Discussions were had on trade and investment, the Russian Industrial Zone and the resumption of Russian flights to Sharm (no breakthrough there \u2014 we have more on President El Sisi\u2019s meeting with Putin in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below).<\/p>\n<p><b>So, will El Sisi and Abiy Ahmed meet today? <\/b>Heading into the summit we weren\u2019t quite sure what the schedule was for the president\u2019s anticipated meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Tension on that front ratcheted up earlier this week when Ahmed said that Ethiopia could mobilize \u201cmns\u201d in the event of war with Egypt. It\u2019s unsurprising, then, that there was nothing but radio silence on the GERD front.<\/p>\n<p><b>Also still an open question: Will Ethiopia accept Washington\u2019s offer to mediate<\/b> the dispute? Egypt suggested yesterday that it would accept the invitation to talks with Ethiopia and Sudan in the US capital, but there\u2019s been radio silence on the Ethiopian front.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p>A couple of quick event-related notes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairowaterweek.eg\/\"><b>Cairo Water Week<\/b><\/a> wraps up today, as does the <a href=\"http:\/\/platforms-root-technologies.com\/icec-2019\/\"><b>Intelligent Cities Exhibition & Conference<\/b><\/a> at the Hilton Heliopolis.<\/p>\n<p><b>The IMF and AUC will be holding a discussion on the World Economic Outlook <\/b>on Tuesday, 29 October from 1-3pm at Moataz Al Alfi Hall on AUC\u2019s New Cairo campus. The talk, headlined \u201cWorld Economic Outlook: Global manufacturing downturn, rising trade barriers\u201d will be presented by Gian Maria Milesi-Ferretti, deputy director at the IMF\u2019s research department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-22\/saudi-arabia-comes-back-to-bond-market-with-a-2-5-billion-sukuk\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/10\/536.png?ssl=1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Capitalizing on low borrowing costs, Saudi eyes USD 2.5 bn sukuk issuance: <\/b>Saudi Arabia is planning a USD 2.5 bn sukuk (sharia-compliant bonds) issuance as the kingdom looks to capitalize on borrowing costs hitting their lowest level in four years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-22\/saudi-arabia-comes-back-to-bond-market-with-a-2-5-billion-sukuk\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. The 10-year notes will be priced somewhere between 145 and 150 bps over the benchmark mid swap rate, a source familiar with the matter tells the news information service. The issuance should be enough to cover Saudi\u2019s funding requirements to plug its budget deficit.<\/p>\n<p>Other international stories worth knowing about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Lebanon faces \u201ccash crisis\u201d:<\/b> Protests in Lebanon have forced banks to close for the past six days, raising concerns over a potential bank run when they eventually open, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/23\/lebanon-protests-fears-of-a-cash-crisis-as-banks-remain-shut.html\">CNBC says<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>US to lift sanctions on Turkey:<\/b> President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">announced yesterday<\/a> that the US will lift sanctions on Turkey \u201cunless something happens that we\u2019re not happy with,\u201d as a ceasefire between Turkey and Kurdish militia in northern Syria continued to hold. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-50152235\">Russian troops rolled into Syria yesterday<\/a>, Trump declared that the US should \u201clet someone else fight over this long blood-stained sand\u201d and said that troops will now exit the country (forgetting to mention that the US is evidently still willing to fight over <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/10\/21\/kurdish-oil-fields-syria-us-trump\/\">Syria\u2019s oil fields<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><b>Trump\u2019s Ukraine envoy spills the beans on Biden investigation quid pro quo:<\/b> The Donald tried to condition USD 391 mn in US aid to Ukraine on the government launching an investigation into the activities of former VP Joe Biden and his son Hunter, US diplomat William B. The poll confirms economists\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/07\/25\/egypts-economic-growth-to-slow-to-5-5-in-fy2019-2020-reuters-poll\/\">July projections<\/a> for the current fiscal year, but the respondents downgraded their expectations for FY2020-2021 to 5.7% from 5.8%. Reuters notes that Egypt\u2019s non-oil private sector has expanded only six months since beginning the IMF-backed economic reform program in November 2016. CHG will hold 99% of the new company, according to the statement. Speaking to us this week is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amrshawki\/\">Amr Shawki<\/a>, a director at <a href=\"http:\/\/cventureseg.com\/\">CVentures<\/a>, Egypt\u2019s first corporate venture capital firm focused primarily on fintech.<\/p>\n<p><b>My name is Amr Shawki, I\u2019m 35 years\u2019 old, and I\u2019m the son of an engineer and a statistician.<\/b> My wife, Sara El Masry, and I have two children: Rouqaya, who\u2019s 8, and Zeinedin, who\u2019s 11. I\u2019m from Maadi but have plans to move to the Fifth Settlement in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019ve been working at CIB for almost 14 years \u2014 and now that I reflect on it, it\u2019s crazy how quickly time flies.