The event, designed to facilitate Japanese investment on the African continent, will wrap up tomorrow. We have full coverage of the day's events in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p><p><b>The previous six iterations of Ticad haven\u2019t done much for Japan,<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/43bdefd2-82f6-11e9-a7f0-77d3101896ec\">the FT notes<\/a>. Tokyo has struggled to grow exports to the continent, foreign direct investment has expanded only marginally, and India and the UAE have overtaken it in terms of trade volumes.<\/p><p><b>This time, they\u2019re not messing around:<\/b> For this year\u2019s Ticad, the Japanese government has set up a permanent council with corporations in a more determined effort to increase investment. This, as well as the dwindling investment options at home, has analysts optimistic that Japanese investors will finally begin stepping up their involvement in Africa.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aef9b1e2-c90e-11e9-a1f4-3669401ba76f\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1494.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><b>The outlook on US corporate profits is taking a turn for the worse on the back of trade tensions with China<\/b>, with analysts\u2019 earnings expectations dropping to a three-year low, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aef9b1e2-c90e-11e9-a1f4-3669401ba76f\">according to the Financial Times<\/a>. Previous expectations that S&amp;P 500 companies will see their earnings jump 7.7% have been scaled down to 2.4%. \"With global growth slowing sharply, and domestic activity cooling, further profit weakness represents a risk for business investment and hiring \u2014 a key support to consumer spending,\" says Oxford Economics senior economist Lydia Boussour.<\/p><p><b>Yield on 30-yr US treasuries hits record low:<\/b> Investors continued to move into long-term US sovereign debt yesterday, sending the rate on 30-year US treasuries falling to record lows. The yield dropped to a historic low of 1.907% before recovering slightly to close at 1.933%. The falling yield comes despite the US and China sounding positive notes this week over trade talks, suggesting continued concern among investors over the US economy\u2019s short-term prospects.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-28\/investors-slam-on-brakes-in-emerging-markets-as-risks-escalate\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/2735.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <b>The tables are turning on high-yield EM debt: <\/b>Anxiety over a looming economic slowdown has EM investors playing it safe, especially as US-China trade talks fall through and the Argentinian market dives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-28\/investors-slam-on-brakes-in-emerging-markets-as-risks-escalate\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. High-yield USD-denominated debt in emerging markets is expected to lose 4% of its value this month after having recovered since the beginning of the year following a tough 2018, Bloomberg Barclays indexes showed. Winning though are the low-yield bonds, which are expected to reach their highest recorded gains this August.<\/p><p><b>We might be on the cusp of a rally in gold prices as investors are piling into the lower-risk assets<\/b>, CitiGroup says, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-28\/citi-sees-a-bullish-break-for-gold-as-s-p-500-feels-the-strain?srnd=premium-middle-east\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. UBS Group AG is also bullish on the metal, saying gold could hit USD 1,650 \u201cas central-bank easing spurs flows into bullion-backed exchange-traded funds,\u201d the news information service says. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/28\/gold-is-up-but-so-is-economic-performance\/\">In Egypt<\/a>, gold prices are expected to rise to EGP 800 per gram by the end of next month.<\/p><p><b>Bad news for natural gas producers \u2014 prices are at their lowest ever<\/b> amid a supply glut mainly driven by the US, where exports have surged from around the 20 bcf mark in 2016 to around 130 bn this year. A widely used European price for LNG has dropped to nearly USD 3, from around USD 9 just a year ago. This is fairly disastrous for the US domestic market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-glut-in-natural-gas-supply-goes-global-11566907200\">the WSJ reports<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/01\/egypt-wants-to-almost-quadruple-the-value-of-natural-gas-exports-to-usd-2-bn-in-fy2019-2020\/\">given our ambitious plans for LNG exports<\/a>, it isn\u2019t great news for us either.