(Oh, and follow in your Dad\u2019s footsteps, not ours.)<\/p><p><b>To business:<\/b><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <b>The US Federal Reserve raised yesterday its benchmark overnight lending rate to <\/b><b>a range of 2.25-2.5%<\/b>, up from 2.00-2.25%, according to a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/monetarypolicy\/files\/monetary20181219a1.pdf?mod=article_inline\">released yesterday (pdf)<\/a>. The rate hike \u2014 the fourth this year \u2014 came despite pressure from US President Donald Trump to keep short-term interest rates where they were, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fed-raises-rates-but-signals-slightly-milder-path-of-future-increases-11545246216\">Wall Street Journal notes<\/a>. <b>Critically, Fed officials \u201cindicated they think they won\u2019t need to raise rates as much next year as they had anticipated<\/b> three months ago\u201d as a result of the slowdown of foreign economies and an uptick in volatility in financial markets that will act as a headwind to growth.<\/p><p><b>Fed Chair Jerome Powell\u2019s press conference on the decision triggered a sell-off in US <\/b><b>markets<\/b>, with the Dow Industrials, Nasdaq Composite, and S&amp;P 500 all ending the trading day in the red. \u201cWednesday\u2019s declines pulled the major averages further into correction territory, or a drop of at least 10% from their most recent highs. All three indexes have shed at least 8.5% this month alone.\u201d<\/p><p><b>Asian shares opened lower this morning<\/b>, following Wall Street down.<\/p><p><b>The rate hike tops global business news this morning. <\/b>The FT\u2019s Instant Insight column notes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/be9ba7b4-03d3-11e9-9d01-cd4d49afbbe3\">Powell put his finger on the \u201c\u2018mood of angst\u2019 and made it worse\u201d<\/a>, the Journal has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fed-raises-rates-but-signals-slightly-milder-path-of-future-increases-11545246216?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">a great recap<\/a>, and Reuters has wall-to-wall coverage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed\/fed-raises-interest-rates-signals-more-hikes-ahead-idUSKBN1OI0DV\">hike<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-stocks\/wall-st-tumbles-as-investors-fret-over-fed-policy-update-idUSKBN1OI1DC\">sell-off<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>The central bank here at home will next review interest rates <\/b>a week from today \u2014 on Thursday, 27 December.<\/p><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/2259.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p><p><b>After being clobbered by the EM Zombie Apocalypse in 2018, emerging markets have <\/b><b>reason to be optimistic that next year could bring better things<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7676e7fe-01e0-11e9-99df-6183d3002ee1\">says the FT.<\/a> EM assets have \u201ctaken a beating this year\u201d but have come out the other end with greater resilience and investor confidence, after tumbling currencies proved the pressure on them was localized and did not spark an EM-wide contagion. \u201cThe asset class is much better placed to weather negative shocks to risk appetite than it was earlier this year,\u201d said analysts at Citigroup. \u201cExternal financing gaps have closed, interest rates have risen, currencies are cheaper and EM is broadly speaking an \u2018under-owned\u2019 asset class.\u201d<\/p><p><b>Egypt and Ethiopia made Bloomberg\u2019s list of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2018-12-18\/2019-political-flashpoints-to-watch-from-russia-to-trump\"><b>political flashpoints to watch in 2019<\/b><\/a>, which warns that the two countries could come to loggerheads if Addis Ababa fills the reservoir behind the dam too quickly, threatening as much as 20% of Egypt\u2019s fresh water. The budget announcement, which sees the kingdom increasing its spending by 7% despite its stated aim of reducing its fiscal deficit, comes after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi sparked Between volatile stocks, bonds, commodities, and crypto currencies, this year was tough for hedge funds \u2014 even an imaginary one (Hindsight LLC) that lives \u201cin a world perpetually 12 months in the future,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-12-17\/not-even-hindsight-could-have-helped-you-make-money-this-year?srnd=premium-middle-east\">John Arthurs wrote in an opinion piece on Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cHindsight was able to exploit one big theme: \u2018America First.\u2019 A combination of aggressive trade rhetoric and Federal Reserve tightening on the part of the U.S. made life harder for everyone \u2014 and Hindsight, therefore, bet against anything that fell afoul of U.S. policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Whereas Hindsight is usually able to bring in plenty of earnings each year with its time advantage<\/b>, Arthurs says that only a truly unique combination of all the right moves would have been able to reap benefits. The 500\/220-kilovolt (kV) Samanoud and Aboul Matameer substations, completed with El Sewedy, will provide electricity to residents and industries in the Delta, Alexandria and Kafr El Sheikh areas. \u201cThe two news substations will not only deliver more electricity to more homes, located near Alexandria and Kafr El Sheikh Governorates, but also support the focus on industrialization by providing reliable power supply to energy-intensive industries,\u201d said Siemens Senior Executive Vice President of Siemens in Egypt Farag El-Saadany.
