September<\/a>, according to figures from the Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC) seen by EnterpriseAM. This marks a modest rebound in monthly vehicle sales, breaking a two-month streak of declines following four months of growth between April and July. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember:<\/strong> The vehicle market witnessed a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0a7601c5-d341-4b7d-8c2e-f3928855bbce\/auto-sales-fall-43%2525-m-o-m-in-march-as-customers-wait-for-further-price-reductions\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">43% m-o-m drop in March<\/a>, with sales plummeting to just 4.2k vehicles \u2014 the lowest number of auto sales we\u2019ve seen since we started keeping track in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Growth in truck sales drove the increase: <\/strong>Passenger car sales registered a 2.3% m-o-m decline to 7.4k vehicles, but a 20.3% m-o-m increase in truck sales to 1.4k units and a 4.5% m-o-m increase in bus sales to 760 pushed the overall figure up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On a yearly basis: <\/strong>October\u2019s total auto sales were up 7.3% from the same time last year, driven by a 45.3 y-o-y increase in truck sales and a 6.6% y-o-y increase in passenger car sales. In the same period, bus sales fell 24.9% y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The data paints an incomplete picture:<\/strong> AMIC figures come from member distributors, covering most\u2014but not all\u2014industry players. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The local auto market could be in store for some drastic changes in the future, however<\/strong>, as it seems that every couple of days there\u2019s a new agreement to localize auto production and increase supply. What does the process entail, in simple terms?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Helmy Abouleish: Organic and biodynamic agriculture is a process of building and investing in living <\/strong>soil \u2014 soil made from scratch using organic matter and compost \u2014 as a base upon which you can eventually start having plants, animals, people, and then a larger community over time. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>My father started this process 47 years ago, at a time when there was no model for <\/strong><strong>organic or biodynamic farming in the desert anywhere in the world.<\/strong> Beyond developing the concept, there was another essential part of our business that took shape during this time \u2014 making organic agriculture competitive through what we call the economy of love. We\u2019re not just concerned with the farming methods and agriculture, but with the whole management of the supply chain from farmer to consumer \u2014 that everyone has a fair share of the added value and living wages, and that everyone involved in the supply chain can develop their potential in the process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We\u2019ve managed to become market leaders in segments where we compete with global<\/strong> <strong>firms using this approach<\/strong>, which we think demonstrates that the economy of love doesn\u2019t just sound nice \u2014 it\u2019s also a very competitive model.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Back in 2019, we asked ourselves how we could make organic and biodynamic farming<\/strong> <strong>the norm in Egypt<\/strong>, which would be better for the climate, for biodiversity, for water, food, and health. The reason it hasn't happened is because it\u2019s more expensive, so we decided to develop models for the 7 mn farmers along the Nile and in the desert to show them how our methods for organic and biodynamic desert land reclamation can minimize water consumption, maximize yields, and have the least impactful carbon footprint \u2014 all while providing a base for community development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: In 2020, SEKEM launched the Greening the Desert Project \u2014 what has been<\/strong> <strong>accomplished so far, and what still needs to be done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>HA: The Bahariya Oasis has an area of 50k hectares, with around 40k people living there.<\/strong> We have a goal of supporting the 11k farmers in the oasis transition from conventional agriculture to organic and biodynamic agriculture by 2027. We\u2019ve reached about 1.7k farmers \u2014 or 17% \u2014 so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The transition from conventional to organic farming will be wholly funded using carbon<\/strong> <strong>credits.<\/strong> We pay the farmers using carbon credits, and we place a condition that they won\u2019t sell the organically produced products at a premium. We also help them switch from diesel generators to renewable energy sources. This process could help offset 14% of Egypt\u2019s overall emissions, provided that all 7 mn farmers in Egypt follow this method. Farming is a big part of the problem for Egypt\u2019s emissions, but it can also be a big part of the solution. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: How has the government facilitated the project? Has it offered any incentives for<\/strong> <strong>SEKEM?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>HA: Since our project\u2019s launch during COP27, the government has made decisions that<\/strong> <strong>have greatly supported our project.<\/strong> In particular, the government\u2019s passage of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bf6f83bf-cf94-4686-a908-2e5c27b3c511\/egypt-launches-africa%E2%80%99s-first-carbon-market\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">voluntary carbon market law<\/a> and establishment of a full accreditation program for carbon credits on the EGX through the Financial Regulatory Authority has bolstered our economy of love approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: Are there more reclamation projects outside the Bahariya Oasis in the pipeline?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>HA: Outside of the Bahriya Oasis project, we aim to work with 40k farmers by December<\/strong> <strong>2025 and 250k farmers all over Egypt by 2028.<\/strong> We want to reach as many people as possible to enact systemic change. It\u2019s all about working with the farmers in these communities and shifting their farming methods, but it\u2019s also about human development. The questions we care about are how we\u2019re improving the livelihoods of the farmers, their potential, whether their kids are going to school or not, how their health is improving, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We currently have 15k farmers involved in our project <\/strong>\u2014 and for them, the most valuable part for them is feeling seen, honored, and respected. They see a future for their kids and they are part of a community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: Is SEKEM\u2019s work limited to Egypt, or are there ongoing projects abroad?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>HA: Besides Egypt, we are operating in India, Tanzania, Kenya, and Brazil, and will start <\/strong><strong>working in Morocco.<\/strong> We believe that the concept can be applied in countries around the world, and we\u2019re supporting whoever\u2019s interested in applying it. We have no commercial interest, because we believe that every single country should apply this model \u2014 or something like it \u2014 to their respective agricultural systems. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We\u2019re working with 250k farmers across three different cooperatives in India,<\/strong> and in Tanzania with 40k farmers through one cooperative, all with the goal of helping farmers around the world to make this transition based on ecosystem service payments \u2014 which are currently limited to carbon credits, but we hope will eventually include biodiversity credits, water credits, and others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: In a water scarce country like Egypt, what kind of challenges do you face in water <\/strong><strong>recycling and sub-surface irrigation methods?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We can improve our water consumption, as well as our food security and self-sufficiency <\/strong><strong>by changing our agriculture system<\/strong>, introducing new tech, and having different varieties of the crops we farm. Optimizing water consumption can be done through sub-surface irrigation, or smart irrigation tech that can reduce 15-20% of water consumption \u2014 but utilizing organic and biodynamic farming practices and having living soils can reduce it by 20-40%, because the water-holding capacity of the soil will improve. Growing drought-resistant crops is another strategy to help circumvent the issues related to Egypt\u2019s water shortage and to help address them as well. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>E: Does SEKEM partner with the private sector on any of its projects? What would <\/strong><strong>successful private sector partnerships look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>HA: We cooperate with many Egyptian firms along the supply chain,<\/strong> whether they\u2019re supplying us with packaging material or raw materials, and our products are present in 55k supermarkets and 35k pharmacies across the country. We\u2019re trying to raise awareness among our partners and with other firms, and push the idea that they should embrace models akin to what we\u2019re trying to do and introduce more sustainable development practices. Companies are starting to respond to this, and offsetting through carbon credits has helped speed the process along \u2014 especially for newer firms. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We also help aid companies\u2019 transitions toward more sustainable business models <\/strong><strong>through our <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/carbonfootprintcenter.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbon Footprint Center<\/a><\/strong><strong> at Heliopolis University,<\/strong>
