El Sisi, who has been in New York for two days in the run-up to the gathering, also met with US President Donald Trump yesterday and delivered a speech on Egypt\u2019s universal health coverage at a high-level meeting. We have the full rundown in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>The UN headquarters saw no shortage of discussions on climate change this week<\/b>, with high-profile Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg railing against world leader at the UN Climate Action Summit yesterday for their failure to take action on global warming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-climate-change-un\/teenager-thunberg-angrily-tells-u-n-climate-summit-you-have-stolen-my-dreams-idUSKBN1W81HO\">according to Reuters<\/a>. And that\u2019s to say nothing of her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/sep\/23\/greta-thunberg-trump-stare-video-moment-un-summit\">\u201csteely look\u201d<\/a> at The Donald, who in words and deeds is one of the world\u2019s top climate-change deniers.<\/p>\n<p><b>A total of 87 multinationals with a combined market cap of USD 2.3 tn have committed to a campaign to keep global warming below 1.5\u00b0C<\/b>, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/\">UN Global Compact<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/129151c0-dc87-11e9-9743-db5a370481bc\">Financial Times reports<\/a>. The initiative, which launched earlier this year, requires signatory companies to set independently verified targets and create decarbonization plans within two years to start reducing their emissions.<\/p>\n<p><b>CIB has made a pledge along the same line, promising make climate action and sustainability \u201ccentral to its business\u201d <\/b>as it joined a coalition of 130 banks worldwide representing over USD 47 tn in assets,\u201d according to a statement released yesterday. The statement emerged from the launch of the Principles for Responsible Banking, touted as the \u201cbeginning of the most significant partnership to date between the global banking industry and the UN.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/enterprise.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/CIB-PR-UNEP-Principles-of-Responsible-Banking-E-v1.pdf\">Learn more in CIB\u2019s statement here (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Back at home, the central bank\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee will meet on Thursday to review key interest rates.<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/22\/enterprise-poll-central-bank-of-egypt-could-cut-interest-rates-again-this-week\/\">Seven of the eight economists we surveyed<\/a> expect the CBE to cut interest rates by 50-150 bps on the back of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/11\/egypts-headline-inflation-falls-to-six-and-a-half-year-lows-in-august\/\">unexpectedly low inflation figures in August<\/a>. Naeem Brokerage told us yesterday it\u2019s expecting a 150 bps cut on the back of potentially lower inflation in September. The firm also cited a high real interest rate and a favorable base effect. Earnings growth, while falling, remains higher than it was in 2015, and a recent spike in corporate bond spreads was not dramatic enough to ring the alarm bells. And although industrial output in developed countries looks to have dipped in the second quarter, it is so far no worse than the downturns in 2012 and 2015-2016, Slater says. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c4294876-daf1-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17\">The Financial Times<\/a> has more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10a85b94-dbbd-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/9\/1683.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>But asset managers remain pessimistic:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10a85b94-dbbd-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17\">The FT has picked up<\/a> a survey by Absolute Strategy Research (ASR) that found that <b>52% of global asset managers believe that a downturn is likely<\/b> within the next year due to trade and geopolitical instability. They stand to gain from getting hired by companies eyeing direct listings, who would typically divide fees on fewer advisors.<\/p>\n<p><b>Softbank moves to oust WeWork parent CEO: <\/b>Adam Neumann, co-founder of WeWork and the CEO of its parent We Company, is being pressured by board members and investors to step down and opt for a different role in the future of the communal workspace startup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-wework-neumann-exclusive\/exclusive-we-company-ceo-neumann-starts-talks-on-his-role-at-wework-parent-sources-idUSKBN1W81RG\">reports Reuters<\/a>. The benchmark EGX30 fell another 1.5%, extending a sell-off that saw the index <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/23\/egx-has-worst-day-since-2016-after-weekend-protests\/\">shed 5.3% on Sunday<\/a>. Steel companies were among the hardest hit, with Egyptian Iron & Steel down 7.0% and Ezz Steel off 6.3%. Orascom Investment Holding was the day\u2019s biggest loser, shedding 7.3%.<\/p>\n<p><b>Margin calls exacerbated selling pressure<\/b>, Naeem Brokerage\u2019s Allen Sandeep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-23\/egypt-s-stocks-may-face-bumpy-week-after-protests-bring-sell-off\">told Bloomberg<\/a>, noting that local investors began dumping shares after selling by Arab investors triggered a round of margin calls.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lest we forget, the EGX has been one of the best performing indexes this year: <\/b>\u201cIt should be still kept in mind that EGX 30 is one of the global outperformers\u2026 the reason for the outperformance being strong structural reforms undertaken by the government,\u201d Century Financial\u2019s Arun Leslie John said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Egyptian USD bonds, ETF dropped:<\/b> The 2049 USD bond dropped 3.1 cents to 106.1 cents in the USD, and the 2040 bond fell 1.9 cents to 96.7 cents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/egypt-markets-eurobonds\/egyptian-dollar-bonds-slip-on-protests-pound-weakens-in-fx-forward-market-idUSL5N26E1GA\">Reuters reported<\/a>, citing Refinitiv data. Egypt\u2019s domestic and external bonds \u201cmay come under some pressure in the coming days,\u201d Goldman Sachs said. The VanEck Vectors Egypt Exchange-Traded Fund (EGPT), the only Egypt ETF trading in the US, dropped 6.2% yesterday \u201cand broke below both its short- and long-term trendlines at the 50- and 200-day simple moving averages,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etftrends.com\/equity-etf-channel\/egypt-etf-plunge-amid-political-unrest-rising-protests\/\">according to ETF Trends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Meanwhile, the 12-month non-deliverable forwards on the EGP spiked<\/b> to 18.38 to the greenback from yesterday\u2019s spot rate of EGP 16.29, marking the biggest rise since March 2017, <a href=\"http:\/\/bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-23\/egypt-s-status-as-an-emerging-market-darling-under-threat?srnd=premium-middle-east\">according to Bloomberg<\/a> \u2014 meaning the market sees the EGP coming under pressure in the period ahead.<\/p>\n<p><b>The unrest shouldn\u2019t affect foreign inflows into Egyptian debt as real interest rates remain competitive<\/b> compared to other EM and developed countries, Monica Malik, chief economist at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Is there more to this than just protests?<\/b> Protests this past weekend coincided with a number of factors that have combined to increase market volatility, Shuaa Securities\u2019 head of research, Amr Elalfy, wrote in a note yesterday. Rates on Egypt\u2019s five-year credit default swaps have risen sharply since the attacks on Saudi Aramco\u2019s oil facilities last week, which historically has negatively correlated with share prices. Stocks have also been de-rated in light of last week\u2019s appreciation of the EGP and forecasts for continued strengthening before the end of 2019.<\/p>\n<p><b>Either way, a new round of sustained protests is unlikely to do much good for the economy<\/b>, Jason Tuvey, senior EM economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note yesterday. \u201cPast experience suggests that this would be disruptive for the economy and government efforts to quell unrest, such as fiscal loosening and keeping a tight grip on the currency, could fuel a renewed build-up of macro imbalances.
