weekend, but this one still can\u2019t come soon enough.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORIES OF THE DAY here at home <\/strong>include news that Qatar\u2019s Al Kuwari Group could be looking to snap up the Ramses Hilton hotel in Cairo for a reported USD 320 mn. Meanwhile, the EGX is drumming up interest in IPOs of state-owned companies it hopes could come this year.<\/p><p><strong>AND- Supply Minister Aly El Moselhy spent seven hours in the hot seat yesterday<\/strong>, telling MPs we\u2019re not going back to the days of Nasser as they criticized his ministry for not doing enough to tamp down rising consumer prices.<\/p><p>^^ We have more on all three stories below.<\/p><p><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD is the political drama still unfolding in the US House of <\/strong><strong>Representatives yesterday<\/strong>, as Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed in three rounds of votes to be elected as speaker of the GOP-controlled chamber. Divisions in the Republican party, which won a slim majority in the lower chamber in November\u2019s midterm elections, saw McCarthy become the first majority party leader in a century to lose a first ballot for the post.<\/p><p><strong>What\u2019s next? The House will have to keep on voting<\/strong> until it can elect a speaker \u2014 whether McCarthy or another candidate \u2014 in the latest display of dysfunction on Capitol Hill in a polarized political climate. His trial has been set for October, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sam-bankman-fried-pleads-not-guilty-to-fraud-and-other-offenses-11672774004?mod=hp_lead_pos5\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports.<\/p><p><strong>WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s PMI day: <\/strong>We\u2019ll find out how Egypt\u2019s private sector performed in December this morning when S&amp;P Global publishes the first purchasing managers\u2019 index of 2023. We\u2019re expecting business activity in the private sector to have contracted for the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7ea9cc57-7ea8-406e-baa5-ec52c6e0d631\">25th consecutive month<\/a> amid surging inflation caused in part by the weakening of the EGP. <strong>The release is due to land at 6.15 am CLT<\/strong>, shortly after we hit \u2018send\u2019 on this morning\u2019s issue \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.spglobal.com\/Public\/Release\/PressReleases?language=en\">you\u2019ll find it here<\/a>. The index for the UAE is due out at the same time.<\/p><p><strong>Saudi\u2019s economy continues to grow: <\/strong>Saudi employment numbers jumped to near five-year highs in December on the back of a \u201csharp expansion\u201d in non-oil business activity, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/1\/Saudi-PMI-December-2021-English.pdf\">PMI (pdf)<\/a>. The index came in at 56.9, well above the 50.0 mark that separates expansion from contraction, but below the 58.5 recorded in November.<\/p><p><strong>The EGX will be<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-27-at-3.27.08-PM.png\">trialing an update (pdf)<\/a><\/strong><strong> to its trading platform today and tomorrow<\/strong> from 3pm to 4:30pm. The update includes changes to the way stocks\u2019 daily closing price is calculated and approved.<\/p><hr class=\"grey-line\"><p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>DATA POINT- Egypt\u2019s foreign reserves rose by more than USD 500 mn to register <\/strong><strong>just over USD 34 bn at the end of December 2022<\/strong>, up from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/98cfd011-4b2c-4d0b-b840-214f1378d7ab\">USD 33.5 bn<\/a> in November, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/ar\/Pages\/HighlightsPages\/NIR-December-2022.aspx\">central bank data<\/a> released yesterday. Reserves have been on the rise for four consecutive months and have now risen by more than USD 850 mn since the end of August, a reversal after falling 20% earlier in the year on the back of the war in Ukraine and tightening financial conditions globally.<\/p><p><strong>Foreign<\/strong><strong> residents won\u2019t have to cough up FX to board a train:<\/strong> Foreigners residing in the country will not be charged in USD to book train tickets in the country, a source at the Transport Ministry told Enterprise yesterday. The decision to charge foreigners for train tickets in USD, announced last week, will only apply to tourists, the person said.<\/p><p><strong>Here\u2019s how much they\u2019ll be charged: <\/strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Qev3Hg\">price list<\/a> published this week by the Egyptian National Railways Authority shows that tourists will be charged between USD 15 and USD 65 depending on the route and travel class. EGX head Ramy El Dokany held a presser yesterday to mark the release of the 2022 report, which is not yet available on the bourse website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The companies ready to be listed reportedly <\/strong>include <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d041e1e1-1f9c-4271-8391-d6c3b10e965f\">Banque du Caire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/01c4eb21-6559-49bf-86ce-bb682d493449\">Misr Life Ins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptian-drilling.com\/\">Egyptian Drilling<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptian-drilling.com\/\">Company<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elab-eg.com\/\">Egyptian Linear Alkylbenzene Company<\/a> (ELAB), according