The bank also kept its growth forecast for the next fiscal year starting next month penciled in at 4.2% y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The decision to keep<\/strong><strong> forecasts<\/strong><strong> stable<\/strong><strong> gives us an insight into the impact of Trump\u2019s refueling <\/strong><strong>of the trade war with his April 2 \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariff announcement.<\/strong> Egypt appears to have fared tariff uncertainty much better than some had feared and much better than some of our regional peers \u2014 some of which have also struggled with falling oil prices. Growth forecasts for the current year are 0.3 percentage points above the bank\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/2181161f-662e-4ff5-b211-048e6761384f\/imf,-world-bank-cut-egypt'\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-trade war January forecast<\/a>, while its forecast for the coming fiscal year has remained steady.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We also got the World Bank\u2019s first gro<\/strong><strong>wth forecast for FY 2026-2027<\/strong>, which sees the economy accelerating again at a 4.6% y-o-y clip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The World <\/strong><strong>Bank\u2019s forecasts are more pessimisic than the Madbouly government\u2019s <\/strong><strong>predictions<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34ccc1e0-b104-4cf1-a9f7-903d3403cd70\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">which see<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34ccc1e0-b104-4cf1-a9f7-903d3403cd70\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">GDP growth coming<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34ccc1e0-b104-4cf1-a9f7-903d3403cd70\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34ccc1e0-b104-4cf1-a9f7-903d3403cd70\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">at a 4.0% y-o-y clip<\/a> in FY 2024-2025, before rising to 4.5% in FY 2025-2026 and further to 5.0% in FY 2026-2027. Fitch Solutions\u2019 research unit BMI is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9ffe8c1c-c0b4-4c24-96f0-74fbeb9d812c\/fitch-trims-our-growth-outlook-for-fy-2025-26\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">also more optimistic<\/a>, along with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7b7f68cd-d32b-440a-b117-5b9b1a97b5fe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">IMF<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5e5c9dcc-4815-4d67-8c4a-fa86e71cbc29\/ebrd-further-trims-egypt%25e2%2580%2599s-2025,-2026-growth-forecast\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EBRD<\/a>, while S&amp;P Global Ratings is less optimistic than the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The report attributes the three consecutive annual upticks in growth to \u201cstronger private <\/strong><strong>consumption, higher private investment<\/strong> \u2014 spurred by the implementation of the investment deal with the United Arab Emirates and anticipated monetary easing \u2014 and a gradual rebound in manufacturing activity.\u201d Macroeconomic stabilization, calming of political tensions, and tourism sector recovery were also highlighted as reasons why the bank expects growth to continue climbing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s current account deficit is also expected to narrow in FY 2025-2026<\/strong>, driven by a combination of lower oil and natural gas prices, strong remittances, and a \u201cvibrant tourism sector,\u201d the bank suggests. The non-oil trade deficit is also expected to shrink as \u201cthe effects of clearing import backlogs from FY 2024-2025 subside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But despite a broadly optimistic picture, fiscal deficits in oil importers like Egypt <\/strong><strong>are projected to widen in 2025<\/strong>, which the bank partly attributes to \u201cEgypt\u2019s higher interest payments and decline in non-tax revenues\u201d after a significant one-time increase from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b0b97fcf-95b0-4d39-86ae-0a4989221520\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ras El Hekma agreement<\/a> with the UAE. Deficits are expected to decline slightly in 2026, however, as \u201cfiscal consolidation proceeds in Egypt in FY 2025-2026, by implementing a reduction in energy subsidies and enhancing tax revenue mobilization efforts.\u201d Persistent inflation is also expected to keep poverty levels \u201celevated,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region as a whole, ho<\/strong><strong>wever, has not fared trade tensions and a slump in oil prices as <\/strong><strong>well as Egypt<\/strong>, with the World Bank\u2019s latest forecasts for the Middle East and North Africa coming in at 2.7% y-o-y for the current fiscal year. Despite a marginal 0.1 percentage point upgrade from its April projection on the back of \u201can expansion of oil activity in oil exporters,\u201d forecasts are still 0.7 percentage points below the World Bank\u2019s pre-trade war January forecast and a whole 1.5 percentage points below the bank\u2019s 2025 forecast before that.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- <\/strong><strong>conflicts:<\/strong> The World Bank expects GDP growth to weaken to 2.3% in 2025 on a global level, in what would mark the slowest rate of growth in almost 17 years, without counting outright global recessions, the bank wrote in its latest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2025\/6\/544.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Economic Prospects report (pdf)<\/a>. The forecast for 2025 represents a drop of 0.4 percentage points from the bank\u2019s previous forecast in January, while its forecast of 2.4% growth in 2026 is 0.3 percentage points lower than the bank\u2019s prediction at the start of the year.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The rationale: <\/strong>The bank sees global growth deteriorating on the back of a \u201csubstantial rise in trade barriers and the pervasive effects of an uncertain global policy environment,\u201d with the outlook largely depending on how trade policy evolves globally. \u201cGrowth could turn out to be lower if trade restrictions escalate or if policy uncertainty persists, which could also result in a build-up of financial stress,\u201d the report reads. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The risks don\u2019t end there:<\/strong> Other risks to growth include \u201cadverse global spillovers, worsening conflicts, and extreme weather events,\u201d as well as the possibility of lower-than-expected growth in major economies. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Some hope?<\/strong> However, the outlook could improve should major economies sign \u201clasting agreements that address trade tensions,\u201d the bank said.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^This is already happening: The US and China <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/ea217a64-6b69-4caa-a311-77a5090b06c3\/dfm-introduces-new-rules-for-margin-trading-%2B-adgm-expects-continued-growth-in-registered-firms\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">have finally reached a trade agreement<\/a> that could end a long and heated tit-for-tat that started with the US\u2019 imposition of a 145% tariff on Chinese imports, though few details have emerged and the final agreement still requires sign-offs from the countries\u2019 leaders. