There are many reasons why, in a nation of &gt;100 mn, the private sector struggles to fill both blue- and white-collar vacancies \u2014 and the majority of those reasons rest in the education system. Unhappy with the new system that forces them to purchase flour at market prices, <strong>bakeries across the country are still threatening to strike or shut down in reaction<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=01082017&amp;id=40d2457e-322d-4f92-942b-8790dd4852ad\">according to Al Shorouk<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>Open any business news website this morning and you\u2019ll be forgiven for thinking there is <\/strong><strong>only one story globally that matters:<\/strong> Apple shares hit a new record after the company posted its best non-holiday quarter in two years on strong iPhone, iPad and Mac sales. CEO Tim Cook also said that \u201cWe really like what we see for the beginning of the back-to-school season\u201d as Apple \u201cissued strong revenue guidance for its fourth fiscal quarter, suggesting strong sales growth year-over-year,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-q3-2017-earnings-revenue-eps-iphone-sales-2017-8\">Business Insider<\/a> reports. \u201cThe strong guidance also hinted at the launch of a redesigned iPhone in September, which is expected to sell briskly.\u201d Bloomberg also takes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-01\/apple-s-forecast-signals-strong-sales-of-new-iphones-this-year\">forward-looking view<\/a>, and the story is getting extensive coverage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d815f1da-76ef-11e7-90c0-90a9d1bc9691\">Financial Times<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-sales-rise-pushed-by-sales-of-ipads-and-macs-1501619719\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-apple-results-idUSKBN1AH57U\">Reuters<\/a>, depending on where you prefer to read your news. For geeks, <a href=\"http:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/17\/08\/01\/notes-of-interest-from-apples-q3-2017-conference-call\">Apple Insider<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/\">9to5Mac<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/\">Macrumors<\/a> are going wall-to-wall.<\/p><p><strong>The bond market is a bubble at the moment,<\/strong> former Fed Chief Alan Greenspan says in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-07-31\/no-bubble-in-stocks-but-look-out-when-bonds-pop-greenspan-says\">interview with Bloomberg<\/a>. Real long-term interest rates are too low and unsustainable, Greenspan says, adding that when they do bounce back, the move upwards will be a rapid and could come as quite a shock. The former chairman references a theory known as the Fed Model to explain that the fact that bonds are outpacing equities as evidence that <strong>inflationary pressure isn\u2019t priced into bonds<\/strong>. While stock markets have proven robust against dips in the bond market, the moves have been limited because low inflation and slow growth have kept yields also low through rough patches. Greenspan thinks that the looming USD 4.5 tn that the US government needs to unwind and the era of stimulus ending threaten to burst the bond bubble. But hey, he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2009\/04\/02\/greenspan-john-taylor-fed-rates-china-opinions-columnists-housing-bubble.html\">been wrong before<\/a>.<\/p><p>Meanwhile: <strong>The <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-global-forex-idUSKBN1AI01Y?il=0\"><strong>greenback has bounced back<\/strong><\/a><strong> from 15-month lows<\/strong> globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/goldman-sachs-finds-itself-in-unusual-spot-last-place-in-trading-1501579804\"><strong>Goldman<\/strong><strong>Sachs is on a charm offensive<\/strong><\/a>to But talking heads were (understandably) more interested in dissecting the newly proposed restructuring of the nation\u2019s education system. (We have full coverage of both stories in Speed Round, below.)<\/p>\n<p>On Hona Al Asema,<strong> Lamees Al Hadidi said the reserves rose largely due to government <\/strong><strong>sales of debt instruments and bonds,<\/strong> but are still expected to have a positive impact on Egypt\u2019s credit rating and FX rates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AVgtJllVj0g\">watch, runtime 5:41<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Over on Kol Youm,<strong> Amr Adib also touched on the reserves<\/strong> \u2014 with far less grace than his better half, contenting himself with questioning why the USD exchange rate and prices of consumer goods haven\u2019t magically dropped as a result of the record-high reserves (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uyx3jTQVZNc\">watch, runtime 1:20<\/a>). Someone needs to be run through a remedial economics class in the new thanaweya amma system.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>Speaking of which: The star of the night was Tarek Shawki.