The price of a pack of Merit has risen 15% to EGP 85, while the L&amp;M brand will now go for EGP 59 a pack, up 18%. Marlboro prices have increased 14-17%, with a standard pack priced at EGP 79 and a pack of Crafted at EGP 69. <\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IQOS smokers haven\u2019t been spared: <\/strong>The company has also raised the price of its HEETS Selections, HEETS Dimensions, and TEREA products 14% to EGP 64.<\/p><p class=\"tag-border-left\">EGP WATCH-<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a> <strong>Deval, rate hike incoming? <\/strong>JP Morgan expects the government to devalue the EGP to 45-50 against the USD, alongside raising rates by 200 bps, the bank wrote in a note on Friday. \u201cWe think the CBE will be looking to secure some FX inflows and engineer a lowering of the parallel market FX rate before considering a move to a managed float FX regime,\u201d the report said. JP Morgan sees the central bank cutting rates in 4Q 2024 \u201cas inflation is likely to ease, largely helped by base effects and a converging parallel rate\u201d after unifying the official and parallel exchange rates.<\/p><p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More optimistic than other estimates: <\/strong>Oxford Economics <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8c6d887d-33f4-4c58-8b95-416941a67efe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sees the EGP falling<\/a> to 55-60 to the USD in banks by the end of the year if the central bank moves to a flexible exchange rate regime, while Bloomberg\u2019s chief emerging markets economist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21f48d1a-051c-4c8a-be41-0c7a7a5e819b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ziad Daoud sees<\/a> the greenback officially changing hands at EGP 50 or more by the end of the year. Egyptian officials and the IMF have already agreed on all \u201cthe key issues for the review,\u201d Georgieva told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3bs78b5f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Arabiya Business<\/a> in a separate interview at the summit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More encouraging words on the size of the package:<\/strong> Georgieva said that the Fund is preparing a \u201clarge amount\u201d of additional funding to \u201cgive a dose of confidence to the Egyptian economy by enhancing the size of the support program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No word on the exact size of the package<\/strong>, but Enterprise sources with knowledge have put it in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/08f51e36-cd3a-411d-a974-659fd3601066\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 6-9 bn ballpark<\/a>. Meanwhile, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/21f48d1a-051c-4c8a-be41-0c7a7a5e819b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">one government source believes<\/a> the government is closing in on a combined USD 12 bn in financing, with the IMF doubling the value of the package it had offered to USD 6 bn and other, unnamed \u201cdevelopment partners\u201d contributing a further USD 6 bn \u2014 a figure echoe by Gooldman Sachs. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Multiple exchange rates are \u201cdisastrous\u201d for Egypt<\/strong>, Georgieva told Al Arabiya Business. She emphasized the need for Egypt to move in a direction that allows the exchange rate to be determined by market forces and eliminate the parallel market. Georgieva <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/34d82cce-f4dd-436a-b2d7-ef783c0903de\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">has been very vocal<\/a> about the need for Egypt to devalue its currency, explaining that otherwise the country risks bleeding reserves. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No full float on the cards:<\/strong> Georgieva confirmed that the Fund\u2019s talks with Egypt have been about a more flexible exchange rate, but not a float of the EGP. The Fund is currently waiting on Egyptian authorities to allow a more flexible exchange rate and fulfill other conditions before it grants us more funding, she added, without specifying what those other promises are. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Reducing inflation is still the main target: <\/strong>\u201cPolicy makers in Egypt must focus on inflation,\u201d Georgieva told Asharq Business, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ba6da86a-4d90-4e47-98da-3beef39b5c1f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterating<\/a> earlier comments from the international lender\u2019s director of communications, Julie Kozack, who said last month that the IMF is supporting the government \u201cto reduce inflation and to gradually move to an inflation-targeting regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IMF calms tone on state asset sales: <\/strong>\u201cThe situation in Gaza has put pressure on Egypt, including its state assets sales program, and we want Egypt to sell at the appropriate time,\u201d Georgieva said. She called for the government to not \u201crush to sell shares in government companies under the current circumstances,\u201d in contrast to the Fund\u2019s position in April last year, when it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7c21c86c-40a9-40f1-8e97-0dc7f259a895\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">postponed<\/a> the first review of the country\u2019s USD We spoke with industry insiders to find out what is driving Egypt\u2019s edtech startups to make the move abroad to our Gulf neighbors and why Gulf venture capital firms are so eager to get a piece of our edtech startup scene. