had introduced 12-month, <strong>25% certificates<\/strong> of deposit;<\/li>\n<li>Italy said it wants to build a USD 2.8 bn link that would allow it to <strong>import electricity from Egypt<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Our friends at Compass Capital became the latest to declare themselves interested in acquiring a <strong>majority stake in Pachin<\/strong>, the EGX-listed paint-maker.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>THE BIG STORY HERE AT HOME- Are we starting to find our way out of the tunnel? <\/strong>There are signs the 25% certificates are attracting record demand and the central bank says it is letting supply-and-demand forces set the value of the EGP.<\/p><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>The next two big checkpoints: The presser, held by IMF Mission Chief for Egypt Ivanna Vladkova Hollar, will coincide with the release of the IMF\u2019s staff report on Egypt and other documents related to the extended fund facility.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The Senate is back in session today with a busy agenda: <\/strong>The upper house of parliament will kick off a two-day debate today on how to integrate the informal economy. The catalyst is a a study prepared by senator and business leader Ahmed Abu Hashima. Also:<\/p><ul>\n<li>The Senate\u2019s Financial and Economic Affairs Committee is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/51216a98-bfaf-43ec-8970-578281024027\">hold a series of hearings<\/a>on a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/eadfc091-174c-41db-bf19-a1e4cf62e7b7\">report<\/a> drafted by the pro-government Mostaqbal Watan party that aims to overhaul how we approach <strong>foreign direct investment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Financial and Economic Affairs Committee will also discuss proposals to enforce <strong>price controls on key commodities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Senate Housing Committee will resume <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9a7335eb-c2fc-47c1-bf69-e87d32942cbf\">discussions on<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9a7335eb-c2fc-47c1-bf69-e87d32942cbf\">amendments<\/a><\/strong><strong> to the 2008 Unified Building Law<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul><p><strong>PSA #1- Look for a daytime high of just 18\u00b0C and largely cloudy skies today <\/strong>in the capital city, our favorite weather app warns. Deputy Chairman Yehia Aboul Fotouh said in a phone-in over the weekend with Kelma Akhira\u2019s Lamees El Hadidi (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BQZ5WDT4hp8\">watch, runtime: 11:55<\/a>). Savers invested some EGP 66 bn in CDs at the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) and EGP 31 bn at Banque Misr, he added. Traders need to submit their bids directly to GASC by midday tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thanks, World Bank: <\/strong>The purchase will be funded with a portion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/641511ec-c42a-4cf5-a975-49161d01b1f4\">USD 500 mn loan<\/a> the World Bank agreed to extend the country last summer. The loan is geared towards boosting our food security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wheat tenders have been few and far between lately: <\/strong>The state buyer has largely shifted from international tenders to direct purchases of wheat since the outbreak of war in Ukraine sent the grain markets into turmoil last year. High prices and a lack of offers saw GASC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/362a4e91-c9c4-4e11-8128-f68c89173c18\">cancel some<\/a> of the few international tenders that were scheduled. The authority has in recent months made several large <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ecfdefea-bfa4-45b9-ad11-7d8d298aa805\">direct purchases<\/a> of Russian wheat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Suppliers to GASC are now obliged to register to the newly-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/eadfc091-174c-41db-bf19-a1e4cf62e7b7\">Egyptian Mercantile Exchange (EMX)<\/a>, the statement reads. Wind and solar farms being developed by offshore investors in the northeastern state of Queensland, for example, are already among the largest of their kind in Australia. Other projects funded with foreign capital aim to boost the nation\u2019s burgeoning green hydrogen industry, facilitate sustainable building construction, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austrade.gov.au\/international\/invest\/investor-updates\/2021\/foreign-investment-helping-australia-transition-to-a-green-future\">enable the export of clean energy<\/a> to offshore markets, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s newly legislated target of reducing carbon emissions by 43% by 2030 may well transform the steady stream of offshore capital into a flood, as a greater number of foreign investors seek to diversify their energy interests and, equally, to capitalize on ever-expanding business opportunities arising as a direct result of the nation\u2019s climate policies.<\/p>\n<p>MENAT\u2019s existing trade connections with Australia should provide a springboard for other investors eager to explore new ventures. Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are already-established markets for a range of Australian exports, accounting for AUD 11.1 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/trade-and-investment\/australia-gulf-cooperation-council-gcc-fta\">in bilateral goods trade last year<\/a>. Services are also an increasingly important part of the economic relationship and two-way investment between UAE and Australia, for example, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/uae-market-insights-2021.pdf\">totalled AUD 14.5 bn in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is also among MENAT entities that have held Australian interests, including as part of a consortium which owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adia.ae\/en\/investments\/infrastructure\/portfolio\/case-studies\/westconnex\">Sydney\u2019s WestConnex Motorway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers behind the Australian federal government\u2019s headline climate commitments provide a compelling picture of the green opportunities at hand. Prior to its election, for example, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reputex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/REPUTEX_The-economic-impact-of-the-ALPs-Powering-Australia-Plan_Summary-Report-1221-2.pdf\">promised to increase the share of renewables<\/a> in Australia\u2019s national electricity market to 82% by 2030 versus 68% if it maintained the previous settings that underpinned the nation\u2019s energy transition plans.<\/p>\n<p>It also calculated that its overall climate commitments would generate AUD 76 bn in investment by 2030 \u2014 an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reputex.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/REPUTEX_The-economic-impact-of-the-ALPs-Powering-Australia-Plan_Summary-Report-1221-2.pdf\">amount that is equivalent to<\/a> a hefty 3% of the anticipated national GDP in that year.<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, less than one third of that AUD 76 bn was expected to come from public investment.<\/p>\n<p>For a less populous nation like Australia, a significant proportion of that private investment will inevitably be sourced from foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n<p>Major companies from Germany, Spain, and France have publically signaled their intentions to explore a broader range of Australian projects, and Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/geo\/singapore\/singapore-australia-green-economy-agreement\">recently signed<\/a> a Green Economy Agreement with Singapore to facilitate trade and investment in environmental goods and services, and to generally support each other\u2019s climate transition.<\/p>\n<p>There is still much for Australia to do if it is to realize the climate change mitigation vision of the federal government elected by its population earlier this year.
