August to review key interest rates.<\/b> Our <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/18\/enterprise-poll-cbe-could-cut-interest-rates-on-thursday\/\">poll on Sunday<\/a> showed three-quarters of economists predicting that the central bank will cut rates for the first time since February.<\/p><p><b>Another case for a rate cut: <\/b>Beltone\u2019s Alia Mamdouh, who was absent from our Sunday poll, expects inflation to remain within the CBE\u2019s target of 9% (+\/-3%) for the remainder of the year, giving the MPC room for a 100 bps cut on Thursday. \u201cWe believe no further fuel price hikes will take place when prices are reviewed in September due to a strengthening EGP and falling global crude prices,\u201d Mamdouh said, adding that the US Federal Reserve\u2019s recent cut will also give the CBE more room to ease rates. She also downplayed the risk of outflows from Egyptian debt, suggesting that the strong EGP and higher real interest rates will continue to make treasuries attractive post-rate cut.<\/p><p><b>And Goldman is also predicting a 100 bps cut<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-18\/suffering-emerging-markets-look-to-powell-to-calm-frayed-nerves\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will be in France next week to attend the G7 Summit,<\/b> which will run from Sunday to Tuesday in Biarritz.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1896.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <b>All eyes on Jackson Hole:<\/b> Federal Reserve officials will gather in Jackson Hole later this week for the annual economic symposium \u2014 and marker watchers will be hanging on Chairman Jay Powell\u2019s every word as he speaks for the first time since the bond market <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/15\/us-recession-indicator-flashes-red-as-weak-economic-data-triggers-global-stock-sell-off\/\">last week showed warning signs of a recession<\/a>. His words will be closely scrutinized for indicators of whether the recent market volatility will persuade the Fed to embark on a full-scale easing cycle, and even restart its crisis-era bond-buying program. Powell\u2019s captioning of last month\u2019s 25 bps cut as a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/01\/what-were-tracking-on-1-august-2019\/\">\u201cmid-cycle adjustment\u201d<\/a> marked the start of a volatile August in the financial markets as hopes for a more aggressive easing cycle faded.<\/p><p><b>Economists think Powell will keep his cards close to his chest:<\/b> Powell is likely to remain tight-lipped on the direction of US interest rate policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/investors-might-be-disappointed-in-feds-message-from-jackson-hole-2019-08-16\">economists tell MarketWatch<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>That could be a risky strategy though:<\/b> A failure to provide concrete signals will disappoint the markets and runs the risk of reigniting volatility, James Bianco, president of Bianco Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/17\/stocks-will-tumble-if-fed-doesnt-get-more-aggressive-james-bianco.html\">told CNBC<\/a>. \u201cWe could see another plunge in rates. We could see further movement down in yields and the yield curve and more volatility and problems in the markets. He should move aggressively,\u201d he said.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-18\/suffering-emerging-markets-look-to-powell-to-calm-frayed-nerves\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/438.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><b>Any sign of easing could help EMs claw back losses:<\/b> \u201cPolicy action, including from the Fed, and natural cyclical forces should eventually help activity to recover,\u201d an emailed note from Morgan Stanley analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-18\/suffering-emerging-markets-look-to-powell-to-calm-frayed-nerves\">seen by Bloomberg<\/a> said. \u201cEM risk assets tend to overshoot and undershoot fair value, with particularly large downside moves in the May-to-October time frame,\u201d they said, adding that lower valuations and more time would be needed before inflows pick up.<\/p><p><b>Kudlow appears on Trump TV to quash economic fears:<\/b> \u201cI don\u2019t see a recession at all,\u201d Trump\u2019s top economic official Larry Kudlow told Fox News yesterday (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gYXidH0mkAY\">watch, runtime: 12:32<\/a>), citing strong retail and unemployment figures. It\u2019s probably worth bearing in mind, though, that this is Larry Kudlow: the guy who wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/kudlows-money-politics\/bush-boom-continues-larry-kudlow\/\">\u201cthere\u2019s no recession coming\u201d<\/a> six months before the biggest economic catastrophe this side of the Great Depression.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <b>Tech IPOs are no longer as appealing and profitable as an investment prospect as they once were<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/todays-tech-ipos-offer-lower-growth-for-top-dollar-11566050580\">the Wall Street Journal says<\/a>. \u201cUnlike during the dot-com era, when very young companies went public, many of today\u2019s IPOs have been making losses for years. With age comes slowing growth.\u201d These companies are also \u201cmore aggressively priced than their predecessors.\u201d Part of the issue here is the delay in contemporary tech companies going to market versus in previous years, because they have access to VC funding and other private market sources, and shareholders tend to favor mergers or acquisitions to an IPO.<\/p><p><b>Softbank Group is lending some USD 20 bn to employees so they can buy stakes in its second giant venture-capital Vision Fund<\/b>. The step is highly unusual and potentially risky, especially given the state of the global startup economy. With Softbank also contributing USD 38 bn to the fund itself, it could cumulatively make up more than half the money raised, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/softbank-to-lend-founder-and-employees-billions-to-invest-in-fund-11566051247\">the WSJ reports<\/a>.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><b>Suicide bomber targets wedding party in Kabul;<\/b> At least 63 people died and 182 others were injured after a suicide bomber targeted a wedding party in Kabul on Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/av\/world-asia-49385763\/suicide-bomber-targets-kabul-wedding\">BBC reports<\/a>. The local branch of Daesh later <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/b5ceb0cfb33d4d73aaaadf5eee19fe9d\">claimed responsibility<\/a> for the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital this year, which targeted an area with a significant Shia Hazara community. The Argentinian peso lost a fifth of its value against the USD and the country\u2019s main stock market crashed 48% in a single day, after the election increased the likelihood that the pro-market Macri will lose October\u2019s presidential vote.<\/p><p><b>Is the European Union next in Trump\u2019s sights?<\/b> The Donald railed against EU trade policy at a rally in New Hampshire last Thursday, telling the crowd: \u201cThe European Union is worse than China, just smaller. have come together to form Climate Action 100+<\/b>, a group that works to \u201cput pressure on companies to do the right thing\u201d when it comes to the environment. The group targets significant emitters of greenhouse gases and companies with large carbon footprints, such as BP, Shell, and coal producer Glencore. And since they\u2019re shareholders, Espiner points out, they can exert considerable pressure, but that\u2019s not to say they\u2019ve found success with every attempt. And last week <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/15\/us-recession-indicator-flashes-red-as-weak-economic-data-triggers-global-stock-sell-off\/\">the alarm began to ring again<\/a>, setting off fevered speculation in the financial press about whether the US economy is about to sink into a recession. For those of you who don\u2019t know what an inverted yield curve is and why you should care about it, the Economist\u2019s Wall Street correspondent Alice Fulwood is on hand to explain (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oW4hfaiXKG8\">watch, runtime: 4:15<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><b>Put in the simplest possible terms:<\/b> The yield curve is a graph which measures the returns investors receive from government bonds with different maturities. The x-axis measures time, and the y-axis the interest rate (or yield) received on each bond. It is typically upward-sloping, indicating that bonds with longer maturities have a higher interest rates. This is because investors would, under normal circumstances, demand higher returns for locking up their cash for longer periods of time. If prevailing economic expectations take a turn for the worse, the interest rates on longer-term bonds can fall below those on short-term bonds, causing the curve to become downwards sloping.
