While the decision came in line with market expectations, it also highlighted growing dissent within the Fed on its monetary policy moving forward: One committee member wanted to push through a deeper cut, while two wanted to keep rates where they were. \u201cSometimes the path ahead is clear, and sometimes less so,\u201d Fed Chair Jerome Powell said at a presser following the meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7416987a-da38-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17\">according to the Financial Times<\/a>. \u201cThis is a time of difficult judgments, as you can see, disparate perspectives. He succeeds <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/11\/what-were-tracking-on-11-september-2019\/\">John Bolton<\/a>, who was fired by Trump last week.<\/p>\n<p><b>Meanwhile, Saudi, Iran, and the US are still in a war of words over Aramco attack:<\/b> The attacks on Saudi Aramco\u2019s Abqaiq facility were \u201cunquestionably sponsored by Iran,\u201d Saudi Arabia\u2019s Defense Ministry spokesman Turki al-Maliki <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/9fb95c0d28c84fd0bf10817dea3ddaab\">said in a news conference yesterday<\/a>. While he stopped short of directly accusing Tehran of launching the assault, al-Maliki said that evidence from drones and cruise missiles launched in the assault show they could not have come from inside Yemen. Iran continues to deny any involvement in the attack, and told the US it would retaliate immediately if Tehran was targeted in response. Houthi rebels, meanwhile, have reiterated their claim of responsibility. And the country\u2019s biggest customers in Asia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6d22dbf4-d921-11e9-8f9b-77216ebe1f17\">have indicated<\/a> that they are considering diversifying their supplies of oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/index-funds-are-the-new-kings-of-wall-street-11568799004\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/9\/788.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>The robot takeover cometh for Wall Street: <\/b>Index-tracking funds are beating their actively-managed rivals for the first time on Wall Street,according to the Mornigstar data, which nonetheless only \u201ccovers a slice of the mutual fund and ETF world,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/index-funds-are-the-new-kings-of-wall-street-11568799004\">says the WSJ<\/a>. Broad US equity-tracking funds recorded USD 4.27 bn in assets on 31 August, surpassing the assets of funds \u201cthat try to beat the market,\u201d which had USD 4.25, according to the data. This shift is turning the likes of BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street Corp into power brokers and prompting concerns the \u201cmarket-mimicking funds\u201d could distort stock prices.<\/p>\n<p><b>The case for central bank-backed digital currencies:<\/b> Having central banks back digital currencies would be a very good step towards preventing outdated financial regulations to stifle financial innovations, writes Vikram Pandit in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a450f6c6-d622-11e9-8d46-8def889b4137\">an opinion piece for the Financial Times<\/a>. He argues that current financial regulations were drawn up in the 20th century, and are unsuited for new financial innovations, including digital and crypto-currencies. The regs cover a variety of regulatory procedures, including registration, licensing, taxes and social insurance \u2014 stipulating that all licensed ride-hailing companies must show their drivers are meeting their social insurance payments in accordance with the law. Uber and Careem have both been incorporating white cab drivers into their fleets.<\/p>\n<p><b>Background<\/b>: We\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/05\/08\/parliament-looks-to-smother-ride-hailing-in-the-baby-crib-by-approving-an-even-worse-version-of-the-ride-hailing-apps-act\/\">previously noted<\/a> that companies will be required to pay up to EGP 30 mn to acquire the license to receive a five-year operating license. Meanwhile, ride-sharing drivers must pay up to EGP 2,000 (up from EGP 1,000) for an annual license to work through the companies, and will pay taxes 25% higher than those imposed on cab drivers. Companies will also be required to pay a one-off fee to legalize their status. The law stipulates that this fee must be lower than the cost of the operating license. Speaking to us this week is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/aly-el-shalakany-a6aa0b31\/\">Aly El Shalakany<\/a>, Senior Partner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shalakany.com\/\">Shalakany<\/a>, one of Egypt\u2019s largest and oldest corporate law firms.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m Aly El Shalakany, Senior Partner at Shalakany<\/b>, Chairman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cairoangels.com\/\">Cairo Angels<\/a> and President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainmena.com\/\">Middle East Angel Investment Network (MAIN)<\/a>. I\u2019m married to my wonderful life partner and best friend Vanessa Lehmann, soon to be Frau Dr. Lehmann.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m a corporate lawyer specialized in finance, M&A, and projects with a particular sector focus on energy and infrastructure.<\/b> I\u2019m also a very active angel investor who invests in, mentors and coaches early stage startups and scaleups. And I\u2019m on the board of several companies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mornings are important for setting my frame of mind for the rest of the day.