Stil, what news we have is meaty, and we have plenty of other reading to keep your pre- and post-fast hours filled.<\/p><p><strong>The investment and oil ministries are reportedly signing agreements<\/strong> with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development today, <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/1920956.aspx\">according to Al-Ahram<\/a>. No details on the agreement were disclosed.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>Goodbye, El Sherka El Almaneya:<\/strong> Longtime readers know we have reservations about the proposed Cyber Crimes Act, but there\u2019s one provision we\u2019re very much down with: An article that would stop the flood of unsolicited spam SMSes. On the table is a proposition that would <strong>penalize mobile network operators for leaking or selling their customers\u2019 personal data to telemarketing companies<\/strong> or any other entity that will use the data to promote any goods and services, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youm7.com\/story\/2018\/5\/21\/%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%8B-%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%B3%D8%A7%D8%A6%D9%84-%D8%B4%D8%B1%D9%83%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%B4%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B2%D8%B9%D8%AC%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D8%A8%D8%B3-6-%D8%B4%D9%87%D9%88%D8%B1-%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B3%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AA\/3801827\">Youm7 reports<\/a>. Article 25 of the law would impose a prison sentence of at least six months and a fine ranging between EGP 50k and 100k for violators. The House of Representatives had approved the text of the draft law <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/05\/15\/cyber-crimes-act-forces-service-providers-to-hold-user-data-for-180-days\/\">earlier this month<\/a>, but postponed its final vote due to a lack of quorum.<\/p><p><strong>Goldman Sachs Asset Management sees the outlook for risk asset returns improving this year in its 2018 Mid-Year Outlook report. <\/strong>This comes off the back of the global slowdown which began in 2017, which Goldman sees as having lowered the bar for positive news on growth going forward. It sees interest rates, a sell-off in equities, and emerging market assets creating more room for potential upside for risk asset returns. The report notes that market volatility has re-emerged and while Goldman expects further drawdowns, it does \u201cnot anticipate a shift to a persistently high-volatility regime.\u201d <strong>The firm expects three additional interest rate hikes by the US Federal reserve this year.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Despite the sell-off, Goldman is still bullish on EMs: <\/strong>\u201cWe are bearish US rates, while bullish on EM currencies with strong underlying macro stories,\u201d says the report (we see Egypt fitting comfortably here). The firm also sees value in emerging market debt after recent underperformance in the sector. In equities, Goldman lumps emerging markets with US small caps as \u201cbright spots.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsam.com\/content\/dam\/gsam\/pdfs\/common\/en\/public\/articles\/outlook\/2018\/GSAM_2018_Mid_Year_Investment_Outlook.pdf?sa=n&amp;rd=n\">You can read the full report here (pdf)<\/a>, or access it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsam.com\/content\/gsam\/global\/en\/market-insights\/market-strategy\/outlook\/2018\/midyear-outlook-2018.html?cid=eml-np-briefings-briefings-textlink-201801--#section-background_df24_background_sectionheaderwithtab\">through the landing page<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>In other news from the Emerging Markets Zombie Apocalypse:<\/strong> <strong>Turkey\u2019s lira tanked yesterday.<\/strong> The currency is now down 17% for the year as traders turn bearish on EMs with \u201ccurrent account deficits and \/ or high dollar-denominated debt and \/ or political uncertainty and \/ or a dependency on oil,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9e31de96-5cec-11e8-ad91-e01af256df68\">Financial Times reports<\/a>. Meanwhile, <strong>foreign investors are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/94e0004c-5ce3-11e8-ad91-e01af256df68\"><strong>walking away from South African bonds<\/strong><\/a>, having now become net sellers.<\/p><p><strong>All of this has prompted UBS to very helpfully state the obvious: \u201cEMs will have to refind <\/strong>[sic]<strong> a competitive edge.\u201d<\/strong> Writing for the FT, which of late has come across as the (1950s-style) Pravda for the EM Zombie Apocalypse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/99617368-5c29-11e8-ad91-e01af256df68\">UBS\u2019 deputy head of macro strategy declares<\/a>, \u201cHistorical truisms about EM\u2019s high growth beta and demographic dividend are coming into question. The answers don\u2019t lie in their monetary or fiscal policy, which, broadly speaking, remain orthodox. They are to be found in education, innovation and productivity.\u201d Thanks.<\/p><p><strong>Don\u2019t feel picked on, though: Goldman Sachs sees the US economy going to hell in a handbasket, too. <\/strong>Goldman\u2019s chief economist has written that fiscal outlook for the United States is \u201cnot good \u2026 and could pose a threat to the country\u2019s economic security during the next recession,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/05\/21\/goldman-sachs-the-fiscal-outlook-for-the-us-is-not-good.html\">CNBC reports<\/a>. Investors, meanwhile, are <strong>as afraid of the tanking of corporate bonds as they are of the EM sell-off. <\/strong>A Bloomberg Barclays index of US investment-grade credit is down 3.9% so far this year, while a JPMorgan Chase index sees these shortfalls as the third-worst 100-day returns on US corporate bonds since 2000. The Times\u2019 business desk says its Marx Ratio, named for Karl (<a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/karlremarks?lang=en\">not this Karl<\/a>) \u201ccaptures the relationship between a company\u2019s profits \u2014 the return to capital, on a per-employee basis \u2014 and how much its median employee is compensated, a rough proxy for the return to labor. \u2026 <strong>Companies with high Marx Ratios offer particularly strong rewards to their shareholders relative to workers.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not surprisingly, companies in labor-intensive industries tend to favor workers more: <\/strong>Amongst them are \u201chuge retailers Walmart and Amazon, hotel companies like Marriott and Hilton, and both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.\u201d Others with high Marx Ratios include tobacco giants, consumer products companies and fast-food outlets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yeah, yeah, but what about in finance? <\/strong>Does it really surprise you to learn that investment bankers claim more of the economic pie in the US than do commercial bankers? \u201cThe profitability of those commercial banks is driven by things the company controls: their network of branches, their information technology systems, their brand reputation. But it wasn\u2019t always so: In Industrial Age Britain, scions of banking families at some of the most well-recognized names in the sector (Barclays, Lloyds, and Gurney) built a reputation as gracious givers and founders of modern philanthropy. Prior to the turn of the 20th century, the role of government did not encompass social welfare.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The slack was picked up by fat cat bankers<\/strong>, according to this riveting BBC documentary (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cl1QQ-jX7nI\">watch, runtime: 59:09<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A peculiar mix of religious intolerance, cultural norms, and the industrial revolution helped drive the giving spirit of bankers.<\/strong> Some of the most well-established names in banking were Quakers, a derided religious sect of pacifists and moralists, who because of being shut out of professions had to turn to trading and finance. That was coupled with the \u201cvery Christian\u201d belief that it was easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven. Whatever wealth was attained must, by moral obligation, be distributed. The industrial revolution, which led to a yawning gap in income inequality and widespread poverty, made charity an imperative.
