Seven of 10 economists <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/22\/enterprise-poll-central-bank-of-egypt-to-keep-rates-on-hold-in-final-meeting-of-2019-8827\/\">we surveyed<\/a> expect the committee to hold off on delivering the fifth rate cut of the year on the back of a slight uptick in inflation in November and uncertainty over December\u2019s figures. Most respondents say the CBE will adopt a wait-and-see approach as it gauges the impact of the previous cuts. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/poll-egypts-central-bank-seen-holding-rates-after-inflation-uptick-2019-12-24\">A Reuters poll of economists<\/a><\/strong><strong> had similar results<\/strong>, with nine out of 14 expecting the central bank to keep rates on hold.<\/p><p><strong>The minority expecting a rate cut on Thursday see it in the 50-100 bps range. <\/strong>Among the reasons they cite are an already \u201cexceptionally low inflation rate\u201d and high real interest rates to continue attracting carry traders.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>Expect low trading volumes on the EGX to continue until after the holidays<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsaanews.com\/2019\/12\/24\/1278977\">Naeem Brokerage\u2019s Tarek Abazza says<\/a>. The EGX30\u2019s turnover yesterday was EGP 382 mn, or around 40% below the trailing 90-day average. Analysts told Reuters\u2019 Arabic service <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/16\/egx-struggles-on-low-trading-volumes-lack-of-new-listings-8495\/\">earlier this month<\/a> that volumes have fallen a little over 40% since 2017, attributing the fall to low trading volumes and a lack of new listings weighing heavily on the Egyptian exchange\u2019s ability to attract investors.<\/p><p><strong>PSA- The national weather service is still warning of cool, windy weather<\/strong> from now through Friday morning. He made it clear that, as of Sunday\u2019s cabinet shuffle, there is no Investment Ministry, and that GAFI will operate under the jurisdiction of the cabinet, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2PQBUc6\">according to Al Mal<\/a>. The cabinet shuffle that<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/23\/meet-your-new-cabinet-8910\/\">took place on Sunday<\/a> saw Sahar Nasr exiting as an investment minister, with Madbouly taking over the portfolio. He said then the decision was to help untangle the bureaucracy of investment and streamline policy.<\/p><p><strong>Egyptian-Greek-Cypriot alliance leans on France to scare off Turkey: <\/strong>Our fair capital will play host to a summit between Cairo, Athens, Nicosia, and Paris on 4 or 5 January, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias <a href=\"https:\/\/in-cyprus.com\/greek-fm-announces-quadripartite-summit-between-cyprus-egypt-greece-and-france-in-january\/\">announced yesterday in an interview<\/a>. While no details are yet out about the purpose or agenda of this meeting, you have to figure it has something to do with Turkey\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/24\/what-were-tracking-on-tuesday-24-december-2019-8987\/\">signing and ratification<\/a> of a military accord with Libya\u2019s Government of National Accord, which is led by Tripoli-based Prime Minister Fayez Al Serraj. France and Egypt are leading supporters of Gen. Khalifa Haftar, Al Serraj\u2019s rival in the east.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, <strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had a discussion about issues of \u201ccommon interest\u201d with Greek Prime Minister<\/strong> Kyriakos Mitsotakis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/photos\/a.155486328304089\/771960533323329\/?type=3&amp;theater\">according to an Ittihadiya statement<\/a>. The two also talked trilateral cooperation with Cyprus.<\/p><p><strong>Greece and Cyprus also have a bone to pick with Turkey over the East Mediterrannean gas fields<\/strong>, as Turkey opposes the regional cooperation of East Mediterrannean countries without the inclusion of Turkish Cyprus.<\/p><p><strong>We have other friends, too:<\/strong> Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry discussed the Libya issue with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in a phone call yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/1456281581216869\">according to a Cabinet statement<\/a>. The practice, which is not new to the automotive industry, is when dealers book cars as sold while in reality they are being used as test or loan vehicles, or are still parked in the dealer\u2019s lot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boeing Co. ousts CEO after crashes of 737 Max jetliner:<\/strong> Dennis Muilenburg was removed as CEO and president of Boeing and will be replaced by the company\u2019s chairman and General Electric Co. veteran David Calhoun on 13 January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-23\/boeing-s-muilenburg-is-out-as-ceo-david-calhoun-takes-his-place?srnd=premium-middle-east\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. The move comes after two deadly crashes of the company\u2019s most important airliner and a botched test of a vehicle for NASA.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>In other news, the US has scrapped a short-lived trade agreement with the fictional<\/strong><strong> nation of Wakanda:<\/strong> Due to a clerical error, Marvel Universe\u2019s fictional African country of Wakanda was briefly added to the US Department of Agriculture\u2019s (USDA) online list of nations that have trade agreements with the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/oddlyEnoughNews\/idAFKBN1YN0FN\">according to Reuters<\/a>. Wakanda was listed as trading live animals, dairy goods, and tobacco, among other products, with the US before it was removed from the USDA\u2019s registry.<\/p><p class=\"web-image\"><a of venture capital (VC) transactions that went to early-stage African startups in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/ventureburn.com\/2019\/12\/deals-african-startups-2019\/\">according to Venture Burn<\/a>. <strong>Egypt accounted for 27% of disclosed transactions by volume and 25% by value.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The breakdown: <\/strong>Out of a total of 88 disclosed VC transactions with a total value of USD 290 mn raised by African startups this year, Egyptian startups closed 24 transactions worth USD 73.3 mn. Last year, Egypt was the fastest-growing startup market in MENA as well as the second-largest, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/01\/10\/egypt-fastest-growing-startup-market-in-mena-which-raised-usd-893-mn-in-2018\/\">according to start-up platform Magnitt\u2019s<\/a> 2018 MENA Venture Investment Report. Egypt\u2019s share of the total number of seed funding agreements grew 7% y-o-y to USD 196.5 mn, representing 22% of all MENA closes in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Swvl tops funding transactions in Africa:<\/strong> Egyptian ride-hailing app Swvl\u2019s USD 42 mn series B-2 funding round was the top VC transaction in African startups for the year, accounting for more than 57% of the total funding amount in Egyptian startups. The round <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/23\/swvl-raises-usd-42-mn-largest-ever-funding-round-for-an-egyptian-startup\/\">was co-led by<\/a> Swedish VC Vostok Ventures and Dubai-based BECO Capital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt\u2019s Adzily came sixth in the list:<\/strong> Cairo-based indoor advertising platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzily.com\/\">Adzily<\/a> enjoyed the sixth top VC transaction in Africa for the year with its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/11\/28\/egyptian-indoor-advertising-platform-adzily-raises-usd-12-2-mn-from-saudi-company-7247\/\">USD 12.2 mn funding round<\/a> from Saudi-based Al Tharawat Private Investment Holding Company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The transport and mobility sector received the largest share of funding in Africa this year<\/strong>, followed by fintech and the distribution sector. Out of eight transport startups that closed transactions in Africa this year, three were Egyptian.
