Under the terms of the agreement, China will increase purchases of certain agricultural goods, and take new measures related to intellectual property, currency, and financial services.<\/p>\n<p><b>Response to the planned agreement has been mixed:<\/b> Some fund managers and economists have described it as \u201cmore cosmetic than real,\u201d offering few substantive benefits and of too limited a scope to remove the uncertainty accompanying the US-China relationship. The planned agreement falls short of resolving many of the thorniest issues between the two nations, and the US has not rolled back any of the existing tariffs imposed on Chinese goods since early 2018, nor has it declared any intention to ease its crackdown on Huawei, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-11\/u-s-china-said-to-reach-partial-deal-could-set-up-trade-truce-k1melw60?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. Equities advanced globally on Friday in anticipation of a trade truce, although US stocks gave up some of their gains after the agreement was announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/Federal-Reserve-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>US Fed to go on bond-buying spree: <\/b>The US Federal Reserve will start on 15 October purchasing USD 60 bn-worth of treasuries bills a month until at least the end of 1Q2020, to pump reserves into the banking system, it said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/monetary20191011a.htm\">in a statement on Friday<\/a>. The move was in response to a recent spike in the overnight funds rate to near the top end of the Fed\u2019s target range, but doesn\u2019t \u201crepresent a change in the stance of [its] monetary policy.\u201d Alongside the open market operation, the Fed will also increase until January overnight lending through repurchase agreements (repos) \u201cto ensure that the supply of reserves remains ample even during periods of sharp increases in non-reserve liabilities.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/baa7e796-ec38-11e9-85f4-d00e5018f061\">FT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed-bonds\/fed-launches-treasury-bill-buys-in-bid-for-ample-reserves-idUSKBN1WQ22D\">Reuters<\/a> have more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Libra dealt another major blow as financial backers head for the exit doors:<\/b> MasterCard, Visa, eBay, Stripe, and Mercado Pago are pulling the plug on their financial backing for Facebook\u2019s digital currency, Libra, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a3e952dc-ec5c-11e9-85f4-d00e5018f061\">according to the FT<\/a>. The companies have flagged concerns about international regulators and government scrutiny over what the cryptocurrency might mean for the global banking and financial systems. PayPal also backed out of Libra last week.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Arab League threatens retaliatory measures as Turkish invasion of Syria continues:<\/b> Arab foreign ministers yesterday called on the UN to halt military support to Turkey and threatened to take \u201cdiplomatic, economic, investment, cultural measures\u201d as Ankara pushed ahead with its invasion of north east Syria, according to a communique seen by the Associated Press. Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called the incursion an \u201cinvasion of an Arab state\u2019s land and an aggression on its sovereignty,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL5N26X0CD\">Reuters reported<\/a>. Eni <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/9858ce3b4b3f4f02abaf758d63242c47\">has said<\/a> that it will not begin drilling if Turkish warships appear in the area. President of the European Council Donald Tusk on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/4b3c40a243a9463fb0376a4551ae3620\">called on Turkey<\/a> to stop its \u201cillegal\u201d drilling operation.<\/p>\n<p><b>The \u2018tanker war\u2019 comes to the Red Sea: <\/b>An Iranian oil tanker came under attack near Saudi Arabia\u2019s Jeddah on Friday, damaging its two main tanks and causing an oil spill in the Red Sea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/iranian-tanker-on-fire-after-explosion-off-saudi-coast-state-media-says-11570776781\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Annual urban inflation decelerated to 4.8% \u2014 the lowest it\u2019s been since November 2012 \u2014 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2019\/10\/894.pdf\">central bank data (pdf)<\/a>. Annual core inflation almost halved to 2.6% in September from 4.9% in August. Monthly core prices fell 2.3% compared to -0.4%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-egypt-economy-inflation\/egypts-annual-urban-consumer-inflation-falls-to-4-8-in-sept-as-reforms-bite-idUSKBN1WP0R3\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-10\/egypt-s-annual-inflation-eases-to-lowest-in-almost-seven-years\">Bloomberg<\/a> also have the story.<\/p>\n<p><b>Headline vs. core:<\/b> Headline inflation accounts for a basket of goods and services in an economy while core inflation removes volatile products such as food and fuel.<\/p>\n<p><b>Food and beverage price inflation plunges:<\/b> The slowdown was driven primarily by food and beverage prices, which grew just 0.3% y-o-y. \u201cThis is a key success factor in controlling inflation and reaching low levels,\u201d Radwa El Swaify, head of research at Pharos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-10\/egypt-s-annual-inflation-eases-to-lowest-in-almost-seven-years\">told Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cThe government focused efforts this year on the supply of food in the market to control any volatility in its price, and that is why inflation has continued to be lower than expectations for several months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Adjusting the base year:<\/b> The CBE and Capmas calculated last month\u2019s inflation figures according to an adjusted base period, with the base year now set at September 2018 instead of January 2010. It also used new weights taken from the Household Income, Expenditure and Consumption Survey (HIECS) 2017\/2018 to better reflect consumption patterns. Weightings for food and beverages, clothing and footwear and communications were all reduced, while the remaining nine categories were increased.<\/p>\n<p><b>The base effect remains a key factor in explaining the lower inflation readings<\/b>, alongside the strength of the EGP and \u201cmore cautious spending behavior,\u201d Beltone Financial said in a research note. Food and beverages, which is usually a prime source of inflationary pressure, showed negative growth for the first time at -0.6%, compared to 6.1% in August.<\/p>\n<p><b>The surprisingly low inflation reading <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL3N26V3BU\"><b>pushed up the stock market<\/b><\/a>, with the benchmark EGX30 index rallying to close at 0.8% on Thursday, driven by index heavyweight CIB rising 0.3% and Cairo for Investment and Real Estate Development (CIRA) rising 3.9%.<\/p>\n<p><b>Successive months of plummeting inflation all but ensures more monetary easing ahead.<\/b> The fast-paced deceleration makes it likely that the CBE will move to cut rates again when it next meets on 14 November, albeit at a slower pace of 50 bps, Eskaros said. Beltone also predicts \u201cbenign\u201d inflation readings until the end of the year, giving the CBE room to push on with its aggressive easing cycle. The investment firm anticipates a 50-100 bps cut during the November meeting. EFG Hermes\u2019 Mohamed Abu Basha, meanwhile, suggests that inflation could pick back up again towards 8-9%. Despite this, he expects a 100 bps cut next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-10\/egypt-s-annual-inflation-eases-to-lowest-in-almost-seven-years\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/10\/2617.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Real interest rates among the best in the world:<\/b> The latest figures mean that Egypt\u2019s inflation-adjusted interest rates have now risen to 8.5% \u2014 despite the CBE cutting interest rates by 250 bps over the past two months. Real interest rates have now overtaken Turkey and Ukraine to become among the highest in the world, Bloomberg says. The EGP saw its biggest rally since the middle of September after the inflation figures were released, making it the world\u2019s second best performing currency against the USD after Ukraine\u2019s hryvnia. The platform allows charitable organizations to purchase food that would otherwise go to waste from food providers, including supermarkets, restaurants and hotels, at reduced prices. These organizations then distribute the food to those in need free of charge.
