The One on One continues today and tomorrow.<\/p><p><strong>What other markets are in favor? <\/strong>46% of respondents tipped Egypt as the best likely performer in MENA and FM this year, followed by the UAE at 16% and Pakistan at 13%. Although emerging markets outperformed MENA markets in 2016, <strong>60% of respondents said they expect MENA to outperform global emerging market this year. <\/strong>Some 32% of respondents think healthcare stocks will perform best this year, followed by banks (27%) and consumer plays (22%).<\/p><p><strong>If you invest or do business in MENA or frontier markets, you\u2019ll want to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/EFG-Consensus-2017.pdf\"><strong>have a look at the chart-heavy survey results (pdf) <\/strong>and the accompanying note<\/a> from the EFG Hermes Research team. Questions cover everything from key risk factors to views on oil prices, expectations of key markets, and some inside baseball stuff near and dear to our hearts\u2014 including whether passive funds will continue to effectively take AUM from actively managed funds and whether respondents are willing to pay for research as the industry braces for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/professional\/mifid-ii\/\">MiFID II<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Also at the One on One yesterday:<\/strong> Investment and International Cooperation Minister <strong>Sahar Nasr<\/strong> and Emaar Properties boss (and prolific MENA and EM investor) <strong>Mohamed Alabbar<\/strong> took to the stage to talk about change. We\u2019ll have full coverage of their remarks later this week.<\/p><p><strong>It was a big day for: EFG Hermes\u2026 <\/strong>Aside from this year\u2019s gathering being the largest One on One yet, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efghermes.com\/en\/News\/Pages\/Corporate-News-Details.aspx?wurl=\/en\/News&amp;lid=64f7e8df-e76b-42cf-9180-30f24b4b9ed1&amp;vid=9310a3fc-11e6-4145-927d-c49e5a218ddf&amp;iid=355\">marked the first conference where non-GCC frontier companies turned out in force<\/a>. EFG Hermes Group CEO <strong>Karim Awad<\/strong> told attendees yesterday that, \u201cMirroring our geographical expansion ambitions, this year our flagship One on One conference sees a marked increase in market representation with companies from 19 countries spanning the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Kenya, among many others.\u201d <strong>Half of the almost two dozen participating FM companies are from Pakistan<\/strong>, which will be upgraded to MSCI Emerging Market status in May. Pakistani companies attending this week are expected to account for c.44% of the MSCI Pakistan Index when it launches. That comes just ahead of the expected closure of EFG Hermes acquisition of Pakistan\u2019s IFSL.<\/p><p><strong>\u2026marking its transformation into the premier frontier markets finance house<\/strong>, structured along three business lines: The investment bank; a non-bank financing arm that includes leasing and microfinance (and, according to Awad, \u201csoon consumer finance in Egypt); and a \u201cmerchant bank that manages our liquid balance sheet to enhance the Group\u2019s future growth and return on equity,\u201d Awad noted.<\/p><p><strong>EFG Hermes also launched small and mid-cap coverage<\/strong> of some of the best stocks which it feels has gone unnoticed for too long, bringing their total coverage to 177 companies in the region.<\/p><p><strong>It was also a big day for: Mohamed Ebeid and Karim Moussa<\/strong>, longstanding friends of Enterprise. EFG Hermes Group Chief Executive Officer Karim Awad noted that both men have been named co-CEOs of the investment bank at EFG Hermes, with Ebeid (the longtime co-head of brokerage) heading up the sell side, including brokerage, investment banking and research. Moussa, until his appointment the head of private equity at EFG, will be Ebeid\u2019s counterpart on the buy side, building a new platform based on the firm\u2019s private equity and asset management divisions. <strong>Mohamed El Wakeel<\/strong>, meanwhile, will head all back-office operations as chief operating officer, Awad noted in remarks yesterday, and <strong>Ahmed Waly <\/strong>becomes the sole head of brokerage.<\/p><p>Separately, Moussa <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/efg-hermes-uk-renewables-idUKKBN16D1N7\">announced<\/a> that EFG Hermes\u2019 renewable energy platform <strong>Vortex plans to close its GBP 470 mn acquisition<\/strong> of 24 solar parks from TerraForm power in May or June.<\/p><p><strong>Away from Dubai, Trump\u2019s travel ban lite:<\/strong> US President Donald Trump is reissuing his travel ban executive order with \u201csignificant concessions\u201d from his prior directive, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2017\/03\/trump-releases-new-travel-ban-executive-order-235720\">Politico<\/a> writes. The new directive exempts existing visa holders from travel limits and removes Iraq from the original list of barred countries. \u201cThe new order will put a 90-day hold on issuance of visas to citizens of six countries: Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. It also stops refugee admissions worldwide for 120 days.