<\/b> Since graduating from college, I\u2019ve been fortunate enough to have an inspiring career across several business lines at CIB. To be part of an environment that fosters learning, innovation, and empowerment is something I value greatly.<\/p>\n<p><b>I recently joined CVentures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CIB, as a director responsible for portfolio management.<\/b> My colleagues and I spend a considerable amount of time speaking to smart and progressive founders with ambitious dreams, from all over the world. We explore and challenge new ideas and business models, exchange thoughts with cross-border investors, CIB stakeholders and other members of our partner network, including but not limited to subject matter experts and innovation executives. Though our primary aim is to invest in companies creating meaningful change in financial services, we are also interested in other tech and tech-enabled value-creating businesses.<\/p>\n<p><b>My line of work requires a lot of critical and strategic thinking \u2014<\/b> being bold and imaginative is a must. Most of what we invest in is a shared vision of the future. Engaging with next-generation entrepreneurs is what consumes our time and energy. We\u2019re looking for the possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/patrick-collison\/#74b346732727\">Collisons<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/pictures\/mdg45ejdik\/vlad-tenev-28\/#25b38b997375\">Tenevs<\/a>of the future (though we\u2019re happy settling for a little less).<\/p>\n<p><b>I wake up as early as 6:30 am<\/b>, have my morning coffee, jump in the shower, get dressed, and we\u2019re all out the door by 7:30 am. I drop Rouqaya and Zein off at school, which is my favorite part of the day. I usually plan to make it to the gym for early morning workouts but have consistently failed to do so for the past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m often the first to arrive in the office, and that\u2019s when I have time to myself.<\/b> I read the news \u2014 Enterprise, BBC, and Bloomberg \u2014 and just when I think I have the office all to myself, my colleagues start charging in.<\/p>\n<p><b>We\u2019re currently a four-person team, running a CIB subsidiary with enough energy to light up Cairo. <\/b>We all share the same passion for startups. Every week, we dedicate time to discussing our pipeline, organizing work schedules, and optimizing our pipeline selection (essentially engaging in deep analysis, evaluation, research and assessment). Additionally, we spend a considerable amount of time negotiating and structuring investment transactions with investment partners and target company founders.<\/p>\n<p><b>My workdays are usually long \u2014 we work late hours. <\/b>I often make a one-hour stop at the gym for weightlifting and cardio after work, and then pick up my kids from their after-school activities or pay my parents a visit, where I\u2019m usually greeted with delicious home-cooked meals. I sometimes play soccer and squash. Generally, I end the day by reading, which provides me with some time to relax and reflect.<\/p>\n<p><b>The last book I read was \u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Poor-Economics-Radical-Rethinking-Poverty\/dp\/1610390938\"><b>Poor Economics<\/b><\/a><b>,\u201d by new Nobel Prize laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo.<\/b> It\u2019s a real eye-opener, discussing the fundamentals of behavioral economics \u2014 one of my favorite topics. It specifically examines the philosophy of poor people\u2019s economic decisions, as well as evaluating how this impacts social security programs usually spearheaded by governments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2019\/10\/07\/todd-phillips-joker-is-no-laughing-matter\"><b>Joker, the recently-released Todd Phillips film<\/b><\/a><b>, is a masterpiece. <\/b>I spent 10 minutes in silence after it ended, taking time to digest its depiction of a troubled individual living under such emotionally challenging conditions. I found the message quite impactful, especially its portrayal of a deeply distressing experience that often goes unnoticed by society.<\/p>\n<p><b>CVentures implements a concentrated investment strategy, primarily focused on companies creating meaningful change in financial services. <\/b>We invest in founders with deep market insights, defensible IP, major partnerships and strongly expansive markets. We provide smart, patient, and strategic capital to transformative businesses with high performance cultures. Additionally, when possible, it\u2019s important that these companies complement CIB\u2019s innovation agenda and demonstrate synergies to other portfolio companies.<\/p>\n<p><b>Unjustifiable investment rounds are creating unnecessary distortions in startup valuations.<\/b> The industry is likely to change for the better once more VCs are deeply engaged with founders, and limited partners demand responsible investing. Additionally, I\u2019d like to see more digital-friendly regulations, ultimately enabling entrepreneurs to innovate with fewer restrictions (which gives room for more imaginative thinking), provided the system is well-governed, of course.
