No further details were provided.<\/p><p><strong>Emerging market equities are back into bear territory <\/strong>as currency crises in Turkey and Argentina deepen and the pain spreads to other markets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e19e29be-b0c5-11e8-8d14-6f049d06439c\">the Financial Times says<\/a>. The sell-off intensified yesterday, reflecting a broader direction by investors to curb exposure to EM assets, whether stocks, bonds, or currencies. \u201cMSCI\u2019s broad gauge of mid- and large-capitalisation EM equities dropped 1.6% on Wednesday, bringing the decline over the past half-dozen trading sessions to 4.4%,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ceaac976-b0e7-11e8-99ca-68cf89602132\">the paper said<\/a>. Wall Street futures also dropped yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ceaac976-b0e7-11e8-99ca-68cf89602132\">fueled by trade war concerns<\/a> and signs that Chinese economic growth is slowing down.<\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s now the longest EM rout since 2008<\/strong>, writes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-09-05\/emerging-markets-go-to-goodbye-from-good-buy-as-selloff-persists?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a>, regardless of the asset class you\u2019re talking about, suggesting that \u201cnot one of the seven biggest selloffs since the financial crisis \u2014 including the so-called taper tantrum \u2014 inflicted such pain for so long on the developing world.\u201d With a \u201cstampede of selling across emerging markets\u201d now sweeping from Turkey and Argentina to South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia, the business information service says, \u201ca cadre of <strong>investors and strategists from JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. to BlackRock Inc.\u201d are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-09-05\/jpmorgan-blackrock-warn-of-contagion-pummeling-emerging-markets?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><strong>all using the word \u201ccontagion.\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p><p><strong>Why contagion? <\/strong>\u201cThe argument goes like this: while the asset class may offer value over the long haul, investors will sell relatively safe holdings to cover losses in more vulnerable markets or, worse, <strong>treat all emerging markets the same and sell indiscriminately. A herd mentality has taken over<\/strong>, meaning no matter what the relative risks and potential returns are in individual countries, investors who choose to buy run the risk of being trampled.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Don\u2019t expect a turnaround before early 2019<\/strong>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2018-09-05\/when-will-the-bleeding-stop-in-emerging-markets\">Bloomberg Opinion<\/a> author suggests in a muddled piece that\u2019s getting social shares, but which is really trying to make the point that America is vulnerable, too.<\/p><p><strong>The EGX30 was down 1.1% for the day<\/strong>. Among the stocks blunting the decline were QNB Alahli (+2.1%) and Qalaa Holdings (+1.8%), with the latter rising on news that it may hike its stake in subsidiary Egyptian Refining Company. We noted yesterday that Qalaa co-founder Hisham El Khazindar had suggested Qalaa could increase its exposure to ERC if the refiner were to go ahead with a capital increase. ERC, which is now 98% complete, is set to start trial operations this fall and is widely expected to have a transformative impact on Qalaa\u2019s financials when it is fully operational next year.<\/p><p>In other news this morning:<\/p><p><strong>Sukuk will rise in popularity long-term despite 1H2018 dip: <\/strong>Moody\u2019s Investor Service expects sukuk issuances to grow in the long run, as governments continue to invest assets in a mix of traditional and Islamic financing tools. That is despite a 12% decrease in issuances to USD 55 bn in 1H2018. The assessment comes despite past pledges by Governor Tarek Amer that the CBE is out of the business of managing the currency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much longer can it continue?<\/strong> While Egypt\u2019s rising FX reserves and improving external position may allow the CBE more time to prop up the currency, the sting of the sell-off in EM assets may force it to abandon the policy. Egyptian assets have been strained as \u201cforeign investors have been net sellers of Egyptian stocks over the past few months and also reduced their holdings of Egyptian government bonds, which has contributed to a fresh rise in bond yields.\u201d Furthermore, the IMF is also likely to push the government to stop intervening in the currency market to keep it attractive to foreign investors, the report says.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s keep this all in perspective: <strong>Capital Economics sees the EGP losing up to 10% of its value against the USD by 2020<\/strong>. The pound is seen as easing to 19-20 per greenback by then.