<\/b> I usually wake up around 6:30 am, crawl out of bed, brush my teeth, and then go for a run or go rowing on the Nile for about an hour. I used to find it impossible to even think about exercising in the morning, but now I find it so refreshing, and it really impacts my mood and energy levels for the entire day. When I\u2019m back from my workout, I get showered and dressed, have breakfast and coffee with my wife and then walk to work. Due to the nature of my job, I usually can\u2019t make it home for dinner, so our main meal and quality time together is over breakfast, which is fantastic.<\/p>\n<p><b>Unless I have an early morning appointment, the very first thing I do is go through my emails and update my to-do list.<\/b> I\u2019m one of those annoying people who have zero emails in their inbox, with everything filed away neatly. Once that\u2019s done, it\u2019s time to read my favorite business publication, which is Enterprise of course.<\/p>\n<p><b>I try to keep the more intellectually demanding work that requires strong focus for early in the day,<\/b> and then schedule calls and meetings for later. I have lunch every day at 2 pm and, unless I\u2019m with a client, I almost always eat with my lunch crew at our wonderful cafeteria at work. I think getting a mental break and a healthy lunch is crucial for me to go the distance in the second part of my day, so I find it hard to understand how some people skip this meal or just snack through it.<\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s impossible for me to pick a favorite movie or TV series.<\/b> I recently saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3750872\/\">\u201cThe Wife,\u201d<\/a>starring Glenn Close, and it was a gut-wrenching reminder of how women suffer because so many men are intimidated by strong women.<\/p>\n<p><b>I read so much news and non-fiction for work that, in my leisure time, I try to stick to fiction.<\/b> I made a promise to my wife to learn German and I\u2019ve been true to my word, so I\u2019ve only been reading detective novels \u2014 or Krimis \u2014 in German for the past few months. So weit, so gut.<\/p>\n<p><b>Shalakany is one of the oldest law firms in Egypt and the Middle East,<\/b> set up by my great-grandfather over a hundred years ago. Our real take-off point was in the 1970s, when the Egyptian economy opened up under Sadat and started welcoming investment and private sector participation. We\u2019ll do the more commoditized legal work, but only if it\u2019s something that our client needs to complement what we\u2019re really good at, which is the work that requires in-depth knowledge and skill.<\/p>\n<p><b>A recent example is the<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/11\/gth-finishes-paying-usd-136-mn-settlement-to-tax-authority\/\"><b> Veon Global Telecom Holding tax settlement and transaction<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b>This took over three years, and we had our M&A, capital markets, disputes, tax and insolvency partners all working in parallel. Half the firm worked weekends at some point on this transaction alone, but in the end, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/12\/shalakany-acts-as-lead-counsel-in-global-telecom-tax-authority-dispute\/\">we got the job done<\/a>. We\u2019re very proud of this kind of work, because we can really flex our muscles \u2014 and in our business, that\u2019s the very best way to showcase what your firm is all about.<\/p>\n<p><b>There\u2019s so much that people don\u2019t understand about the corporate legal sector.<\/b> The image they often have from TV shows like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1632701\/\">\u201cSuits\u201d<\/a> is very charming, but in reality, there\u2019s a lot less drama and a lot more hard work. It\u2019s also very surprising that people often think that all lawyers are ready to turn their hand to any legal problem. It\u2019s an honor to be in a position of trust, so I don\u2019t take it badly, but it does get tiring after a while. After all, you don\u2019t ask a surgeon for advice every time you have a backache, do you?<\/p>\n<p><b>Legal technology will be a game changer for the industry.<\/b> I read a lot and attend many conferences about what the law firm of the future will look like. The legal market is already being disrupted by tech, and this will be more acute in the coming decade. Lawyers like to think that the industry is immune from this development, but it couldn\u2019t be further from the truth. In 20 years, our business operations will, in many respects, be unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p><b>I strongly believe in the work-life balance,<\/b> and try to spend as much time as possible with family and friends. My wife and I try to carve out enough quality time to do fun things together, like experiencing new food, shows, theater, and as much traveling as we can. We\u2019re both big believers in the importance of family, and prioritize spending time with our parents and siblings. This mindset applies to our friends too, and we really try our best to invest in those relationships.<\/p>\n<p><b>I also love sports, and do a mix of things three to four times a week.<\/b> And I\u2019m a massive Arsenal fan \u2014 which has been really tough over the past 10-15 years \u2014 but they\u2019re my team and I will never abandon them, no matter how miserable they may make me on most weekends.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019ve had many inspiring mentors in my life and throughout my career.<\/b> Many of my co-investors and the founders I work with in my angel investing keep me sharp and are sources of inspiration and learning. But if I had to single out one important life lesson above all others, I would start with what I learned from my parents. My mother and father both taught me that if you want to be successful, you have to earn it the hard way through application and hard work. You can\u2019t blame others if something doesn\u2019t go your way.
