The central bank has now hiked rates by 1.1k bps since March 2022. The MPC left rates unchanged during its previous two monetary policy meetings in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/45817abc-65e2-4227-9713-a90f5d5cd66a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">May<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/fa77becf-ada3-4cb1-9583-6f2744f3266e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Forecasters didn\u2019t see this coming:<\/strong> All of the seven analysts and economists whom we surveyed in our <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/37c881ba-2884-4f33-a85b-701aa5599565\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">interest rate poll<\/a> ahead of last week\u2019s meeting expected the MPC to hold rates steady. A number of analysts had predicted that the central bank would refrain from interest-rate adjustments until the banking system had built up its FX reserves ahead of an expected currency devaluation later in the year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The committee is expecting inflation rates to peak in 2H 2023<\/strong> before beginning to decline as a result outfits tighter monetary policy. Capmas and the CBE are expected to publish inflation figures for July on <strong>10 August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What will the impact be? <\/strong>Some of the analysts we spoke to ahead of the decision said foreign exchange rates and liquidity currently has a bigger impact on inflation than interest rates. Others had warned that higher rates would have a negative impact on government borrowing costs, while not doing much to attract portfolio inflows. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>USD bonds rally on back of hikes: <\/strong>The MPC\u2019s resumption of the monetary-tightening cycle spurred optimism that policymakers\u2019 commitment to tackling inflation would positively impact our USD 3 bn loan program with the IMF, leading Egypt\u2019s USD bonds to rise the most in emerging markets, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-08-04\/egypt-s-bonds-rally-most-in-emerging-markets-after-rate-hike#xj4y7vzkg\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports.
