The central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/issues\/2019\/03\/31\/cbe-leaves-interest-rates-on-hold\/\">left rates unchanged<\/a> at its last meeting in March, after <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/02\/17\/central-bank-of-egypt-cuts-interest-rates-by-100-bps-in-first-mpc-meeting-in-2019\/\">cutting the overnight deposit and lending rates<\/a> to 15.75% and 16.75% in February.<\/p><p><b>Across the pond, the Fed is looking set to hold off on easing \u201cfor some time,\u201d <\/b>according to minutes released yesterday of the last meeting of the FOMC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed\/feds-patience-on-interest-rates-to-last-for-some-time-idUSKCN1SS2ER\">Reuters reports<\/a>. That position could come under pressure if The Donald appoints Judy Shelton to US Federal Reserve\u2019s board. Shelton is a conservative economist and former Trump campaign advisor who has been a consistent critic of the Fed. Many EM economies are dependent on exporting commodities and low-end manufacturing products to places like China \u2014 which becomes a problem when a major buyer such as China starts to reduce its orders. As the weight of Trump\u2019s tariffs cause China\u2019s exports to the US to slide, the falling Chinese demand for EM goods and commodities has accelerated. \u201cIncreasingly, EM countries are suffering the collateral damage of the trade war,\u201d Tran says, cautioning that the current headwinds are unlikely to dissipate any time soon.<\/p>\n<p><b>Funds are beginning to dump EM assets:<\/b> Since the collapse of US-China trade talks earlier this month, EM equities have fallen more than 8%, while EM equity exchange-traded funds have seen outflows of USD 10 bn over the past two weeks. Major investment banks such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etftrends.com\/relative-value-channel\/goldman-sachs-dials-back-its-exposure-to-emerging-markets\/\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-emerging-jpmorgan\/jpmorgan-cuts-emerging-markets-risk-after-us-china-trade-setback-idUKKCN1SJ0O9\">JPMorgan<\/a> have scaled back their exposure to EM assets as uncertainties over global trade continue to mount.<\/p>\n<p><b>But it could be worse:<\/b> The IMF is currently forecasting emerging markets to grow by 4.4% and emerging Asian economies by 6.3% this year. Speaking to us this week is Ayman Ismail, founder and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/schools.aucegypt.edu\/business\/aucvlab\/Pages\/default.aspx\">AUC Venture Lab<\/a>, Egypt\u2019s first university-based startup incubator and accelerator.<\/p>\n<p><b>My name is Ayman Ismail. I\u2019m an academic, educator, entrepreneur, consultant, researcher, news junkie and mentor. <\/b>Maybe the thing that really defines me is that I\u2019ve never been able to do just one single thing. I\u2019m passionate about working with people who get things done on the ground, or who are interested in learning or doing things.<\/p>\n<p><b>I have several day jobs.<\/b> I teach entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance at AUC. In that capacity, I\u2019m often asked whether you can really teach people to be entrepreneurs. My answer is that being an entrepreneur is a mixture of knowledge, skills and behavior. I can teach things that require knowledge \u2014 such as how to start and manage a business \u2014 and I can teach new skills. Behavior can\u2019t be taught, but I can raise people\u2019s awareness about their own behavior.<\/p>\n<p><b>I also do a lot of research on entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, economic development, and the policies that enable these things.<\/b> I led the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gemconsortium.org\/economy-profiles\/egypt\">Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) report<\/a>, for example. I\u2019m currently working with the Planning Ministry on an input paper for Egypt\u2019s sustainable development strategy, trying to incorporate some ideas about entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p><b>My hands-on work with entrepreneurs takes place through the AUC Venture Lab.<\/b> Much of my work involves leading, developing and designing the program, but a lot of it is also about mentoring, discussion, networking and providing support to individual entrepreneurs and startups. I also work a lot with the social entrepreneurs of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nahdetelmahrousa\/\">Nahdat El Mahrousa<\/a>, who run businesses driven by social issues.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m not a morning person. <\/b>My brain is more wired and alert at night, so that\u2019s when most of my new ideas come to me. When I\u2019m at AUC, if I\u2019m not teaching, I\u2019m talking with students or entrepreneurs, bouncing ideas around with them \u2014 the chance to engage with someone and brainstorm is the most exciting time of the day. That joint learning and exploration is probably the thing I love the most about what I do.<\/p>\n<p><b>So when I\u2019m working on anything that requires a lot of quiet focus, it\u2019s usually late at night.<\/b> The best time for me to do my long, reflective thinking is when I walk my dog late at night, when we\u2019re moving and the dog decides where we\u2019re going. It\u2019s a good chance to just think and reflect.<\/p>\n<p><b>I spend a lot of time following the news. <\/b>There are two big stories that I\u2019ve been following and thinking about a lot for the past few years and days, respectively: Trump and Huawei. I see the story of Trump as epitomizing the wave of populism currently sweeping the world, and our future in the next few decades will depend on how this wave continues moving. Similarly, the Huawei story may turn out to be a key milestone in the whole globalization narrative. It could change the course of our development, away from the global platforms we\u2019ve been working so hard to create, with implications for technology and industrial policy.<\/p>\n<p><b>The AUC Venture Lab has been running for six years, and in that time we\u2019ve supported over 150 companies. <\/b>When I came to AUC in 2011, entrepreneurship was really nascent in Egypt, and my mandate was to expand the entrepreneurship footprint.<\/p>\n<p><b>Half of the companies we\u2019ve supported have been funded through angel investment or venture capital,<\/b> with the total investments approaching EGP 1 bn. That figure is admittedly skewed by the success of a star: <a href=\"https:\/\/swvl.com\/\">Swvl<\/a>. But this is typical in the world of startups. We\u2019ve also mobilized hundreds of mentors, faculty members, students and partners to be engaged with us and learn more about entrepreneurship. And we\u2019ve established a program \u2014 the first of its kind in the region \u2014 specifically to support fintech. It\u2019s currently in its fourth year.<\/p>\n<p><b>What do I do in my free time? Honestly, I\u2019m not sure what free time means.<\/b> I love reading, and I used to read a lot, but nowadays I read a lot of different things in a slightly fragmented way. The luxury of reading a long novel doesn\u2019t really exist anymore.<\/p>\n<p><b>One person I find very inspiring on a business and a personal level is <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DByuo1UBiW0\"><b>Jack Ma<\/b><\/a><b>, co-founder of Alibaba.<\/b> He\u2019s very interesting, grounded, with quite a bit of sarcasm in the way he speaks. He\u2019s passionate about what he does and he knows which values he cares about. At the same time, he\u2019s very adaptive.<\/p>\n<p><b>Staying organized and on top of things is a challenge. <\/b>We have a serious communication overload, and with that comes fragmentation. You get hundreds of messages every day on lots of different channels, and just managing all of these could be a full time job. The challenge and the most important thing is to figure out what your absolutely essential priorities are, and to focus on them, even if there are other things you would also really like to be involved in. Perhaps <b>the most difficult thing to master is not feeling guilty about the things you aren\u2019t able to do<\/b>.
