<\/li>\n<li><b>You\u2019re also less optimistic about prospects for FDI<\/b> inflows into your specific sectors;<\/li>\n<li><b>And all of that is expressing itself in a sharp pullback on new investment:<\/b> A year ago, the vast majority of you thought your companies would invest more in the following six months. Today, less than half of you are saying the same thing.<\/li>\n<li><b>Fewer of you expect to be hiring in 2019<\/b> than thought their headcount would grow when we last surveyed you a year ago;<\/li>\n<li><b>You\u2019re hoping to keep wage growth under control<\/b> in 2019 after two years of sharp pay hikes.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>We have the full rundown on the results in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below. And taken on the whole, the results don\u2019t feel horribly surprising this far into a long economic reform program \u2014 one that guarantees we have miles to go before we sleep.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <b>Santa rally? Fuggedaboutit. <\/b>Stocks in Asia are mixed this morning and US stock futures pointed to a slightly lower opening today after Friday\u2019s sell-off. The EGX30, meanwhile, closed yesterday flat in light trading \u2014 about a third below the trailing 90-day average.<\/p><p><b>All signs point to more volatility as traders opt not to buy the dip<\/b>, the global business press is warning. Bank of America Merrill Lynch found that traders pulled USD 27.6 bn out of US equities last week \u2014 a figure it\u2019s calling the \u201csecond-biggest outflow of all time\u201d \u2014 and a further USD 39 bn was \u201cyanked from stocks worldwide,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/stock-market-crash-evidence-mounting-that-investors-are-expecting-one-2018-12\">Business Insider<\/a> reports. At the same time, some USD 81 bn flowed into money-market mutual funds last week (the biggest inflow on record) and a steep USD 46 bn flowed <i>out <\/i>of equity mutual funds \u2014 \u201calmost double the figure on any other week on record,\u201d Felix Salmon writes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/hedge-funds-financial-risk-investments-c4670633-a373-4890-988e-58c554a3353a.html\">Axios<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Don\u2019t take the word of the ink-stained wretches alone \u2014 the umbrella group of the world\u2019s central banks agrees. <\/b>The Bank for International Settlements warned in its quarterly review yesterday \u201cthat a normalization of monetary policy is likely to trigger a flurry of sharp sell-offs over the coming months,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/12\/14\/bis-report-global-stock-market-sell-off-not-an-isolated-event.html\">CNBC<\/a> writes. While the results found you are mostly positive 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/01\/18\/what-were-tracking-on-18-january-2018\/\">they fell below last year\u2019s<\/a> survey results: 63% of respondents reported 2017 was good for business, and 83% poll takers at the time having said they expected business conditions would improve this year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/1144.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Half of all respondents think that business conditions will improve in 2019<\/b>, while 16% on the other hand expect conditions to deteriorate \u2014 more than double the number of pessimists in last year\u2019s survey.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/1158.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Fewer of you see yourselves beating the competition in 2019 <\/b>than thought the same at the end of last year. About 54% of respondents see their businesses doing better than the competition in six months\u2019 time, down from 68% in last year\u2019s survey.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/3877.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>And fewer of you expect more foreign investment coming into your industry:<\/b> 44% of you see fresh FDI in the cards for 2019, against the 65% of you who expected that foreigners would commit new capital in the year now ending.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/1445.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>So what\u2019s dampening the optimism that pervaded in 2017? <\/b>All the usual suspects were high on our readers\u2019 minds, from inflation to high interest rates, the challenge of finding top talent and government regulation. <b>The two most pressing challenges were inflation (27%) and high interest rates (19%)<\/b>, effectively unchanged from their relative rankings in last year\u2019s poll. And don\u2019t expect much a reprieve: The CBE looks on track to cut interest rates very slowly indeed as it looks to stem outflows from state debt in the new year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/736.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/613.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Interest rates are a major problem for business:<\/b> 64% of readers see the current interest rate environment as either somewhat or very negatively affecting business, on par with last year. The overwhelming majority of you see interest rates coming down some time in 2019, but 29% of readers see no change in the cards. 48% see rates falling sometime in second or third quarter of next year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/12\/3858.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Add this all up, and you seem at risk of putting investment plans on hold: <\/b>This time last year, 62% of you were certain your companies would increase their investments in Egypt over the following six months. Leaders in Malaysia and India are among those criticizing what they see as China\u2019s \u201cnew version of colonialism\u201d that has lured countries into debt traps.<\/p>\n<p><b>Analysts say this pushback marks the end of the first phase of BRI.<\/b> \u201cA new model has not yet emerged, but it is clear that the old one, almost entirely focused on speed and scale, is no longer sustainable,\u201d said German Marshall Fund Senior Fellow Andrew Small.
