El Sisi held talks yesterday with US President Donald Trump, as well as Sec. of State Pompeo and White House adviser Jared Kushner (more coverage on this in today\u2019s Speed Round).<\/p><p><b>The House of Representatives will today finish its \u201ctwo-day deliberation\u201d<\/b> of the proposed constitutional amendments, <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/329715\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egypts-parliament-begins-final-deliberations-on-co.aspx\">Ahram Online reports<\/a>. House Speaker Ali Abdel Aal will then form a committee which will produce a final draft ahead of the parliamentary vote on Tuesday, 16 April.<\/p><p><b>Monthly inflation figures<\/b> are due out today. Annual headline inflation accelerated to 14.4% in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/11\/inflation-back-on-the-rise-throwing-continued-easing-cycle-to-doubt\/\">February<\/a>, up from 12.7% the previous month. In a report <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/04\/07\/imf-releases-fourth-review-of-egypts-reform-program\/\">earlier this week<\/a>, the IMF urged Egypt to take it easy with the monetary policy easing to avoid another surge in inflation.<\/p><p><b>AmCham is holding its <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/mail\/agenda10419.html\"><b>annual HR Day<\/b><\/a> at the Cairo Marriott Hotel today. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/OnlineRegistration\/newinv\/Register\/?evid=1206\">You can register here<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Other things to keep track of<\/b> in the coming days:<\/p><ul>\n<li><b>The IMF and World Bank are holding their <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/meetings.imf.org\/en\/2019\/Spring\"><b>spring meetings<\/b><\/a> on 12-14 April in Washington, DC. Finance Minister Mohamed Maait and Investment and International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr are set to attend the meetings.<\/li>\n<li><b>The UK will, theoretically, leave the European Union on Friday<\/b>, 12 April. Prime Minister Theresa May has asked for a three-month extension to 30 June. <\/li>\n<li><b>First quarter earnings season gets underway in the United States<\/b> at week\u2019s end as JPMorgan and Wells Fargo report results. The expectation, as we noted last week, is for corporate earnings in the US and Europe to fall in 1Q for the first time since 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-09\/aramco-receives-blockbuster-85-billion-demand-for-maiden-bond?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/4\/90.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><b>Orders on Aramco issuance break EM record: <\/b>Demand for Aramco\u2019s debut global bond issuance hit USD 100 bn yesterday, with fixed-income investors clamoring for yield at a time when rates on some sovereign and corporate bonds are low, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-09\/aramco-receives-blockbuster-85-billion-demand-for-maiden-bond?srnd=premium-middle-east\">reports Bloomberg<\/a>. The bonds are being marketed as \u201cin line\u201d with Saudi government bonds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8b82d9ec-5a95-11e9-9dde-7aedca0a081a\">notes the FT<\/a>, which could see Aramco\u2019s final price fall further. The huge appetite for Aramco debt may mean that plans for an IPO may be placed on the shelf for a while yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/04\/09\/the-monster-saudi-aramco-bond-offering-may-have-just-doomed-its-ipo.html\">CNBC says<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>The Israeli election was a nail-biter:<\/b> Benjamin Netanyahu looks likely to emerge victorious in a closely-fought election battle with ex-general Benny Gantz. The winner was too close to call for much of the evening, but at the time of writing it seems that Netanyahu is set to enter a fifth term in office. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/elections\/netanyahu-elections-gantz-vote-updates-results-1.7105719\">Haaretz has live updates here<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Is there a new trade war afoot?<\/b> The EU is threatening to escalate a trade dispute with Washington by introducing retaliatory tariffs on US goods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-08\/trump-responds-to-eu-airbus-subsidies-with-threat-of-new-tariffs\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. The US on Monday announced USD 11 bn in new tariffs on EU products after the WTO found the bloc to have illegally subsidized Airbus. Although the EU has not yet provided details about the proposed tariffs, Airbus claimed that it would use \u201cfar larger countermeasures against the US.\u201d<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><b>Uber\u2019s IPO preparations could be going more smoothly:<\/b> The ride-hailing company is coming under commercial and legal scrutiny as it prepares to IPO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3fee8054-575b-11e9-91f9-b6515a54c5b1\">the FT writes<\/a>. The lawsuits and investigations, as well as questions over its business model, means that investors are going to be taking on more risk than is customary for IPOs, experts tell the salmon-colored paper.<\/p><p><b>Mind-blowing science story of the day:<\/b> Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science-and-health\/2019\/4\/9\/18301980\/eht-black-hole-photo-livestream-event-horizon-telescope\">scientists will reveal<\/a>for the first time ever pictures of an actual black hole. The index has largely remained flat since January, and perspectives differ as to why \u2014 despite the US Federal Reserve\u2019s pro-growth stance and signs of a US-China trade war truce \u2014 there hasn\u2019t been an uptick.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sensitivity to global slowdown, political volatility: <\/b>Some analysts are pointing to the currency\u2019s greater sensitivity to global growth risks. Those risks are coming primarily from weak growth data in Europe, which are further exacerbated by a strong USD and China\u2019s weak output story. Others are saying political volatility in emerging markets is \u201csqueezing funding for those who want to hedge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Fund managers might have had their share of EM currencies<\/b> after a decade of easing in advanced economies \u2014 with perhaps more on the way. How applicable is it to emerging markets though? Its detractors would say that, even if developed countries with full control of their currencies were able to disregard their budget deficits, there is no way it would ever work in emerging markets where governments don\u2019t have the same fiscal capacity. Wrong, says Fadhel Khaboub, associate professor of economics at Denison University, who explains in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-08\/this-is-how-mmt-applies-to-emerging-markets\">Bloomberg podcast (runtime: 38:44)<\/a> how the MMT perspective could benefit emerging markets. Here are the key takeaways:<\/p>\n<p><b>Most developing economies lack monetary sovereignty<\/b> because they issue debt denominated in foreign currencies and\/or they peg their national currencies to foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p><b>What causes this?<\/b> Reliance on food and fuel imports, as well as exporting high value-added content and importing low value-added content.<\/p>\n<p><b>How can countries regain control over their currencies?<\/b> By reducing fuel and food subsidies, and replacing them with domestic renewable energy and locally-produced food.