<\/strong> Masaa DMC\u2019s Osama Kamal spoke to the education minister about the new system that will replace thanaweya amma. The traditional system (which is now exiting stage right) killed any chance students would ever innovate, Shawki said. Under the new system, he added, students will be evaluated based on both coursework and exams, rather than just the latter (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-eH-LTAKYWA\">watch, runtime 13:42<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shawki also rang up Lamees<\/strong>, telling her (in part) that primary-level certificates awarded after sixth grade are being scrapped because they are of no value to a child\u2019s education, but require significant budget outlays (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ebuRn2HyaHk\">watch, runtime 13:02<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lamees dedicated a large chunk of last night\u2019s episode<\/strong> \u2014 her last before she goes off vacation for the month \u2014 <strong>to covering hepatitis C treatment efforts<\/strong>. More than 680k patients were treated between September 2015 and December 2016, according to the deputy head of the National Committee for the Control of Viral Hepatitis, Yehia El Shazly (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jXDsHgDNSuM\">watch, runtime: 3:56<\/a>). He attributed the USD 4.7 bn net gain to both foreign inflows, which came in at USD 3.7 bn, and the banking system drawing in USD 4 bn. Egypt received a USD 1.25 bn tranche <a href=\"http:\/\/ara.reuters.com\/article\/businessNews\/idARAKBN1AH4D9\">from the IMF loan in July<\/a>. The previous peak in central bank reserves was in December 2010, closing that month at USD 36.005 bn. Reserves <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/egypt-cenbank-reserves-idUSL5N1KN56G\">had dropped to a low<\/a> of USD 19 bn in October of 2016, right before the EGP float the following month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEgypt\u2019s reserves now cover almost eight months of imports<\/strong>, which adds credibility to the new currency regime,\u201d CI Capital economist Hany Farahat tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-01\/egypt-s-net-foreign-reserves-surge-to-record-high-in-july\">Bloomberg\u2019s Ahmed Feteha<\/a>. The data show that Egypt is able to attract strong inflows, \u201cimplying the country\u2019s currency problems are almost over,\u201d he said. <strong>Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said the reserve level \u201cmeans that the Egyptian economy has recovered,\u201d <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2017\/08\/01\/world\/middleeast\/ap-ml-egypt-economy-.html\">the Associated Press reports<\/a>. Uhm\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than USD 13 bn has flowed into Egyptian T-Bills as of July 25<\/strong>, with yields soaring over 22 percent, according to Bloomberg. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/341916\/14\/%D9%83%D8%AC%D9%88%D9%83--3-5-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AD%D8%AC%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%AA%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%85%D8%AD%D9%81%D8%B8%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%81%D9%89-%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88\">Foreigners snapped up debt<\/a> totalling USD 3.5 bn in July. Most of the inflows go into the CBE\u2019s repatriation fund, which backs expedited transfers of funds for foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>Capital Economics, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.cdn.capitaleconomics.com\/1bacd5\/strains-in-qatars-markets-ease.pdf\">says in a research note (pdf)<\/a> that <strong>the CBE \u201chas also been <\/strong><strong>intervening in the foreign exchange market to prevent the EGP from appreciating<\/strong>, in the process rebuilding its FX reserves. This upwards pressure on the currency appears to be related to a jump in capital inflows, which we think it is likely to be temporary. Indeed, foreigners\u2019 net purchases of Egyptian equities, which jumped immediately after the devaluation of the EGP late last year, have now started to fall.\u201d As a result, the firm expects the EGP \u201c<strong>to weaken modestly against the USD over the next few years<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026All of this comes as World Bank Egypt Country Director Asad Alam said Egypt\u2019s <\/strong><strong>economic reforms are improving the country\u2019s competitiveness<\/strong> and attracting new investments, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsanews.com\/2017\/08\/01\/1041291\">according to Al Borsa<\/a>. A percentage of 8.9% of this increase is due to the international bond issuance and medium \/ long term facilities the government has taken, whilst the remaining increase is caused by banks and the private sector, which rose slightly from USD 10.8 bn in 2QFY2016-17 to USD 11.7 bn in 3QFY2016-17.
