also causes serious sewer blockages, spiraling maintenance bills for the government, and even social discontent, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/am-pdf\/10.1111\/anti.12562\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/am-pdf\/10.1111\/anti.12562\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">according to some<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But the real challenge is in collection. <\/strong>Most Egyptians throw their used cooking oil down the drain, so getting enough people to agree to bottle up their used oil and to efficiently collect it is no easy task. The mostly informal used oil collection industry\u2019s margins are tiny, and we\u2019re yet to hear what offtake price the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production Company will offer and if it will be more or less than what it is currently exported for.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This should help us play our part in reaching the International Civil Aviation <\/strong><strong>Organization\u2019s goal to reduce CO2 international flight emissions by 5% by 2030<\/strong>, as laid out in its Global Aspirational Goal for the decade. But reaching this is only the first step in some major changes to come for the jet fuel industry, with the UN agency pencilling a net-zero target for the entire aviation sector by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>EgyptAir\u2019s SAF targets will also drive demand<\/strong>, with the national flag carrier already aiming to have SAF represent a 2% share in its fuel mix this year, which can currently only be achieved through imports. Fast forward to 2030, and EgyptAir is looking to increase that further to 6%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But demand for Egyptian-made SAF may also come from overseas<\/strong>, as the EU\u2019s ReFuelEU aggressively pushes for 2% by 2025, 6% by 2030, 20% by 2025, 42% by 2045, and 70% by 2050 for jet fuel supplied at EU airports.