\u201d The rollout of this directive could be less chaotic than its predecessor\u2019s as it includes a 10-day delay to allow coordination Nazif and El Adly were cleared of the charges in 2015. The court in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/nation\/conviction-taints-car-plate-firm\/news-story\/59529ecbd9c50380fa7f3471d710322f\">2011<\/a> had also initially convicted Erich Utsch AG\u2019s Chairman and CEO, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=51231820&privcapId=30587566\">Helmut Jungbluth<\/a>, with the ministers, sending him to one year in prison in absentia. Having been sentenced in absentia, Jungbluth could not appeal the decision as he was not physically present in Egypt. The company responded and its subsidiaries\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/snapshot.asp?privcapId=46129536\">Utsch M.O.V.E.R.S. International<\/a>and\u00a0Erich Utsch, as well as Jungbluth himself, filed an international arbitration case against Egypt seeking compensation for damages in ICSID Case No. <a href=\"https:\/\/icsid.worldbank.org\/en\/Pages\/cases\/casedetail.aspx?CaseNo=ARB\/13\/37\">ARB\/13\/37<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good news: <\/strong>After the parties agreed to suspend case proceedings in July 2016, El Bahabety tells us an agreement has been reached and a settlement between Egypt, Utsch, and Jungbluth is currently being drafted and will be signed soon. The agreement was possible following a 2015 amendment to article 18-B of the criminal procedures law that allowed for lawyers to represent clients who were convicted in absentia in felonies and file to reinstate proceedings, which resulted in Jungbluth\u2019s acquittal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026Separately, sources told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Pages\/StoryDetails.aspx?ID=325021\">Al Mal<\/a><strong> that the office of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is getting involved to help resolve disputes surrounding Orascom Housing Communities (OHC)\u2019s Haram City affordable housing project<\/strong>. The project came to a halt in 2011, but Ittihadiya has reportedly tasked the Ministerial Committee for Settlement of Investment Disputes to resolve the disputes with international partners in the project. <strong>El Bahabety could not confirm Al Mal\u2019s assertion of Ittihadiya\u2019s involvement<\/strong>, but told us talks with OHC are still in preliminary stages and all parties are considering means to settle the dispute. This appears to be giving Egypt significant leverage on the international arena, allowing it to assert its policies and vindicating President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/12\/27\/the-sisi-doctrine-in-foreign-policy\/\">multi-polar foreign policy doctrine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over in Brussels<\/strong> \u2014 where the endgame for the EU is stemming the flow of illegal migrants from North Africa \u2014 <strong>Egypt was promised further support through development programs<\/strong> by the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos who met with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. Shoukry reasserted Egypt;s position that it will not hold detention camps for migrants and refugees, <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/1398849.aspx\">Ahram Gate<\/a> reported. The meeting, which is part of a series of talks which could see Egypt reach and Turkey-style migration agreement with the EU, follows a state visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel last weekend, where she signed for USD 500 mn in new aid for Egypt and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/03\/05\/sisi-and-merkel-talk-refugee-agreement-development-aid-automotive-directive\/\">promised<\/a> El Sisi additional aid to help thwart migration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egyptians were spared entry into Trump\u2019s Muslim ban a second time around.<\/strong> President Donald Trump has not made his admiration of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi a secret, as some of his<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/02\/22\/rise-of-sebastian-gorka-a-key-trump-adviser-who-loves-el-sisi\/\">top advisers<\/a> advocate for forming a regional alliance with Egypt at the center, despite some in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/donald-trump-muslims_us_58b9bf7ee4b0b9989417709e\">US press<\/a> decrying that this comes at the expense of human rights. It appears we are heading that way following United States Central Command Commander General Joseph L. Votel\u2019s visit last month where he called for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/02\/27\/centom-commander-in-egypt-meets-with-el-sisi-sobhi\/\">renewing the Bright Star<\/a> joint military exercises. the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Opinion\/Its-time-for-Washington-to-strengthen-ties-with-Egypt-483412\">Jerusalem Post<\/a>\u2019s Joel Rosenberg makes the argument for <strong>why Trump must do more to court President Abdel Fattah El Sisi<\/strong>, which he describes as having leading a reformation of Islam in the region. According to an unnamed source, the government is looking to import 1.2 mn tonnes of raw sugar throughout this year. Supply Minister Ali El Moselhy had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/03\/06\/supply-minister-sets-price-of-sugar-at-egp-10-5kg\/\">reduced the price of sugar<\/a> earlier this week to EGP 10.5 per kg for regular consumers, and set the price of sugar sold to traders at EGP 9,250 per tonne.