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: <\/strong>In just the last few months, we heard from iSchool that they\u2019re <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b0009b89-01f5-4160-bf2c-436afb133e14\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to expand<\/a> into Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, with sub-Saharan Africa on the cards for 2025. Post-acquisition Orcas is also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/1c96ca7b-29d1-4bc1-acad-1d844d665ce8\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">hoping to expand<\/a> into Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, while <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b2a2423e-0d47-4c4b-8044-54cb0f65bc7e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Akhdar<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a5e38745-faf9-40f6-a008-c2f295aa23bc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">OBM<\/a> also name check KSA in recent press releases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI- It\u2019s been a good year for Egyptian edtechs: <\/strong>Tutoring outfit Orcas was wholly acquired by Kuwaiti edtech Baims for an undisclosed sum earlier this year, while gamified classes creator iSchool raised USD 4.5 mn in a round led by Irish VC VentureWave only the month before. Gulf VCs have also been investing big in local edtech firms \u2014- Saudi accelerator Value Makers Studio (VMS) has recently made six-figure USD investments towards Arabic-language audiobook summary and education platform Akhdar and student career advisor OBM Education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">SO WHY THE GULF EXPANSION?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Expansion abroad = FX: <\/strong>The instability of the national currency limits startups' valuations and consequently their fundraising capacity, but firms with a profile in the Gulf will receive greater access to markets where transactions occur in foreign currencies, Moataz Abouonq CEO of VMS told Enterprise. \u201cThis diversification of revenue streams not only contributes to financial stability, but also positions startups favorably for international financial transactions, mitigating risks associated with currency fluctuations,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Startups are struggling to pay for services and supplies with local credit cards following<\/strong><strong> FX limits: <\/strong>After the central bank <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e68118bf-ed08-46df-a7d6-46dc4559afec\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">restricted<\/a> FX transactions on local currency credit cards to EGP 7,750 per month (about USD 250 at the official rate) in October, every business without access to FX that needs to pay Google or Microsoft \u2014 or that wants to run an ad campaign online, pay for cloud infrastructure, subscribe to a monitoring service, or pay for an industry-specific software tool \u2014 has been struggling to keep these services online. \u201cIn the short-term, business will have to survive by going to other markets,\u201d Acasia Ventures managing partner Aly El Shalakany <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/deedde16-57f5-4a0f-882b-8c65fae10621\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Enterprise in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The Gulf over Europe is a no-brainer:<\/strong> For any local startup looking to become a large company, it needs to be multinational, which is why it makes sense to start regionally, Baim\u2019s CSO Hossam Taher told Enterprise. The Gulf and wider Middle East have a culture of tutoring and after-school learning that is not as present in Europe, not to mention that startups looking outside of the MENA region would face higher taxes and competition, he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>** We spoke with Hossam Taher for a Blackboard deep-dive into the Baims\u2019 acquisition of Orcas<\/strong> the day after the news broke back in January. On top of this, the talent pool in Egypt is \u201cvery sophisticated and highly competitive because everyone is competing for such a small number of jobs,\u201d Taher told us.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And it\u2019s also mutually beneficial: <\/strong>Gulf VCs look to Egyptian edtechs to address the region\u2019s educational needs, Abouonq told us. Initiatives such as VMS\u2019 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vms.sa\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridge Program<\/a> aim to facilitate the entrance of Egyptian startups into the Saudi market and contribute towards national education targets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But Egypt still remains a great place to launch startups: <\/strong>\u201cEgypt is a diverse, huge, and cheap market, meaning you can practically launch anything and experiment with it at a very low cost, and then end up exporting that product or that service or that offering elsewhere.
