The key element of the Fed\u2019s statement (from where we sit in EM) is the central bank\u2019s outlook, where analysts will be parsing chairman Jay Powell\u2019s words for any sign there is \u201cdeep concern lurking behind [his] patient approach,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b9f48eaa-49ac-11e9-bbc9-6917dce3dc62\">FT writes<\/a> in its rundown of the four things to look for when Powell speaks this evening (CLT).<\/p><p><b>The bond market will be paying close attention this evening to<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/federal-reserve-rate-projections-could-show-greater-confidence-in-extended-pause-11552820400?mod=article_inline&amp;mod=article_inline\">Powell\u2019s statement<\/a> on how the bank will proceed with unwinding its asset portfolio. The Fed began reducing its USD 4.5 tn portfolio in 2017 \u2014 mainly made up of long-term Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities purchased post-2008 \u2014 and has signaled that it will end later this year. Some commentators say the run-down has increased market volatility, and Fed economists now face a \u201ccrucial decision\u201d about how they will balance the bank\u2019s Treasury portfolio going forward. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fed-faces-crucial-decision-on-mix-of-treasurys-in-its-portfolio-11552987920\">The Wall Street Journal has more<\/a>.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a><b> The House of Representatives will begin hearings today on proposed amendments to the country\u2019s 2014 constitution.<\/b> The hearings will continue tomorrow and then resume next week. India, the world\u2019s sixth-largest economy, will go to the polls in April, while South Africa, the continent\u2019s largest economy, will vote in May. Other notable economies heading into elections include Indonesia, Israel, Thailand and Turkey, all of which will take place over the next month.<\/p>\n<p><b>Surprises are unlikely, but never assume that the polls and political analysts are accurate<\/b> \u2014 especially with political volatility delivered by popular votes recently in developed economies and emerging markets alike. \u201cWith the way emerging markets have been moving this year, investors need to be more selective based on a variety of factors including economic fundamentals and political risks,\u201d Takeshi Yokouchi, senior fund manager at Daiwa SB Investments in Tokyo, told Bloomberg. \u201cThe expectation is for the ruling party to win in major elections such as South African and Indonesia, with [Indian PM] Modi\u2019s party also extending support recently in India, but this doesn\u2019t mean investors can remain care-free about these elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Nigeria as a case study:<\/b> A potential case study for election-induced EM volatility took place just last month when Nigeria held its presidential election.
