We have the full rundown in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>Meanwhile, the global stock sell-off has ensured Uber and Jumia spent another day in the dog house. <\/b>Uber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-uber-stock\/uber-shares-fall-for-second-day-after-ill-fated-ipo-idUSKCN1SJ1EW\">fell nearly 11%<\/a> as it slid again on its second day of trading, leaving the ride-hailing app\u2019s shares down nearly 18% since it went public last week. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/uber-technologies-stock-ipo-ceo-draws-on-facebook-amazon-starts-2019-5-1028196183\">reassured staff<\/a> that everything will be okay.<\/p>\n<p><b>Jumia (and the very notion of consumer-focused tech in Africa) got a kick in the teeth from the FT\u2019s <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4b14a76c-7581-11e9-be7d-6d846537acab\"><b>influential Lex column<\/b><\/a> yesterday. The column took note of a short-seller Citron\u2019s claims that Jumia misled investors on customer and merchant numbers and hid the fact that \u201c41% of its deliveries were either returned, not delivered or canceled,\u201d as we <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/12\/what-were-tracking-on-12-may-2019\/\">noted earlier this week<\/a>. The vulnerability \u2014 which still hasn\u2019t been patched \u2014 allowed spyware to be installed via WhatsApp voice call whether you answered the call or not, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4da1117e-756c-11e9-be7d-6d846537acab\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Beijing was reacting to Washington\u2019s decision last week to impose new duties on some USD 200 bn worth of Chinese imports.<\/p>\n<p><b>The EGX30 closed down 1.5% yesterday<\/b> in moderately heavy trading (by Ramadan standards) \u2014 total turnover came in at EGP 686 mn, or about 43% higher than the average since 2 May. US markets had their worst day of the year so far, with the S&P 500 down 2.4% and Nasdaq off 3.4%. European markets also closed in the red yesterday, while <b>the FTSE All World Index was off 1.9%<\/b>, sliding to its lowest level since March.<\/p>\n<p><b>Asian shares were still sliding at dispatch time this morning in heavy trading<\/b>, with equities in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand all in the red.<\/p>\n<p><b>Emerging-market currencies got whacked:<\/b> The MSCI EM currency index fell 0.5% to its lowest level since January early yesterday morning on concerns about what the trade dispute could mean for global economic growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a0e18046-7551-11e9-bbad-7c18c0ea0201\">the FT reported<\/a>. And JPMorgan shifted its position on EM currencies to a small underweight in response to the breakdown in talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/emerging-jpmorgan\/jpmorgan-cuts-emerging-markets-risk-after-u-s-china-trade-setback-idINKCN1SJ0OF\">Reuters says<\/a>. \u201cA change of course in trade negotiation is against consensus and <b>warrants reducing EM risk further given overweight positions<\/b>,\u201d analysts said in a note.<\/p>\n<p><b>The \u201cfear index\u201d jumped 30% yesterday. <\/b>The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, \u201ctends to rise when stocks are falling and is one of several measures showing that heightened jitters are creeping through markets, with investors expecting big swings ahead,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fear-flares-up-as-investors-brace-for-more-market-volatility-11557772677?mod=hp_major_pos19\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> noted. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley\u2019s chief equity strategist (who correctly called the global equities sell-off of last year) says the state of affairs between the US and China has <b>increased the likelihood of a prolonged economic downturn<\/b> \u2014 and, possibly, of a recession, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-13\/recession-bell-rings-in-trade-spa\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Keep an eye on the robots:<\/b> As we <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/13\/what-were-tracking-on-13-may-2019\/\">noted yesterday<\/a>, there is a risk that \u201ccomputer driven funds [that] amassed big equity positions while markets were sleepy\u201d could suddenly be \u201cscrambling to sell their stocks and move into safer assets like treasuries\u201d now that market volatility is back on the menu. Micro-sized enterprises employing fewer than five people far outweigh SMEs in Egypt, making up more than 92% of all businesses and employing 58% of the country\u2019s labor force, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/enterprise.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AFDB-Addressing_informality-in-Egypt.pdf\">2016 report<\/a> by the African Development Bank.<\/p>\n<p><b>Almost all of these businesses are informal:<\/b> They are unregistered, operate without licenses or permits, and use cash for most of their transactions. In comparison, <b>SMEs account for just 7.9% of businesses<\/b> and provide a quarter of the country\u2019s jobs, while large businesses constitute just 0.1% of business and account for 17% of employment. This lop-sided private sector is what Adly calls the \u201cmissing middle syndrome\u201d: A situation where a small group of very large companies exist alongside a vast number of micro businesses and a largely-absent SME sector. (For context, the concept isn\u2019t new: It was popularized in Egyptian policymaking circles by the Finance Ministry as led pre-2011 by Youssef Boutros Ghali)<\/p>\n<p><b>Building trust:<\/b> One of the main obstacles to formalizing micro businesses is the lack of trust between the state and the private sector, Adly says. Developmental programs currently struggle to work with micro business owners, many of whom are wary of giving information to the state for fear of taxation and corruption. To overcome this, governments and donors should work to build stronger links between micro businesses and the government, the banking sector and special funds. Creating locally-based development associations would enable the government to simultaneously gather information, provide technical and financial assistance, and build trust. It\u2019s all designed to counter the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.is\/media-centre\/press-releases\/first-for-industry-as-actis-publishes-open-source-impact-measurement-framework\/\">baffling array of unverified, opaque and incompatible metrics<\/a>\u201d provided by the industry, to help impact investors make informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p><b>Building investor trust should encourage greater inflows:<\/b> With impact investing assets under management <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privateequityinternational.com\/impact-investments-assets-break-half-a-trillion-mark-giin-report\/\">estimated<\/a> at USD 502 bn held by over 1,340 organizations worldwide, there\u2019s no question that money is available.
