not much different over in Egypt or in the region more widely. In this unusually brisk issue today, we\u2019ve picked up news of Qalaa\u2019s buyback program wrapping up its first subscription phase, the government rejecting a proposal to hike the price of subsidized sugar, and more analyst forecasts coming our way suggesting that we should be pretty optimistic about inflation data for May set to be released today.<\/p><p class=\"tag-border-left\">HAPPENING TODAY- <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Some analysts think we could see inflation dip below 30%: <\/strong>Analysts appear to be united that when state statistics agency Capmas and the central bank publish inflation data for May later today, we will see inflation dip for a third <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/54c385de-e76b-441d-9edf-fd578c68735a\/%253cmark%253einflation%253c%2Fmark%253e-cools-for-the-second-consecutive-month-in-april\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">consecutive<\/a> month. But analysts seem to be divided on how much, with Naeem Brokerage forecasting that annual urban inflation will slow 4.1 percentage points from 32.5% the month before to 28.4% and monthly inflation will be negative for the first time in 23 months in a note seen by Enterprise. investment bank UBS\u2019 Global Research and Evidence Lab laid out three possible scenarios for where they see the supply and demand for FX going over the four quarter period ending 2Q 2025 in a report seen by Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Under their base scenario<\/strong>, the lender expects the country to see excess FX inflows of around USD 7-8 bn available for reserve buildup in the four quarter period ending in 2Q 2025. <\/p>\n<p 1H 2024 levels, and Egypt does not regain full access to international capital markets, the report sees the country having a \u2014 albeit small \u2014 net FX outflow of USD 2-3 bn. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: <\/strong>Suez Canal revenues continued to decline <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1ff7ecf6-25db-4d19-9267-d9ae213a2c04\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in May<\/a>, falling some 64.3% y-o-y to record USD 337.8 mn. Over half of the ships passing through the waterway have diverted their routes via the Cape of Good Hope, to avoid the risk of being caught in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fc619698-15b1-47a9-9763-294d5aecdd57\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Houthis\u2019 attacks<\/a> on vessels passing the Red Sea, cutting of a substantial portion of state revenues. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The caveat: <\/strong>UBS advises that these figures should be interpreted as indicative rather than definitive forecasts. The report underscores the presence of considerable uncertainties, especially regarding portfolio inflows, which are susceptible to rapid shifts in investor sentiment. While the current outlook suggests a positive trajectory, actual outcomes may significantly vary due to diverse economic and geopolitical factors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>UBS\u2019 advice to investors:<\/strong> The Swiss investment bank recommends holding Egyptian t-bills without hedging against FOREX fluctuations, citing a range-bound outlook for the pound between EGP 46-51 against the USD for the remainder of the year. Additionally, UBS\u2019 positive FX outlook factors in the upcoming tourism season in the second half of the year, which traditionally sees increased tourism activity, as a favorable factor for the EGP. Moreover, UBS anticipates that the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) of the EGP will \u201crise only to its 20th percentile\u201d compared to its ten-year average by the end of the year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SOUND SMART:<\/strong> The REER is a measure of a currency's value against a basket of other currencies, adjusted for inflation. This means that while the EGP may strengthen, it is not expected to become significantly overvalued and make Egyptian imports unattractive to foreign buyers.<\/p>\n<p
