The e-payments platform\u2019s retail component, which covered 35.4 mn shares, closed earlier this week around 30x oversubscribed. The retail tranche covered 5% of the company\u2019s shares. Fawry also sold 21.2% to strategic investors as part of a pre-agreed transaction: State-owned banks Banque Misr and the National Bank of Egypt were both offered 7% stakes, while EM PE giant Actis was offered 7.2%. The remaining 9.8% was allocated in a private placement to institutional investors, which closed 15.9x oversubscribed.<\/p><p><b>The CBE could release July\u2019s inflation figures today.<\/b> Inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/11\/egypts-inflation-rate-in-single-digits-for-first-time-since-march-2016-cbe-still-expected-to-hold-rates\/\">unexpectedly plummeted<\/a> almost five percentage points to 9.4% in June \u2014 the first time Egypt has seen single digit inflation since March 2016. While some research houses have lowered their overall projections for the year, it is widely expected that we see inflation in July rise on the back of last month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/07\/government-raises-fuel-prices-phasing-out-remaining-fuel-subsidies\/\">cuts to fuel<\/a> and electricity subsidies.<\/p><p><b>Higher inflation means a rate cut will be highly unlikely:<\/b> Investment banks are expecting the Monetary Policy Committee to keep interest rates on hold when it meets on Thursday, 22 August.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3f72a6a0-b854-11e9-96bd-8e884d3ea203\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/160.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <b>Markets catch their breath after two days of turmoil:<\/b> US equities closed in positive territory and a rally in government bonds ran out of steam yesterday despite rising concerns over global growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8f861680-b8af-11e9-8a88-aa6628ac896c\">says the Financial Times<\/a>. US stocks fought back after a 2% drop soon after trading opened. The S&amp;P 500 closed up 0.08% and the Nasdaq gained 0.38%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished slightly in the red, down 0.09%.<\/p><p><b>European stocks also managed to recover after a rough start,<\/b> but \u201csafe haven assets\u201d remained in demand, with both gold and the Japanese yen extending their yearly gains. Germany\u2019s Dax, France\u2019s Cac 40 and the UK\u2019s FTSE 100 all ended in the green.<\/p><p><b>But \u201cscary\u201d German industrial output figures stoke recession fears:<\/b> Fresh industrial figures in Germany showed a larger-than-expected drop in output. \u201cThe continued plunge in production is scary,\u201d Bankhaus Lampe economist Alexander Krueger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-germany-economy-industrial-output\/scary-german-output-figures-propel-recession-fears-idUSKCN1UX0JQ\">told Reuters<\/a>. \u201cThe longer this continues, the more likely it is that other sectors of the economy will be dragged into this.\u201d<\/p><p><b>And so it begins:<\/b> Several central banks cut interest rates yesterday, signalling that perhaps we\u2019re entering a new phase of sustained global easing. New Zealand first surprised markets with a \u201cbigger-than-expected\u201d cut, followed by an out-of-the-blue easing by the Bank of Thailand and an unconventional 35 basis point cut by the Reserve Bank of India, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-07\/india-delivers-rare-35-basis-point-cut-to-spur-economy?srnd=premium-middle-east\">says Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Markets breathe a sigh of relief, however short-lived: <\/b>While markets did breathe a sigh of relief when China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-06\/yuan-fixing-in-focus-after-china-named-currency-manipulator\">stepped in<\/a> Tuesday to stabilize the yuan, signs that investors are becoming increasingly downbeat about growth prospects are showing. Germany\u2019s yield curve has hit its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-07\/germany-s-yield-curve-flashes-stark-warning-on-global-economy?srnd=premium-middle-east\">flattest level<\/a> since the financial crisis, signalling that the global bond market is sounding the alarm that... [it won\u2019t last] much longer before a recession strikes.\u201d<\/p><p><b>One analyst is getting a little over-excited:<\/b> While many marketwatchers are now predicting a correction, one analyst is going full apocalypse with his forecast. Nomura strategist Masanari Takada is warns that a second market sell-off at the end of August could be \u201cLehman-like\u201d in its devastation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/06\/nomura-a-second-market-sell-off-could-be-lehman-like.html\">CNBC reports<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Is the party over in Asian EMs:<\/b> EM currencies and bonds have lost about 2% since Trump\u2019s tariff announcement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-08-07\/play-it-safe-in-emerging-asia-markets-sell-on-any-relief-rally?