That\u2019s what Beltone\u2019s Alia Mamdouh suggests <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2019\/5\/2731.pdf\">in a report (pdf)<\/a> out yesterday. \u201cFavorable global conditions, with the ease in monetary tightening, will continue to provide the buffer for the CBE to resume its monetary easing [in May]. Meanwhile, the most likely scenario for us will remain a 100 bps cut in rates by the end of the year, accounting for the expected inflationary repercussions of the wider implementation of the fuel indexation mechanism.\u201d<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <b>Market watchers are paying close attention to the opening bell in Europe and the US of A today <\/b>as traders try to get their heads around what\u2019s in store for global equities after recent events including the sudden heating up of the US-China trade war. <b>Asian shares are <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-12\/yen-advances-yuan-slips-as-trade-war-escalates-markets-wrap?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><b>edging lower<\/b><\/a>this morning and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/sp-stock-futures-fall-asian-stocks-slip-as-u-s-china-trade-tensions-simmer-idUSKCN1SI0QO\">futures suggest<\/a> the <b>S&amp;P will open <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/13\/us-markets-react-to-china-trade-war-news-and-more.html\"><b>200 points lower<\/b><\/a> in New York this afternoon.<\/p><p>The result? Early signs this morning that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-12\/markets-watch-for-china-blowback-as-trump-turns-up-heat-on-trade?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><b>traders are scrambling for safe havens<\/b><\/a>.<\/p><p><b>All of this is bad news for emerging markets\u2026 <\/b>\u201cThe standoff between the U.S. and China is back at the top of emerging-market investor concerns as they assess how far they should price in a full-blown trade war,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-12\/trade-war-tops-emerging-market-worries-again-as-skepticism-grows?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> suggests<\/p><p><b>\u2026but good news for our future robot overlords: <\/b>There are concerns that \u201ccomputer driven funds [that] amassed big equity positions while markets were sleepy\u201d could suddenly be \u201cscrambling to sell their stocks and move into safer assets like treasuries\u201d now that market volatility appears to be back on the menu, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/volatility-could-cause-more-pain-as-funds-betting-on-quiet-sell-down-stocks-11557658823\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> warns.<\/p><p><b>You know who\u2019s looking particularly prescient right now? Deutsche Bank<\/b>, which warned at the end of 2018 that <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/stock-market-risks-2019-deutsche-bank-2018-12-1027830481\">an algorithm-driven fire sale in equities and credit<\/a> would be the biggest risk to global markets this year.<\/p><p><b>How bad could it get? <\/b>JPMorgan has previously suggested that there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2018-10-24\/jpmorgan-warns\">USD 7.4 tn in stocks that would be \u201csubject to forced selling<\/a> by passive funds during the next downturn.\u201d<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p>In our diary for the rest of the week:<\/p><ul>\n<li><b>The Egyptian Private Equity Association is having its annual sohour<\/b> tomorrow. Chosen banks will be among those with the highest holdings of government debt and whose systems align best with Euroclear, the official said. Infrastructure such as transport, hospitals, schools and power currently receive just 0.9% of national output in emerging markets, down from 3.3% in 1997, the data indicates. This is raising fears in policy circles that growing infrastructure gaps could stifle the development of emerging economies. \u201cWhether you look at [public investment] in gross or net terms you are talking about a decline,\u201d Paolo Mauro, deputy director of fiscal affairs at the IMF, told the FT. \u201cThis is something that should be reversed. Emerging economies, as they develop, need to build infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Egypt isn\u2019t over-investing in infrastructure \u2014 in fact, we\u2019re not yet investing enough:<\/b> The World Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/12\/12\/egypt-faces-usd-230-bn-investment-gap-in-infrastructure-and-most-of-it-is-in-transportation\/\">said last year<\/a> that Egypt\u2019s infrastructure gap is set to grow to USD 230 bn over the next 20 years. The country\u2019s transport sector will require an extra USD 145 bn in the coming two decades while water infrastructure will need a further USD 45 bn. Putting this into perspective, total investment into transportation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/_layouts\/15\/WopiFrame.aspx?sourcedoc=%7B57495E8A-C262-4DC5-AE65-09768115AC42%7D&file=Investment_Annual.xls.xlsx&action=default\">FY2016-17<\/a> came in at around USD 3 bn, USD 1.9 bn of which came from the state and USD 1.1 bn from the private sector. Just USD 339 mn was invested into water infrastructure that year, none of which came from the private sector. The World Bank recommended priorities including seeking USD 10 bn worth of investment for the nation\u2019s railways and USD 10 bn for refinery upgrades.<\/p>\n<p><b>Global targets:<\/b> IMF figures estimate that EM governments are required to put a further 4.1% of GDP (USD 2.06 tn) into public investment each year until 2030 in order to perform well against the UN\u2019s development goals.
