CLT<\/a><\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Foreign reserves:<\/b> The Central Bank of Egypt is due to release Egypt\u2019s net foreign reserves figures for August this week.<\/li>\n<li><b>Inflation:<\/b> Monthly inflation figures for August at due out next week. Inflation <b><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/14\/egypts-headline-inflation-falls-to-four-year-low-in-july-despite-subsidy-cuts\/\">fell unexpectedly<\/a><\/b> to a four-year low of 8.7% in July.<\/li>\n<\/ul><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><b>Digital transformation of the MENA healthcare sector is coming<\/b>, but digitization and raising public awareness will take time, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chefaa.com\/\">Egyptian pharmacy locator Chefaa<\/a> Rasha Rady <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wamda.com\/2019\/09\/egyptian-startup-encouraging-pharmacies-online\">tells Wamda<\/a>. While the sector has a lot of room for innovation, persuading pharmacies to agree to companies\u2019 commission fee structure has proved a challenge. \u201cIt\u2019s important that all stakeholders in [the] healthcare sector understand that it was never about the cost, but it\u2019s all about being cost-effective,\u201d Rady says. The <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/TWEXB\">trade-weighted USD index<\/a> hit record highs in August despite the Federal Reserve\u2019s 25 bps rate cut in July, with the USD gaining against all but one EM currencies. That tends to be a tough environment for emerging markets.\u201d<\/p><p><b>Trade war continues to take its toll on China\u2019s economy:<\/b> Business activity in China\u2019s manufacturing sector contracted for the fourth consecutive month in August, <a href=\"http:\/\/data.stats.gov.cn\/english\/swf.htm?m=turnto&amp;id=1\">PMI data showed on Saturday<\/a>.<\/p><p><b>Investors are beginning to lose their nerve as Brexit turmoil ratchets up:<\/b> Investors have pulled USD 4.2 bn from UK equity funds since <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/29\/el-sisi-holds-post-brexit-trade-talks-with-uk-trade-secretary\/\">Theresa May announced her resignation<\/a> as prime minister in late May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e9ed11e0-7fb4-35ec-b2d2-1cfc09fec50a\">the Financial Times reports<\/a>. Google\u2019s threat analysis group found that a number of malicious websites had been used to hack potentially thousands of users each week. Apple became aware of the software flaw in February and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT209520\">had it fixed on the down-low,<\/a> but not before hackers had access to iPhone users\u2019 text messages, photos, and locations. The forecast for the current fiscal year is much more modest than <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/20\/house-committee-approves-fy2019-2020-draft-budget\/\">the government\u2019s target<\/a>of 6.0% outlined in the state budget. According to the EIU, measures to balance the tough reform program with \u201ccontaining public discontent,\u201d including raising public sector wages, will weigh on Egypt\u2019s fiscal position, but tax revenues will improve public finances over the next four years \u201cin tandem with robust GDP growth.\u201d The report expects Egypt\u2019s fiscal deficit to narrow to 6.0% of GDP by FY2022-2023, from 9.5% in FY2017-2018 on the back of lower spending on subsidies and higher tax revenues. \u201cThe current account will move into surplus from 2021, owing to lower oil import costs in the second half of the forecast period and as export growth outpaces import growth.\u201d Inflation, meanwhile, is expected to average 11.8% this fiscal year before gradually cooling to 7.5% by FY2022-2023.<\/p>\n<p><b>Economic, fiscal, and regulatory reforms are expected to continue past the end of the IMF program<\/b>, the EIU says, \u201calthough business-related structural reforms will proceed slowly owing to opposition from vested interests within state bodies.\u201d The report also notes that it does not expect Egypt to seek further funding from the IMF to support the remainder of its reforms. Finance Minister Mohamed Maait <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/26\/egypt-hopes-to-reach-a-non-loan-program-agreement-with-imf-before-october\/\">had said in June<\/a> that Egypt is in talks with the IMF over a non-loan program and is hoping to reach a final agreement by next month.<\/p>\n<p><b>The report identifies a few \u201cmajor risks\u201d to Egypt\u2019s economic outlook<\/b>, with a slowing pace of socially sensitive reforms due to concerns about popular unrest seen as a high probability risk with a high impact. Here in Egypt, the yield curve has been inverted since the EGP float in November 2016. But in contrast to the prophecies of doom we\u2019ve come to expect in the US, nobody in Egypt so much as bats an eyelid at the fact that the yield on Egyptian 10-year treasuries is currently almost 140 bps below that on 2-years. We could put this down to normalization, but in the immediate aftermath of the currency float <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/12\/08\/egypts-bond-market-points-to-slower-inflation-asset-prices-to-appreciate-in-the-future\/\">Bloomberg was describing the inversion<\/a> as a \u201cwelcome signal\u201d from the bond market that \u201cvindicates Egypt\u2019s decision\u201d to devalue the EGP.<\/p>\n<p><b>An inverted yield curve isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing:<\/b> Shuaa Securities\u2019 Esraa Ahmed wrote yesterday that the inverted curve \u201cconveys a positive perception\u201d among bond traders of the inflationary trend and the central bank\u2019s accommodative monetary policy. It reflects market expectations for continued easing, a path that signifies the central bank\u2019s growing confidence in the economy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Yields are on a downward trend:<\/b> Rates have fallen more than 300 bps across the board since the beginning of the year as foreign investors piled into Egyptian debt. Unexpectedly low inflation readings and the appreciating EGP have also contributed to the strong downward pressure on yields, Ahmed says.<\/p>\n<p><b>But the curve is unlikely to flatten anytime soon:<\/b> It may be a while before yields on long-term bonds normalize and rise above short-term treasuries. The curve has actually steepened since the CBE cut rates last month: In the first auctions after the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/25\/central-bank-of-egypt-cuts-interest-rates-for-the-first-time-since-february\/\">150 bps rate cut<\/a>, yields on 10-year bonds fell further than rates on short-term t-bills.