to the report, which doesn\u2019t disclose an expected timeline for the offerings. Egyptian Drilling Co. and ELAB have been in the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/03\/19\/govt-unveils-the-lineup-for-the-state-ipo-program\/\">lineup for the state IPO program<\/a> since 2018, while Banque du Caire is a perennial IPO prospect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eight other state-owned companies will also offer shares on the EGX as part of <\/strong><strong>the privatization program<\/strong>, the report reads. Aren\u2019t they already private-sector companies? <\/strong>Alexbank is 80% owned by Italy\u2019s Intesa Sanpaolo Bank, but the state holds a 20% share and appoints two board members. eMethanex, which the media report refers to as simply \u201cMethanex\u201d is a joint venture between Canadian methanol giant Methanex Corp, which holds a 50% stake and Egyptian state institutions that hold 33%. Saudi-based APICORP owns the remaining 17%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REFRESHER- Gov\u2019t is hoping this will be the year its privatization strategy springs into <\/strong><strong>action. <\/strong>The state is looking to reduce its involvement in certain sectors of the economy as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d041e1e1-1f9c-4271-8391-d6c3b10e965f\">newly finalized state ownership policy<\/a>, which aims to more than double the private sector\u2019s role in the economy to 65% and attract USD 40 bn in private investment by 2026. Public share offerings and stake sales to strategic investors will be a key part of seeing that policy through. The government had envisaged selling shares in as many as 10 state-owned companies on the bourse in 2022, either via IPOs or secondary stake sales \u2014 but market turmoil amid the fallout from Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3894b30f-35e6-43f5-9ddf-bd3ee9243712\">saw those plans pushed back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other companies could take the plunge: <\/strong>The bourse is in talks with firms in the tourism, tech, and renewable energy sectors over potential listings in 2023, El Dokany reportedly said at the presser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the last few months are any indication, conditions on the EGX look promising: <\/strong>El Dokany used the presser to highlight the bourse\u2019s stellar turnaround in the final months of 2022. The EGX <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bc48ea1e-20e9-4394-9c08-70c896b45556\">outperformed all of its Middle-East peers in 2022<\/a> thanks to a bull run in 4Q sparked by <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/afternoons\/pm-taweem-3-0-sees-egp-at-23-03-against-the-greenback\/\">October\u2019s currency devaluation<\/a> and the loan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c374319e-e849-44f6-bf5a-8179fb41caf5\">agreement with the IMF<\/a>. The EGX30 ended 2022 up 22%, a major reversal in fortunes for Egypt\u2019s benchmark index, which by the middle of the year had been deep in bear territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the key stats in the EGX 2022 report highlighted by Dokany: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turnover on the EGX rose 7.6% y-o-y in 2022 to EGP 1.08 tn;<\/li>\n<li>Some 175k new investors began trading on the EGX, triple the number of new investors in 2021. Some 43k new investors began trading in October and November alone. The total number of investors now stands at 526k;<\/li>\n<li>Retail investors accounted for some 53% of overall trading, down from 68% in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3jLvOv5\">Youm7<\/a> cites the report as saying;<\/li>\n<li>Cash-dividend distributions to shareholders by listed companies more than doubled y-o-y in 2022 to reaach EGP 36.3 bn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>EGX ROADSHOW UPDATE- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bourse officials met with 16 separate investors and investment funds and four <\/strong><strong>\u201cinternational institutions\u201d as part of its foreign roadshow in recent months<\/strong>, the report is cited as saying. Chief among the obstacles to entering the EGX raised by the investors they spoke to were fluctuations in EGP exchange rates and a lack of fresh offerings. Some MPs branded the Supply Ministry \u201ca black-market ministry\u201d and \u201cthe ministry of greedy retailers,\u201d as covered by Ala Mas\u2019ouleety (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Bdg7r9dOWtM\">watch, runtime: 13:34<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>El Moselhy <\/strong><strong>stood his ground: \u201cWe will never go back to the socialist policies of the 1960s,\u201d <\/strong>the minister said in response to calls by MPs for the ministry to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/647f504d-44e8-442e-b618-4eb868901dfe\">enforce price controls<\/a> on all basic commodities and goods. \u201cWe are a free economy,\u201d El Moselhy said, adding that the government is focusing on making sure goods are readily available. He blamed rising prices on global volatility thanks to the effects of war in Ukraine, predicting that imported inflation will linger for the next 2-3 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a shortage of ministry inspectors to oversee retail outlets across the country<\/strong>, Rep. Jihan Bioumy complained about discrepancies in prices of subsidized goods between different retailers and the soaring prices of strategic commodities, while Reps.