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><b>Tadawul falls as Saudi stocks join MSCI:<\/b> A sell-off in Saudi bank stocks caused the Tadawul to fall 1.4% yesterday after the second batch of shares were added to the MSCI EM Equity Index, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL5N25O1QJ\">Reuters says<\/a>. The market has long priced in the effects of the upgrade, limiting the chances of an immediate post-inclusion boost in stocks. The Institute of International Finance said yesterday that joining the MSCI and FTSE indices has helped the Tadawul to attract USD 18 bn in foreign inflows this year. The second phase of inclusion will see another USD 5 bn of equity inflows, it said. The weighting of Saudi shares on the MSCI index rose to 2.8% from 1.45% after the second batch was added yesterday.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2021\/5\/473.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p><p><b>Trump\u2019s Mideast peace plan delayed (again):<\/b> The US will not unveil the political part of its Mideast peace plan before Israel\u2019s elections in September, Trump\u2019s Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt has announced. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/27\/el-sisi-meets-trump-johnson-and-macron-at-g7-summit\/\">Trump said<\/a> on Monday that the long-delayed plan could be revealed prior to the elections, an idea that has received support within the Israeli government. But Greenblatt appears to have ruled that out, writing \u201cWe have decided that we will not be releasing the peace vision (or parts of it) prior to the Israeli election,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jdgreenblatt45\/status\/1166728342852251648\">on Twitter<\/a> yesterday.<\/p><p><b>Boris Johnson deploys the nuclear option:<\/b> UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has suspended parliament for five weeks in an attempt to block MPs from preventing a hard exit from the European Union. Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg defended the controversial move as a \u201ccompletely proper constitutional procedure,\u201d but MPs from both sides of the political aisle denounced it as a Soussa tells the news information service that Egypt\u2019s cooling inflation also means that real interest rates stand out among regional and emerging market peers. Investing in long-term bonds \u201ctends to be a bit more sticky, but the liquidity in the Egyptian market has improved to the extent that our clients are now able to trade in and out of those trades and it makes it much more attractive,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><b>10-year yields fall 87 bps:<\/b> Average yields on 10-year treasuries fell to 14.682% in an auction yesterday, down from 15.551% in an auction earlier this month, CBE data shows. provision of nuclear technology to countries throughout Africa, part of efforts to shore up its influence in the continent, has attracted criticism for being unsuitable and unlikely to benefit the continent\u2019s poorest people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/aug\/28\/russia-pushing-unsuitable-nuclear-power-in-africa-critics-claim\">Jason Burke writes in the Guardian<\/a>. The light-water technology used by companies like Rosatom, which is building Egypt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/12\/13\/egypt-to-receive-first-tranche-of-russian-loan-for-dabaa-in-january-sources\/\">USD 30 bn Dabaa nuclear power plant<\/a>, typically generates more power than most African countries have the infrastructure to distribute. Critics argue that large projects designed to distribute electricity over national grids \u2015 which are absent in many African countries \u2015 will perpetuate the exclusion of those who already lack access to energy.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Ruskies using energy for influence is not unlike China\u2019s use of the Belt and Road Initiative<\/b> in Africa and Asia for the same goal. Of Africa\u2019s 54 countries, 39 have signed on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egypttoday.com\/Article\/1\/68016\/China-s-BRI-boosts-Egypt-s-development-via-massive-infrastructure\">Beijing\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative, including Egypt<\/a>, which is partnering with China on massive infrastructure projects in construction, energy, transport, trade and industry. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9f5736d8-14e1-11e9-a581-4ff78404524e\">thousands of Chinese entrepreneurs<\/a> have poured into the continent, running some 10k companies and working in fields that include retail, factories and farming. As economic ties grow, so do military and diplomatic ones. The BRI has also been raising eyebrows for luring developing countries into debt traps, with some countries even going as far as describing the Chinese initiative as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/12\/17\/chinas-belt-and-road-initiative-sparks-backlash-across-asia\/\">new version of colonialism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Some criticism is fair, but there\u2019s a reason Moscow and Beijing are welcome in Africa.<\/b> Russia and China clearly both want to make strategic and economic gains through their relationships in Africa.
