The anticipated milestone follows steady declines in the EGP \u2014 as has been the case for many other world currencies \u2014 against a strengthening post-election greenback that is up more than 2% since the election on the Bloomberg Spot Dollar Index.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Some are pointing to the at least USD 500 mn worth of interbank USD transactions recorded Thursday as one of the reasons behind the currency\u2019s depreciation,<\/strong> up from between USD 100-150 mn in previous days, as demand for the greenback rose on the back of the exit of foreign investors from investments in government debt, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alarabiya.net\/aswaq\/exclusive\/2024\/12\/05\/%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%B9%D8%B1%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%86%D8%B5%D9%81-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%85%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A8%D9%86%D9%83-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%85\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Arabiya<\/a> reports, citing unnamed banking sources. The move was expected, according to the outlet\u2019s sources, who told it that foreign investors are cashing in on their investments before the end of year and are expected to be back with an appetite for government debt in the first two months of next year.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>EFG Hermes\u2019 Mohamed Abu Basha seems to agree, <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-05\/egypt-pound-weakens-past-50-a-dollar-for-first-time-since-march\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">telling Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong><strong> that \u201cwe attribute the weakness mostly to <\/strong><strong>seasonality.\u201d <\/strong>Abu Basha explained that \u201cit\u2019s end of the year, where the bias is always for some FX weakness as traders and economic agents settle some positions, in addition to a global backdrop of USD strength,\u201d he said. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The government has already been trying to calm nerves and provide context<\/strong>, with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ba4c4688-610a-48b0-8464-f3517705e51b\/common-arab-electricity-market-incoming%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">telling reporters at a recent presser<\/a> that \u201cit\u2019s natural for this type of movement to occur, so we shouldn\u2019t worry about temporary increases in the USD.\u201d While reaffirming the country\u2019s commitment to keeping a flexible exchange rate \u2014 in no small part a nod to the IMF and other international backers who will be closely watching the government to see how they will manage the situation \u2014 the prime minister explained that \u201cthe EGP is part of an existing global system, so it is natural for this type of movement to occur\u201d and added that the EGP is likely to continue fluctuating within a 5% range in the near term.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On the topic of government debt, the central bank managed to sell only 6.2% of its target<\/strong><strong> for year-long EGP-denominated bills and 18.0% of its six-month bills <\/strong>as investors demanded higher interest rates during the bank\u2019s most recent auction on Thursday.
