While negotiations resumed after ADQ\u2019s acquisition went through, the merger faced another setback last month when it was reported that the transaction was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/92de8a18-0919-4f48-a139-30e90cbce7bd\/%253cmark%253esidpec%253c%2Fmark%253e-ethydco-merger-to-go-through-another-financial-evaluation\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">back in the financial evaluation stage<\/a> in light of the change in the USD-EGP exchange rate following the float of the EGP in March.<\/p><p class=\"tag-border-left\">FROM THE DEBT MARKETS-<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt5\"><\/a> <strong>The CBE\u2019s bond-selling bonanza is showing no signs of slowing down: <\/strong>The Central Bank of Egypt sold nearly EGP 54.5 bn in EGP-denominated, three-year treasury bonds yesterday \u2014 over 10x its target of EGP 5 bn \u2014 according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/auctions\/egp-t-bonds-fixed-coupon\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the bank. The reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides further degrades soil health, leading to declining yields and increased input costs. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Hydroponic farming? <\/strong>Hydroponic farming is a method of growing crops without soil. Instead, nutrient rich water provides the plants with the needed nutrients and minerals. Hydroponics systems can be set up both inside and outside and offers the option of controlling the precise amounts of light and nutrients the plants get. This method of farming uses much less water than traditional farming, can be set up in urban areas, and produces greater yields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Hydroponic farming means a whole lot of water savings: <\/strong>Hydroponic farming can reduce water usage by up to 70-80% compared to soil-based systems, according to a study published in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2214785322056048#:~:text=Through%20hydroponic%20farming%20system%20we,when%20compared%20to%20its%20counterpart.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Materials Today<\/a>. \u201cBecause there is no water loss through the bacteria and other microorganisms present in water, there is less evaporation of water when compared to its counterpart,\u201d the study says. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/4\/T0551E\/t0551e07.htm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Over 99% of the water absorbed<\/a> by plants is lost by transpiration and evaporation from the plant surface. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt has a water scarcity problem: <\/strong>Egypt faces an annual water deficit of around 7 bn cubic meters and could see its water resources run out by 2025. They also help eliminate soil-borne diseases and pests. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Enter Plug\u2019n\u2019Grow:<\/strong> Homegrown startup <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plugngrow.me\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Plug\u2019n\u2019Grow<\/a> offers hydroponic solutions and services to large agribusinesses and new growers. The startup is actively working to make hydroponic systems more accessible to local farmers by developing low-tech, low-cost solutions, particularly for farmers in desert and saltwater regions, co-founder Nouan El Said told Enterprise. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The road to spreading hydroponic solutions across Egypt: <\/strong>Plug\u2019n\u2019Grow works with international organizations to provide training programs focused on promoting hydroponic farming and improving water and fertilizer efficiency. These programs aim to educate farmers and young people on the economic and environmental benefits of hydroponics, El Said tells us. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not an immediate solution, but a step forward: <\/strong>While Egypt's economy will continue to rely heavily on traditional agriculture, hydroponic systems, particularly in desert farming, offer a viable path towards more sustainable and profitable farming practices, El Said says. She added that while it may not be a complete solution to climate change, it effectively reduces water consumption and eliminates the need for pesticides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It also offers a solution to unpredictable weather conditions: <\/strong>Commercial crops like leafy greens, tomatoes, strawberries, and potatoes \u2014 key income generators for Egypt \u2014 could benefit from hydroponic systems, which offer semi-controlled environments that are more resilient to unpredictable climate changes affecting traditional farming, she added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Implementation doesn\u2019t come without challenges:<\/strong> One of the primary obstacles in the face of implementing hydroponic systems is its high cost \u2014 the bill associated with setting up a hydroponic farm is hefty taking into account \u201crenting the space, mortgage payments, the renovation of a building or space to accommodate the hydroponic structures, initial costs for materials, and costs of the labor and electricity to keep the farm up and running,\u201d according to PSCI.
