We have the full interview in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <b>The EGX30 dropped 2.4% to an 18-month low yesterday<\/b>, as CIB shares slipped amid concerns over <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/11\/28\/change-in-tax-treatment-of-treasury-holdings-wont-take-effect-until-measure-passes-egypts-house-expect-more-news-today\/\">proposed amendments<\/a> to the tax code that could see banks pay more into state coffers, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/africaTech\/idAFL4N1Y93KN\">Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>US shares tumbled more than 3% yesterday and Asian shares are down this morning<\/b> \u201cas sharp declines in long-term U.S. Treasury yields and resurgent trade concerns stoked investor worries about global economic growth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/stocks-fall-as-declining-us-yields-trade-woes-knock-sentiment-idUSKBN1O402K\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The story is getting heavy coverage in the global business press, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/eb412e52-f7e3-11e8-8b7c-6fa24bd5409c\">Financial Times<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/dow-tumbles-nearly-800-points-as-trade-jitters-return-1543959007?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>What they\u2019re all going to be talking about today: <\/b>Whether the flattening (or perhaps even inversion) of the yield curve (which the FT nicely calls a \u201cwidely followed bond market barometer of economic sentiment\u201d) suggests that US economic growth is slowing \u2014 and whether a recession is in the cards. Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3c8ecccc-f7e1-11e8-af46-2022a0b02a6c\">Flattening yield curve stirs US recession fears<\/a>, which comes as Bloomberg Opinion notes that a section of the yield curve just inverted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2018-12-03\/u-s-yield-curve-just-inverted-that-s-huge\">for the first time in more than a decade.<\/a><\/p><p><b>Wait, what does any of that gibberish mean? <\/b>First, you have to know that \u201cyield\u201d on a bond is nothing more than the return on investment someone gets from buying it. A 13% yield, for example, means you get 13% return on whatever amount you sunk into the bond. And the yield curve? It\u2019s nothing more than the difference in yields between two bonds of the same quality, but with different maturity dates.<\/p><p><b>Okay, so\u2026? <\/b>Well, as the nice people at <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/articles\/810793\/whats-yield-curve-inversion-why-everyone-freaking\">The Week<\/a> tell us: \u201cUsually, yields on long-term bonds are higher than yields on short-term bonds. In that case, the difference between the two is positive. But every so often, short-term yields will overtake long-term yields, which produces a negative spread. That's when the yield curve \u2018inverts.\u2019\u201d<\/p><p><b>So why should I care if it \u201cinverts\u201d? <\/b>Because in the US at least, every time the yield curve has inverted, a recession has followed. <b>The problem: <\/b>The recession may have followed, but there\u2019s the inversion of the yield curve does nothing to tell you when, exactly, an economy may start to contract.<\/p><p><b>I am Tariff Man: <\/b>From The Donald yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/realdonaldtrump\/status\/1069970500535902208\">on Tweeter, of course<\/a>: \u201c....I am a Tariff Man. The services are similarly priced, with Uber Bus fares being around 70% cheaper than a regular Uber ride, while Careem\u2019s are fixed at 60-70% less than a regular hop with Careem.