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once again, this is why we don\u2019t see the central bank cutting interest rates soon. <\/strong>The CBE\u2019s monetary policy committee meets at month\u2019s end to decide on interest rates. We\u2019ve previously championed rate cuts to kickstart private-sector borrowing, but now believe the MPC will leave rates on hold to ensure Egypt remains attractive to the carry trade in an environment in which other markets are taking. We delved into why the firm launched its Egypt office, its views on the economy, and whether consultancies are <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/news\/consultancies-rising\/308845\/\"><i>eating the lunch of marketing firms<\/i><\/a><i>. Edited excerpts:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Egypt? And why now?<\/strong> It must be said first that we are not new to Egypt, as we\u2019ve been actively serving clients here in various industries for many years. As an expanding global firm, we\u2019ve been eyeing an expansion into Africa for some time. And since a key feature of our strategy wherever we are is local knowhow, and we have a solid and experienced Egypt team, opening an office here was the next logical step. Our office in Cairo will be led by Martin Janzen and Sara Shenouda \u2014 two financial services experts who have been spearheading a local team of specialists entrenched in a variety of sectors. The Cairo office has also full access to our global expertise across all industries from San Francisco to Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is an exciting time to be in Egypt<\/strong>. We\u2019ve been following very closely the efforts the government has made to attract foreign investment and financial institutions through its ambitious reform agenda, particularly those reforms that have ensured the free and uninhibited movement of capital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We see the inflation resulting from these reforms as not only temporary, but an opportunity<\/strong>. The question is, will the Egyptian market be ready when the dust finally settles? Are companies already preparing their products, services, prices, value proposition, business models, digital strategies, and their monetization to respond to this situation? We always tell our customers that there are those who make things happen, there are those who watch things happen, and there are those who wonder what happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re very excited about the financial services industry<\/strong>, which we see as still in its infancy in terms of its potential to grow. We like what the government is doing with the sector as well, particularly its financial inclusion initiatives and the potential growth of fintech and e-payments. These are all areas where we have much experience and knowledge to share. Our Cairo team is currently focusing on financial services, real estate, and tourism due to the growth potential we see in these industries. We\u2019re also involved in telecommunications and energy, as well as consumer goods and retail. The mid-term plan is of course to cover all relevant industries in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our secret sauce is all about the power of topline:<\/strong> What distinguishes us from other consultancies is our adherence to what we like to call topline power. What we mean by that is essentially doing away with cost-cutting and restructuring, which we see as inherently limited and cumbersome. Instead, the focus is on growth, which is in principle limitless. We show our clients how to achieve it, through winning pricing, marketing, and sales strategies. If a company develops an innovative product or service, for example, we help to find the right price points and to come up with the best possible go-to-market strategy. We develop pragmatic and easy-to-implement solutions for our customers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I cannot stress enough that we are a revenue-side consultancy<\/strong>. Our customers rely on us for this and we typically refrain from delving into the dreaded cost-cutting, including IT infrastructure development, automation, etc. We also strictly avoid legal advice and services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And while marketing is a core component of our strategy, we do not see ourselves as a marketing and advertising agency<\/strong>. We are not worried about our industry being squeezed by such agencies. As a matter of fact, we see them as complementary to our business model. When it comes to marketing, Simon-Kucher & Partners helps its clients with the big picture: their segmentation strategies, marketing strategies, new product designs, portfolio optimization, value communication, marketing entry strategies etc. This is a totally different ball game from running ad campaigns, which we often hire out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Typical challenges facing our customers in Egypt look to us for?<\/strong> First, our clients look to us to help develop the best digitization and online growth strategies catered to their business. EBRD is planning to extend EUR 800 mn of financing to Egypt before the year is out, Heckman tells the newspaper. EOS has already enforced 410 standards since the beginning of the year, according to Afifi.