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. Although the decline in Asia currencies eased yesterday, it still isn\u2019t looking particularly good: South Korea\u2019s won hovered near a three-year low Wednesday, while the Indonesian rupiah, the Philippine peso and Malaysian ringgit also dropped.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxbusiness.com\/v\/6068552852001\/?playlist_id=3166411554001#sp=show-clips\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/8\/1198.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p><p><b>The trade war is increasingly becoming about \u201cthe weaponization\u201d of policy tools<\/b>: \u201cWe\u2019re seeing that with trade, now we\u2019re going to see it on currency,\u201d markets sage and Allianz chief economic advisor Mohamed El Erian told Fox Business on Tuesday, a day after the US labelled China a currency manipulator (<a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxbusiness.com\/v\/6068552852001\/?playlist_id=3166411554001#sp=show-clips\">watch, runtime: 7:21<\/a>). \u201cIf you look at the strict definition of currency manipulator, China is not there,\u201d El Erian said.<\/p><p><b>We need to see fairer trade, fiscal expansion, and more \u201cstructural pro-growth policies,\u201d <\/b>El Erian says. This number has almost trebled since October 2018 when USD 5.7 tn of government debt was trading at negative yields. Rates plunged this week as fears of a global economic recession grew and central banks stepped up monetary easing. There are now <a href=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2019\/08\/06\/financial-world-gone-nuts-15-trillion-negative-yielding-debt\/\">12 countries<\/a> whose 10-year notes yield negative rates, while Irish, Spanish and Portuguese 10-years \u2014 countries that just a few years were mired in sovereign debt crises \u2014 are barely above 0%.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s with the negative yields?<\/b> Bond prices have surged this month as tanking stock prices cause investors to flee to safe haven assets. This has caused yields to plunge in many developed economies: the greater demand for bonds, the higher the price and the lower the yield. This, however, has happened many times before, without causing yields to drop into negative territory. What makes this time different has to do with over a decade of loose monetary policy in advanced economies: the huge bond-buying programs launched in the aftermath of 2008 and years of near-zero (or sub-zero as is the case in Japan and the Eurozone) deposit rates have placed huge downwards pressure on yields. And with further easing almost guaranteed in the US and the Eurozone, yields can be expected to fall even further.<\/p>\n<p><b>Why would investors pay to hold government debt?<\/b> First and foremost, a willingness to actually pay governments to borrow money evidences a growing desperation among investors for protective assets. At a time when the global economy looks increasingly likely to tip into a recession, many are exiting riskier asset classes in search of safety \u2014 even if that means paying for the privilege. Secondly \u2014 and perhaps counterintuitively \u2014 it is actually possible to generate a profit from a negative-yielding bond should its price continue to rise. Markets are increasingly confident that it is only a matter of time before the world\u2019s major central banks restart their bond-buying programs, providing additional incentive for investors to hold onto their bonds in the hope of realising a profit.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div class=\"tags-section\">\n        <div A few key predictions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>We are likely to become increasingly egocentric:<\/b> The rise of immersive tech will allow us to engage in formerly social experiences without ever having to leave our homes with the help of virtual reality devices.<\/li>\n<li><b>We will all but lose the ability to take care of ourselves:<\/b> Automation, connectivity and the desire to create a \u201cpersonalized\u201d experience means we\u2019ll never again be left to do something as onerous as making an unassisted decision about what to wear (your mirror can help with that) or how much to eat (your kitchen will monitor your food intake).<\/li>\n<li><b>Big Brother will always be watching:<\/b> Shopping will involve a lot of facial recognition and tracking for increasing personalization, while smart homes will track how much energy each occupant is burning, along with who enters and leaves the house.
