Luckily \u2014 or rather unluckily, depending on which way you look at it \u2014 international events are giving us a lot to talk about.<\/p>\n<p><b>We\u2019re exactly one week away from the Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s next Monetary Policy Committee meeting.<\/b> Whether or not the MPC decides to move ahead with a rate cut remains unclear: Last month\u2019s inflation readings could give the central bank some breathing room to cut rates, but macro conditions \u2014 including Argentina\u2019s historic stock market crash earlier this week \u2014 could push the CBE to hold off on resuming its easing cycle until the storm has passed.<\/p>\n<p><b>And if yesterday\u2019s anything to go by, the CBE might be wise to hold fire:<\/b> The bond markets sounded the alarm for an oncoming US recession yesterday as poor data out of Germany and China heightened fears of a global slowdown. Global financial markets closed in the red, as the dreaded inverted yield curve in US treasuries reared its ugly head. We cover yesterday\u2019s events in detail in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/82c4d584-bce3-11e9-89e2-41e555e96722\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1449.jpg?ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Concerned about the whole \u2018negative yield\u2019 situation everyone is talking about in the financial press?<\/b> So is Neil Macdonald, writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/opinion\/negative-rates-1.5244661\">Canada\u2019s CBC<\/a>. Macdonald reacts \u2014 as everyone watching the markets rightly should \u2014 with incredulity to the increasing numbers of investors paying to hold sovereign and corporate debt. And he asks an unnerving question to which very few people at the commanding heights of the global economy seem to have an answer: what, exactly, is the plan for when the next global downturn fully unfolds? The world\u2019s systemic central banks have very little room to cut interest rates while remaining in positive territory. And if a move towards widespread negative rates is indeed the plan, just how low can they go before people begin pulling money out of the banking system? \u201cWe are in unknown territory, out past the \"here be monsters\" sign. None of us has any idea how this will turn out, economists included,\u201d he writes ominously.<\/p>\n<p><b>Putting negative rates in perspective:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/82c4d584-bce3-11e9-89e2-41e555e96722\">The FT<\/a> is out with a series of charts illustrating the current state of play with central bank policy rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-14\/deflation-holds-fast-in-abu-dhabi-with-housing-pressuring-most?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1989.jpg?ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Deflation in Abu Dhabi accelerates in July:<\/b> The deflationary trend in Abu Dhabi entered its second month in July after consumer prices fell 1.4% y-o-y, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-14\/deflation-holds-fast-in-abu-dhabi-with-housing-pressuring-most?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. This is the biggest drop for at least four years, and the sixth in the past seven months. Falling housing, water and electricity prices were primarily responsible. \u201cIn the foreseeable future, it is hard to see the housing sector bottoming out, given current market conditions,\u201d Mohamed Bardastani, senior economist at Oxford Economics, told Bloomberg. \u201cA mismatch in the supply and demand curve and weak employment numbers have weighed down on housing prices, and that is the case in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Saudi Arabia will need to push for more substantial production cuts<\/b> at the December Opec+ meeting amid a sustained slump in oil prices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b5d7b784-bdbf-11e9-b350-db00d509634e\">David Sheppard writes in the FT<\/a>. The stakes for the kingdom are high: prices need to exceed USD 60 a barrel if state oil giant Saudi Aramco is to come close to reaching USD 2 tn when its long-awaited IPO takes place. To do this another 1 mn barrels a day \u2014 approximately 1% of the global supply \u2014 will need to be removed from the market. And as 2020 is due to bring both a global oil surplus and a promise from Donald Trump to slash prices as part of his electoral campaign, the window for action is rapidly closing.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><b>Silicon Valley VC meets traditional private equity:<\/b> Japan\u2019s SoftBank is preparing to host a meeting between its Vision Fund portfolio companies next month in the hopes of creating an \u201cecosystem\u201d of tech companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a47ec59a-bd15-11e9-b350-db00d509634e\">the FT says<\/a>. The strategy \u2014 part Silicon Valley venture capital, part private equity \u2014 aims to increase collaboration between portfolio companies to boost growth and returns. The USD 100 bn Vision Fund, launched back in 2017, is comprised of various tech companies operating across seven different sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/huawei-technicians-helped-african-governments-spy-on-political-opponents-11565793017?mod=hp_lead_pos5\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/609.jpg?ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Surprising to absolutely noone:<\/b> Chinese tech giant Huawei is assisting African governments to spy on political rivals, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/huawei-technicians-helped-african-governments-spy-on-political-opponents-11565793017?mod=hp_lead_pos5\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> investigation has shown. The technology company, the most prominent in Africa, allegedly hacked into devices owned by political opponents of the Ugandan and Zambian governments, allowing them to intercept encrypted communications and track their movements. \u201cThe big question has been whether Chinese companies are just doing this for the money, or whether they\u2019re pushing a specific kind of surveillance agenda,\u201d digital surveillance expert Steven Feldstein said.<\/p>\n<p><b>What are the chances of Huawei surveillance in Egypt?<\/b> Egypt is one of the 13 African governments to purchase surveillance equipment from the company, in addition to hosting a Huawei office. Egypt also joins South Africa as the only two countries to be working with the company to install 5G infrastructure. Little is known about the extent of Chinese surveillance in the country, with the WSJ\u2019s investigation shedding little light on countries outside Uganda and Zambia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1974.jpg?ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>China ratchets up rhetoric on Hong Kong protests:<\/b> Protests in Hong Kong have reached \u201cnear terrorism,\u201d the Chinese government said yesterday after demonstrators attacked people they accused of being government sympathizers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-hongkong-protests\/china-likens-protesters-to-terrorists-hong-kong-airport-reopens-idUSKCN1V32AA\">Reuters reported<\/a>. The US has warned travelers visiting the city after 10 weeks of violence have led to the country\u2019s worst political crisis since 1997. A Chinese spokeswoman also accused US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of inciting further unrest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/14\/china-accuses-pelosi-and-mcconnell-of-inciting-chaos-in-hong-kong.html\">CNBC noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In international miscellany:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Tunisia approves 26 candidates for September election:<\/b> Tunisia\u2019s electoral commission has whittled down a list of 71 applicants to stand in the 15 September presidential election to just 26, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20190814-tunisia-commission-presidential-candidates-elections-caid-essebsi\">France24 reports<\/a>. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, former PM Mehdi Jomaa, and VP of Ennahda Abdel Fattah Mourou are among the approved candidates. Financial markets recoiled yesterday as poor German and Chinese data provided further evidence of a global economic slowdown. US and European equities were slammed while a bond rally in the US pushed yields on 10-year treasuries below two-year rates for the first time since 2007, raising fears of a US recession.<\/p>\n<p><b>Germany is on the cusp of a recession:<\/b> The German economy contracted in the second quarter as domestic manufacturers struggled to cope with declining global conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destatis.de\/EN\/Themes\/Economy\/National-Accounts-Domestic-Product\/Tables\/domestic-product--q-gdp.html#fussnote-2-57054\">Data released<\/a> by the Federal Statistics Bureau yesterday showed that output fell by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter from 0.4% growth in the first quarter of the year. Poor data from the country\u2019s export-dependent industrial and manufacturing sectors had raised fears of an oncoming recession in recent weeks as global trade disputes continued to escalate. Manufacturing PMI <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/25\/what-were-tracking-on-25-july-2019\/\">fell to seven-year lows<\/a> last month, and industrial output <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/08\/what-were-tracking-on-8-august-2019\/\">contracted unexpectedly<\/a> by 1.5% in June. \u201c[Yesterday\u2019s] GDP report definitely marks the end of a golden decade for the German economy, ING analyst Carsten Brzeski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-germany-economy-gdp\/shrinking-german-economy-on-edge-of-recession-as-exports-stutter-idUSKCN1V40HT\">told Reuters<\/a>. \u201cTrade conflicts, global uncertainty and the struggling automotive sector have finally