Three-quarters of economists <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/18\/enterprise-poll-cbe-could-cut-interest-rates-on-thursday\/\">surveyed by Enterprise this week<\/a> see the central bank easing (with most anticipating a 100 bps cut). A <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/investingNews\/idAFKCN1VA0LH-OZABS?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=investingNews\">Reuters poll<\/a> yesterday showed that 10 out of 13 economists expect the bank to ease: seven see a 100 bps cut, three expect a more aggressive 150 bps cut, while three think it will leave rates on hold. The MPC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/02\/17\/central-bank-of-egypt-cuts-interest-rates-by-100-bps-in-first-mpc-meeting-in-2019\/\">last cut interest rates<\/a> in February, when the overnight deposit and lending rates were reduced by 100 bps to 15.75% and 16.75%, respectively.<\/p><p><b>How will a cut affect the EGX?<\/b> Shuaa Securities\u2019 sees a 79% chance that the EGX is positive one month after the meeting if the CBE cuts rates.<\/p><p><b>The private sector needs at least a 300 bps cut to resume capex borrowing<\/b>, says Monette Doss, banking analyst at HC Securities\u2019 equity research department, citing bank surveys. Our poll of nine companies across several industries <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/13\/businesses-eager-for-interest-rates-to-return-to-pre-float-levels-to-boost-investment\/\">earlier this year<\/a> found that businesses are waiting for interest rates to fall within pre-float levels of 10-13% before ramping up capex borrowing. HC Securities sees this happening before the end of next year, with 100\u2013200 bps worth of cuts coming in 2H19 and another 200-300 bps in 2020. This would fully reverse the 700 bps of rate hikes enacted since 2016.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-economy-yieldcurve\/u-s-yield-curve-invert-steepen-repeat-idUSKCN1VA11G\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/2288.png?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><b>Investors are hoping the US can avoid a recession now that the yield curve is steepening<\/b>, but \u201chistory indicates that the reprieve may be brief, before a more sustained, severe flip occurs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-economy-yieldcurve\/u-s-yield-curve-invert-steepen-repeat-idUSKCN1VA11G\">Reuters says<\/a>. US Federal Reserve officials are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/19\/what-were-tracking-on-19-august-2019\/\">gathering at Jackson Hole<\/a> this week and could cause the yield curve to invert once again if Fed boss Jay Powell indicates that the central bank is not \u201cfully on board for an all-out rate-cutting mode, which would drive short-term rates higher.\u201d<\/p><p><b>All this talk of the inverted yield curve has apparently caused a spike in Google searches on what exactly the term means<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-bonds-yieldcurve\/inverted-what-searches-for-obscure-financial-term-spike-on-google-idUSKCN1VA12V\">according to the newswire<\/a>. The MSCI EM Equities Index inched 0.2% higher following movements in global equities. The banks have already started work on the listing, and will help to select the underwriters, identify suitable markets, and ensure that the company is valued in line with expectations. The IPO was originally scheduled to take place last year but the company put it on hold prioritizing instead its purchase of Saudi chemicals giant Sabic. Aramco now intends to list as early as 2020, although sources say plans could yet be delayed.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><b>Are shorter working hours the key to bringing more women into banking?<\/b> European banking and asset management organizations, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afme.eu\/\">Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME)<\/a> and the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theia.org\/\">Investment Association<\/a>, are discussing a proposal to reduce stock market trading hours in a bid to attract more women to the sector, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/02c02be8-c294-11e9-a8e9-296ca66511c9\">the Financial Times reports<\/a>.