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The US is now expected to see its GDP growth slow to 1.4% in 2025,<\/strong> before seeing a slight uptick to 1.6% in 2026. Speaking to us this week is Mostafa Habaib (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mostafa-habib-3504531aa\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>), co-founder of VeryNile. Edited excerpts from our conversation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>My name is Mostafa Habib, I\u2019m 34. <\/strong>I graduated with a degree in architectural engineering. I used to work in marketing in the past, but I always had a dream to work in development. My grandmother and aunt used to work as pediatricians, so I always felt the need to help children too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>At some point<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong><strong> I felt like I wanted to stop jumping from one marketing firm to anothe<\/strong><strong>r<\/strong> and decided to take a step towards my dream. I packed and travelled to Aswan, where I lived for two or three months. There, I attempted to build a community school on Heisa Island near the Philae Temple. It was a good trial, but it failed. I wasn\u2019t ready for it yet, but I ended up connecting with a development community and observing their work. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I then came back to Cairo<\/strong>, and I thought of how people are able to swim in the Nile in Aswan, but not in Cairo. I coincidentally met with two of my friends who have their own social enterprise \u2014 Bassita \u2014 that used to help NGOs and initiatives raise funds through clickfunding. I joined them, and we started building VeryNile in 2018. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We didn\u2019t have direct funding when we first started <\/strong>\u2014 no one trusted our project. People were skeptical. There wasn\u2019t enough awareness at the time in Egypt about environmental initiatives and cleaning. But, volunteering was a big trend, and this was one of the things we leveraged at the beginning. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We continued working on Bassi<\/strong><strong>ta<\/strong><strong> while looking for someone <\/strong><strong>who<\/strong><strong> believed in our idea. <\/strong>We talked to private and public sector players with no luck. That\u2019s until I made a Facebook post introducing the idea of VeryNile and seeking contacts to fund the project. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We ended up reaching people at the UN\u2019s International Organization for Migration<\/strong>, which expressed their interest and wanted to help. The organization provided us with financial support. We also partnered with Greenish, an environmental solutions provider that works on raising awareness about environmental solutions and providing the support and knowledge needed to help entrepreneurs launch their own green startups.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I think the turning point was the first event we held in December 2018<\/strong>, which was quite successful. Over 250 volunteers participated in the event and helped us collect 1.5 tons of waste in three hours. The event received widespread media coverage, and we ended up honored by the environment and irrigation ministries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We collected over 100 tons of waste from the Nile during our first four years of <\/strong><strong>operations. <\/strong>We have continued our cleanups, not only during events, but alongside fishermen and women who live on islands in Cairo and Assiut. We made more than 450 partnerships with the private sector, including partnerships with UN agencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The lotus flower started to flourish again on Qursaya island, where we used to work all <\/strong><strong>the time <\/strong>\u2014 and that felt like the right time to end my journey with VeryNile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Social development is very close to my heart. <\/strong>After exiting VeryNile, I decided that I wanted to work with orphanages. I\u2019ve always volunteered in orphanages and always had my objections about some things that would happen there, so I decided to change that. I wrote a proposal to the Social Solidarity Ministry detailing my concerns, after which I was asked to join the ministry and handle corporate social responsibility and partnerships with the private sector, and so I did. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s been two years since I started working with the ministry, and I\u2019m very grateful. <\/strong>I get to learn about the different numbers and statistics behind every area I want to work in, including the number of orphanages and elderly homes in the country, individuals with disabilities, and more. I\u2019m currently in the learning phase. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The most popular causes at the moment are financial inclusion, economic empowerment, <\/strong><strong>women empowerment, and early-childhood empowerment. <\/strong>This last one includes working with children starting at a young age, working with nurseries, focusing on educational inclusion, and shedding light on positive parenting \u2014 which is one of the biggest problems in the world, not just in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I\u2019m currently working on a project targeting women who crochet. <\/strong>A lot of women work in crochet, but no one is buying their products. We\u2019re offering them vocational training to develop soft skills on how to market their product, manage their business, and more. We\u2019re also working on a project targeting jasmine flower collectors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The best thing about working in development is that one thing leads to another. <\/strong>Even a small effort often has a big impact on the community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>My morning routine usually starts with coffee.<\/strong> I have recently gotten into the habit of reading self-help books in the morning; I\u2019m currently reading <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/129603.You_Can_Heal_Your_Life\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">You Can Heal Your Life<\/a> by Louise L. Hay. After a little bit of reading, I make affirmations, pray, and check up on my sister and her baby. Then, the day unfolds depending on my schedule. I try my best to make some time for my family, and at night I enjoy watching sports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s important for me to always feel like my job has a purpose. <\/strong>Maybe I\u2019m not always well-paid, but at least I feel satisfied with what I do. Even outside of work, I always like to give back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I want to have my own thing soon, after learning everything I can from the ministry. <\/strong>I want to open a school for autistic children in Egypt. I also wish to open a consultancy agency that acts as a bridge between the private sector, the development sector, NGOs, and small businesses. On a personal level, I want to achieve those goals, buy a home in Aswan, and then move there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We have the financial resources in Egyp<\/strong><strong>t<\/strong>, but those who have the money don\u2019t know where and how to deploy it into development initiatives, and development initiatives