brought [it]... down on its knee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>China industrial output hits 17-year low:<\/b> Industrial growth in China fell to levels not seen since 2002 in July, official data showed yesterday. Figures published by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.gov.cn\/english\/PressRelease\/201908\/t20190814_1691072.html\">National Bureau of Statistics<\/a> revealed that industrial growth fell to 4.8% y-o-y in July, down from <a href=\"http:\/\/data.stats.gov.cn\/english\/easyquery.htm?cn=A01\">6.3% in June<\/a>. Analysts said that the weak data points to falling demand across the broader Chinese economy, and some are now forecasting renewed stimulus measures. \u201cThe economy is going to continue to slow down. At a certain point, policymakers will have to step up stimulus to support infrastructure and property. I think it could happen by the end of this year,\u201d Macquarie Group\u2019s Larry Hu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-economy-activity\/chinas-economy-worsens-in-july-industrial-growth-at-17-year-low-as-trade-war-escalates-idUSKCN1V404X\">told Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>US and European equities are in the red:<\/b> Major US stock indices were down 3% at the close of play yesterday: both the Dow and the Nasdaq fell 3%, with the Dow shedding 800 points, and the S&P 500 fell 2.9%. European stocks fared slightly better \u2014 although that\u2019s not exactly saying much: the German Dax lost 2.2%, and both the Euro Stoxx 50 and the French CAC 40 sank 2%. The sell off spread to Asia in the early hours of this morning, with all major indices down at least 1.3% as of 04:00 CLT. \u201cInvestors are increasingly selling first and asking questions later,\u201d Alec Young, managing director for global markets research at FTSE Russell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-13\/stocks-to-rally-in-asia-on-tariff-delay-relief-markets-wrap?srnd=premium-middle-east\">told Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cThe only thing seemingly capable of reversing the volatility is credible evidence global growth is bottoming out. That seems too much to hope for right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>The bond market is now signalling a US recession:<\/b> The US treasury yield curve inverted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-14\/u-k-yield-curve-inverts-for-first-time-since-financial-crisis\">the first time since 2007<\/a> yesterday as investors seeking safe haven assets caused the yield on US 10-year treasuries to fall below the two-year rate. The yield on 10-year notes fell to 1.623% early in the day, below the 1.634% rate on two-year bonds, before recovering later on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/13\/us-bonds-yield-curve-at-flattest-level-since-2007-amid-risk-off-sentiment.html\">according to CNBC<\/a>. The rate on 30-year bonds also fell to a record low of 2.02%. The curve between two-year and 10-year bonds has proven to be an accurate predictor of recessions in recent history, becoming inverted before almost every recession over the past 50 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>But not this time, says Yellen:<\/b> Former Fed chair Janet Yellen tried to calm market fears yesterday, telling <a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxbusiness.com\/v\/6072934847001\/#sp=show-clips\">Fox Business Network<\/a> that an inverted yield curve does not guarantee a recession. \u201cHistorically, it has been a pretty good signal of recession, and I think that\u2019s when markets pay attention to it, but I would urge that on this occasion it may be a less good signal,\u201d she said. \u201cThe reason for that is there are a number of factors other than market expectations about the future path of interest rates that are pushing down long-term yields\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Global banks are being hit hard:<\/b> MSCI\u2019s total return index of developed market bank stocks plummeted to near-record lows against the wider benchmark yesterday as inverted yield curves in the US and UK raised investor fears that banks will begin restricting credit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-14\/bond-armageddon-pummels-global-banks-as-recession-panic-swirls\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. \u201cBond yields are pricing in Armageddon,\u201d said Roelof Salomons, chief strategist at Kempen Capital Management NV. \u201cThe concern is that lower rates will keep economies and corporates afloat but such policy hurts banks\u2019 profitability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>And Trump has predictably weighed in on social media<\/b>, once again aiming fire at US Fed chairman Jay Powell: \u201cOur problem is not with China\u2026 Our problem is with the Fed. Raised too much & too fast. Now too slow to cut\u2026 Spread is way too much as other countries say THANK YOU to clueless Jay Powell and the Federal Reserve.
